Atonement is a splattery, scratchy font. I made it with a steel nibbed pen, a brush and some Chinese ink. I based it on my fonts Ravenheart, Qilin and American Grunge - mostly because I really like them. Of course, all of these fonts are influenced by the work of the great Ralph Steadman - someone I greatly admire. Atonement comes with ligatures for double letter combinations and a stash of diacritics.

Flottenheimer was done with a semi dry pen, that leaves the strokes quite rough. Some letters are more rough than other, giving a very realistic overall look to the text. To add more spice to the realistic look, I have added several versions of each letter. That means that there is 5 different versions of each letter that automatically cycles as you type! Packed with loads of accented characters!

Big Band JNL is a classic Art Deco typeface in every sense of the word. Bitumen is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid form of petroleum. When I created this font, it reminded me a bit of asphalt, hence the name. Bitumen is a handmade font based on Schmallfette Grotesk by Walter Haettenschweiler and Haettenschweiler font. The font was made with a Japanese brush pen, hence the bold lines. Bitumen comes in two styles: the regular, fat display font and a lighter version - both with italics.

Built in 1928 in Wichita, Kansas, the Uptown Theater started out as a movie house, but today still exists as a dinner theater. Online images of this vintage venue’s perpendicular wall sign show the theater’s name in an Art Nouveau influenced angular style with rounded terminals – similar to that of pen drawn sign lettering of the era. Adapted as a digital type font, Silent Film JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In 1994, John Benson designed the typefaces Caliban, Alexa and Balzano, all with similar characteristics. The typefaces are distinguished by their calligraphic style and their closeness to handwritten script. Based on a font called "architects' pen strokes" as delineated by Lawrence and Charles Strong in their The Art of Show Card Writing from 1922. hadowfield is a fantasy font which was inspired by the hand lettering on the Spiderwick movie posters (which itself was apparently based on Hand Skript One). Two pieces of vintage sheet music (“Honeymoon Hotel” and “By a Waterfall”) from Warner Brothers' 1933 musical “Footlight Parade” featured a hand-lettered bold alphabet with a touch of the 1930s Art Deco influence. These song sheets served as the basis for Pocomoke JNL. As informal and casual as the design is, its strength is in the boldness of the letter forms (which showcases the era of pen-and-ink display lettering).

A set of vintage lettering templates manufactured by Albert Nestler in Germany yielded this Art-Deco flavored typeface with many unusual letter forms. Monograph conjures ancient typewriters, telephone switchboards, vintage office machines past visions of the future. As though it were drawn with the rounded nib a of a Speedball "B" style pen, the soft curves and rounded serifs speak of a gentler less complicated time. It is nuanced with traces of the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th Century which stressed craftsmanship and preserving and emphasizing the qualities of construction and materials.

Yuge, apparently, is how New Yorkers pronounce huge. I have never been to New York, so I can’t tell if this is a fact. But I often hear a certain New Yorker pronounce it that way, so I guess it’s sort of true. Yuge is a handwritten font - made with a Sharpie pen. Believe me, it is a good font. It is fantastic. It is the best font ever. It is YUGE! ;-)

Cosmic Dust is dust that occurs in outer space or has fallen onto earth. Cosmic Dust font isn’t a dusty or celestial affair, no, it is a nice and useful font I made with a Sharpie pen. This font is a very new typeface from 2022. It is based on biro pen writings. The name Hanka is the nick of the designer’s daughter. The family has seven weights (straight and oblique), which are OpenType sets with PostScript curves. Features include ligatures (classical and discretionary), number formats (tabular/proportional, lining/old style), fractions, old-style formats, stylistic alternates, and kerning. Brouillard means ‘fog’ in French. I like the ‘oui’ letter combination and I was looking for a name for this font that contained those letters. I found Brouillard and presto: a new font was born! Brouillard font was handmade with a Japanese pen. It is an elegant, curvy and quite stylish font with a bit of a roughness to it - just enough to catch your attention. The Bermuda Family was designed by Garrett Boge and Paul Shaw, in the vein of freely-drawn showcard lettering — jaunty, fun and friendly. In fact the drawings were made with a Speedball™ B-series pen nib, the stock tool of the showcard letterer. Bermuda Open is a stroked outline version and its character shapes are repeated in the other three styles, each with a separate fill variant — Solid, Dots and Squiggles.

Ad Hoc is a fake. My intention was to design a typeface with the looks of the characters drawn on paper with a marker pen. But they are all drawn on a monitor, with no scanner ever involved. That's the reason why they look so regular. Ad Hoc is Latin and stands for, approximately, for this reason". The expression itself is often used for something unplanned, improvised. Ad Hoc was released in 1992.

Hamada is a script typeface based on the powerful work of English calligrapher Gaynor Goffe. Hamada captures looseness and charming irregularities of the pen on the page, allowing ink to edge out from the contours and move across curves and letters. Thanks to OpenType, Hamada creates an impression very much like that of real calligraphy. Most of the letters in Hamada have alternate versions; the typeface comes with ligatures, ending swashes, and more.

Shinano is an old province of Japan. Kobayashi Issa (1763 - 1828), a famous Japanese Haiku poet and Buddhist priest, was born here. Together with Bashō he is my favourite Haiku poet. Shinano font was hand made using a Japanese brush pen. At first glance it may look like a messy script, but underneath its rough appearance beats a poetic heart. Comes with some alternates and ligatures and a whole lot of diacritics.

I can’t remember when I had a true lazy morning.. I was a looong time ago, before I had children! Even now, when I’m down with the flu, I can’t stay in bed for too long - it really seems like a waste of time! Lazy Morning is a nice handwritten font. I made it with a Sharpie pen. It comes with all diacritics and double letter ligatures for you to play with.

Poem Script is a mixed collection of interpretations conjuring a late nineteenth century American pen script style. Though not an actual Italian letterform, this style was called “Italian Alphabet” stemming from an old penman’s term for an alphabet where the stress or shades are opposite their normal placement. The American variant followed from the late eighteenth century British hand also confusingly called “Italian Hand,” which itself evolved from some seventeenth century French batarde scripts. It showcases the phenomenal control and mastery of hand skills required to create such ornamental and lively letters centuries ago. Producing the shaded strokes in reversed positions such as this required holding the pen in a position horizontal to the baseline, or the letterforms would have to be written backwards or by rotating the paper at peculiar and extreme angles to achieve the effect. Exotic, elaborate and very attractive, Poem Script contains plenty of variations on each letter and comes with hundreds of calligraphic ornaments. Poem Script received a Certificate of Excellence at the Type Directors Club NY and was selected at the Bienal Tipos Latinos 2012.
