Satellite PT started out as an experiment. Wanting to explore the geometry of using angles instead of curves, I started sketching out the face using grid paper. I had seen similar fonts that tended to be completely symmetrical. My exploration tended to include what I humorously call 'faux humanist' elements, such as asymmetrical bowls, tapers and 'flare-serifs' (for lack of a better word) for select terminals. The result was a quirky and interesting face at display sizes. However, at small sizes, as ink bleed starts to take over, the angles disappear in favor of the overall forms (rounded bowls, etc.) and the 'faux-humanist' effects start to mimic modulation found in more traditional, modulated text faces. While it is hardly a true text face, the result is surprising legibility at text sizes.

According to Hellmut G. Bomm "Nautilus was based on a handwritten type used for the text Li. Das Helle, Klare from the I Ging. "The intention was to create a clear, highly legible typeface. While the even strokes of sans serif types eventually tire the eyes in long texts, the marked stroke contrast of Nautilus lends the type its legibility. The characters were drawn with a broad tipped pen, and like an antiqua type, the forms of Nautilus display a variety of elements. The narrow figures with relatively large spaces between them create an overall open appearance and allow a large quantity of text to fit into a small space. "The headstrong forms of Nautilus make this an excellent display type. The italic weights are independent typefaces with hints of a handwritten character."

Font designed after that used in Brehan-Loudeac (Britanny, France) by Robin Fouquet and Jean Crès in years 1480s to print a lot of texts and books. This font include “long s”, naturally, as typically medieval, and a few special characters and abreviations, also some variants, like for “d”, “r” or “v”. The small “y” is accented, just like in British alphabet of the time, though the texts were printed in French. Added, a lot of accented characters no longer existing on this time. A render sheet, in the font file, makes it more easy to identify on a keyboard. This font is used as variously as web-site titles, posters and flier designs, editing ancient texts... all you need. This font supports easily as large than small size, remaining readable, original and pretty.

Iturritxu (a small spring or fountain in the Basque language) is the basic style, one letterform per character, using highly readable glyphs suited to text applications. It includes Latin characters for Western European, Central European and Baltic Languages, plus Romanian and Turkish. Iturritxu 2020 is the feature-rich style for OpenType friendly applications. Designed to work especially well with the concave consonants and nesting vowels (KO, RO, TXO, ZO etc.) common in Basque (Euskara), the font also has many ligatures and contextual features for other languages such as English and Welsh. Much of the inspiration for the contextual forms comes from the compound consonants and vowel signs of North Indian scripts. Several roads have been closed around my village, so I need to drive alongside narrow country roads ro get my groceries done. The roads are so narrow that two cars cannot pass, so you need to use the (muddy) kerbs. A lot of cars these days have Xenon lights and they shine really bright and blue. I am non xenon-phobic, but I can tell you that the ‘old’ yellowish headlight were softer on the eyes, especially when you’re trying to navigate narrow country roads! Yes, I know, a long story leading nowhere, but a little personal story (in my opinion) is better than a boring text full of technical bla bla. A font is a font after all and I don’t need to explain what it looks like, because you can see that for yourself! Headlight Blue is a handmade, all caps display font. This is not an historically accurate font but rather one intended capture the spirit of ancient Roman manual type. It was inspired by various patterns used in documents and books created by Latin scribes between the second and fourth centuries. They used either calamus and ink on papyrus, or a pointed metal stick on wax tablets. We have created the font for contemporary use; distinguishing between U and V, I and J, which had no meaning for ancient Latin scribes, and adding thorn, Oslash, Lslash, W, Y and common accented characters that did not exist at the time. Regina-Cursiv is a warm, bold, casual typeface. Its friendly, rounded curves remind me of the line from a gospel song by the Canton Spirituals, about "smoothin' up the roughway." Jointly released by the Bauer and Berthold foundries of Germany during the fin-de-siecle period, this typeface has some cultural flexibility. There are alternate versions of the uppercase ‘H’ and ‘I’ that can be chosen to reflect a humanist or blackletter tradition, whichever you prefer. Other alternates offer various stylistic choices. It seems that after the 1960s, very few display typefaces were being produced that had the desirability to transcend generations, as did many type designs of the past. In 1970, a local television station embraced a lettering style for its logo that was a cross between round point pen nib lettering and the modular, techno look complete with squared characters in a futuristic "space age" style. News Crew JNL was inspired by the few examples found of this particular font [in use by the station at the time] and was pretty much created from scratch in order to capture the 1970s era of experimental typography. It is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The inspiration source for Brass Rules Grand is a collection of the brass rules from the 1889 “Convenient Book of Specimens” from Franklin Type Foundry in Cincinnati. This is a collection of basic utilitarian brass rules that has been created as combinable and endlessly expanding. A calligraphic roman sans-serif, with large x-height, the Vershen font is available in four weights, plus a series with small capitals and old-style figures, also in four weights, and finally, a four-weight set of universal fraction generators. The three fonts in the Prescott series are re-creations of 19th century favorites with an Old West flavor. The town of Prescott was the capital of Arizona Territory from 1864 until 1912, when Arizona was admitted to the Union, and the capital moved to Phoenix. In 1986 Page Studio Graphics started its digital foundry in Arizona. The fonts are thoroughly pair-kerned, including all accented characters. Auto-kerning should be turned on in your application program. The font packages include both TrueType and PostScript versions, and are available in either PC/Win or Macintosh format. Mr Dodo is a hand drawn typeface family with eight styles. Four weights with a rounded version for each one. It has uppercase and lowercase characters with up to three alternate glyphs. Each style was drawn separately. We did not interpolate any glyphs to keep an irregular, organic feeling. This way you can combine different styles without worrying that same characters will look like a awkward copy when standing close to each other. It has build in OpenType Contextual Alternates feature that will automatically set alternate glyphs depending on frequency of appearance of the same character (even in web font but only in HTML5 browsers). The script doesn’t just throw random glyphs.

Linotype Sicula, from German designer Roberto Manella, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. It is available in two weights, regular and oblique. Linotype Sicula will quickly win over any nostalgic spirits. Ornamental and sweeping, the figures line up on the paper, their contrasting strokes and playfully irregular forms giving them an exuberant, decorative character. The careful details of each figure come to light best when used in larger point sizes. Linotype Sicula is therefore best for headlines and can easily inspire typographic experiments and its capitals can serve as initials combined with other typefaces, especially sans serif.

Argyle Rough was originally developed for a packaging campaign in the late 80s in my studio and sat around in various stages of completion until I decided to autotrace my original drawings. I liked the quirky roughness and decided that it did not detract from the charm of the original, in fact it improved it and saved me a whole lot of work. The original campaign called for a few additional alternate characters for use at either end and double in the middle of words, ee, ff, ll, ss etc and a stylized Th, always useful. First of all, let me get one thing straight: With Janky Action, I didn’t make any attempt on making a beautiful or good looking font! Janky Action is my humble attempt to recreate a sign I saw at a flea market. The sign was obviously made by someone who didn’t give a darn about the width of strokes, height of letters, and other “rules” when making a sign. I fell in love with the naive approach on how to make a sign. In order to create some randomness, I have added 4 different versions of each lowercase letter. I hope you find this font as enjoyable as I did while making it! :)

One of the best desserts I have eaten in my life was a treacle tart. I do know that it was in England and I do know that it was delicious. I really don’t know why I was thinking of that, but that pleasant memory did give me a name for this font. I am still learning my new font software, which is a bit of a slow process. The software I used for this font allows me to add several languages, which, hitherto, I couldn’t access.
