First place in a spelling-bee competition, a Harvard University diploma or the Nobel Peace Prize? He named Gertrud after his better half, but was also inspired by old handwritten documents: "Gertrud is a calligraphic letter design from the 16th century. I used it when I engrossed diplomas with a flat-nibbed pen in the 1980's. When I got my Mac I generated the typeface in Fontographer." Waters Titling is the work of lettering artist Julian Waters, a multiple master typeface of classical calligraphic roman capitals. This broad-tipped pen design is related to other historically-based titling alphabets but offers a wider range of weights and widths, making it extremely versatile for movie titles, book jackets, posters, banners, calendars, etc. Waters Titling is based on the timeless Roman monumental inscription forms of almost 2000 years ago, but also has a touch of contemporary vigor and flair. The design displays a strong calligraphic thick/thin stroke weight contrast and flowing, subtly bracketed serifs. A “latin” alphabet modelled on the ethiopian Ge'ez script - an experiment that works. Amhara was created by transferring the typical forms of the Ethiopian Amharic script to the west European alphabet. Because Amharic is traditionally written with an expanded pen tip, it shows the typical ductus also characteristic of the uncial scripts of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. So this font »Amhara« has a somewhat sacramental effect. And, although the individual forms look foreign, the overall picture is strangely familiar. Genia is a script typeface that carries roundhand calligraphy DNA. Instead of using pointed nib pen, Genia was created using a fine brush resulting in clean and wavy character. With the OpenType features, Genia creates the natural feel of calligraphy writing. This contextual feature makes the font 'smart'. It knows which letters are the initial and which one is the finial. The feature can be activated in the OpenType section under the names of CALT or Contextual Alternates. Genia also gives you old style and proportional number options. As long as there’s been movie theaters, those establishments became the perfect hideaway for couples who wanted to kiss, hug and snuggle without the watchful eyes of disapproving parents or the pesky attention of younger siblings. Such was evident in the [13 word] title of the 1919 composition “Take Your Girlie to the Movies (If You Can’t Make Love at Home)”. On the sheet music for this song, it is hand lettered in the Art Nouveau fashion of the time by a round nib pen, and made a perfect candidate to be redrawn as a digital typeface. The end result is Nouveau Theme JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This font was inspired by the “Cancellaresca moderna ” type, which was calligraphed by Francesco Periccioli (published in 1610 in Siena, Italy). It was entirely handwritten by the designer for each circumstance, using quill pen and medieval ink on a rough paper, with added characters as accented ones and a lot of ligatures with respect for the original design. This font includes “long s” and also a lot of ligatures as “ff”, “ffi” “fij” “pp”... Bakeshop is a casual script font family. It is drawn with rounded marker so the contrast is quite low. It has bumps at the end of strokes where the pen has stopped and the ink has spread. Bakeshop includes three weights and has both connecting and non-connecting versions. Connecting Bakeshop versions has OpenType features like Final Forms, looping connections with lowercase e, high connecting stroke with ascenders and plenty of discretionary ligatures. You can enable Final Forms either enabling Final Form feature or Contextual Alternates. If you want to use the high connection strokes with ascenders enable Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic Set 2. Before the original sketches, I had imagined and dreamed this font was used for side characters of retro robot animations such as Gundam and Ideon. But the sketches were put in a PENDING folder. It was a few years ago. In the begining of 2011, I restarted working with the sketches to complete as a font file. Detail and some shape were improved retaining the original concept and they were completed, then named ‘Space Colony’. Just as the name implies, this wide and geometric font family consisting of six weights was designed targeting at use for futuristic product of game, movie, logo and so on. I happened to mention to the proprietor of an antique barn near here that I'd be interested in any old typewriters she happened to come across. A conversation ensued, the proprietor withdrew into a back room, and she re-emerged with an old handwritten letter, dated 18 Sept. 1825 and spanning nearly three pages. The letter, penned by Samuel Clarke, a Princeton, Mass., pastor, sought donations for the victims of an accident at sea. I thought his script unique, stylistic, and definitely something worth digitizing, so I bought the old letter and took it home. Had to come up with several uppercase characters to round out the set, but the results seem good and proper. Full release has complete character set.

The other day, I was thinking how time flies and how my kids grow up so fast. In the blink of an eye, they had turned from babies into almost-teenagers. They're not teenagers yet, but given their tantrums, it does feel like I have three teenagers in the house... ;-) Ogenblik, in Dutch, means: ‘in the blink of an eye’, ‘lightning fast’, or ‘for a brief moment’. It’s similar to the German ‘Augenblick’, which means exactly the same. Ogenblik was made with the same dried out marker pen that helped me create my font Castlerigg. I guess it had more than one extra font in it! Ogenblik is a bit of a grungy, yet quite legible and neat font. Comes with multilingual support.

“Feverish” was a font borne out of perceived need in the marketplace. Hallmark retired font designer and master letter designer Myron McVay first approached Bill LaFever to collaborate on a project to design a semiformal calligraphic script that could be set as text copy with a large variety of swash and alternative characters and small caps. Bill penned the initial forms and Myron did the digital conversions and initial technical work. After Myron passed away, Terry Lee, a protégé of Myron’s at Hallmark, also retired, took over and the project was completed. “Feverish” is a semi-formal italic which can be used in a wide variety of commercial and advertising applications. The font family is large which can accommodate a variety of unique applications.

New Old English was prompted by two Victorian coins, the mid nineteenth century gothic crown and gothic florin, which featured a gothic script lowercase with quite modern looking, short ascenders and descenders enabling it to fit snugly around the queen’s head or heraldic motif. With thicker hairline strokes than normal Old English, a less sharp, warmer feel than lettering scripted with a pen, and circular instead of rhombic punctuation, this font is an attempt to capture the round-cornered softness of the die-struck lowercase blackletter. To increase harmony and homogeneity between the cases, the uppercase is narrower and simpler than is customary, without the excessive width or antiquated flamboyance of the traditional blackletter. It might even allow text set in capitals to look acceptable.

A calligraphic script font Millettre is the last member of the trilogy of types designed by Lyudmila Mikhailova. First two fonts Milanette and Milafleur were released earlier. The font is based on author's lettering artworks which she did for many years for companies who produced greeting cards. The characters of the font have rough contours simulating lettering by a pointed pen on a rough paper. The character set covers standard Western, Central European and Cyrillic code pages. The default version of the font is presented by disconnected script, but connected variant is also included and organized as an alternative stylistic set. The font also contains some initial, finial and alternative forms of letters. Recommended for use in advertising and display typography. Released by ParaType in 2011.

Simpliciter Sans is a typeface based on the lettering used in the 20th century on technical drawings, either written by free hand or using templates. The lettering was made with a round pen, therefore all lines got rounded ends. All lines had the same thickness in uppercase, lowercase and small caps. The upright style was used on construction drawings and the italic style on machine drawings. The backslant style was used on maps for names of water bodies — seas, lakes, rivers etc. — and for water depth. Simpliciter Sans is primarily intended for texts on drawings, diagrams, charts and maps, but it can also be used for signs and labels. It also works surprisingly well as a body type in smaller sizes.
