We would like to introduce a new font Maiolica. We were inspired by Italian ceramics and floral patterns on square tiles. We decorated the empty space of letters with geometric patterns. That's how this font turned out! Maiolica typeface includes three fonts: Decorative, Inline, Symbol. Mix and match them to get interesting design. When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

For the font design project, I had decided to make a typeface which would reflect the style architectural of Zaha Hadid. My purpose was the presentation of a font to her as Zaha Hadid was alive during my project process. But nearly at the end of the project we unfortunately received the death news of her. Spy Royal is a junctionless script typeface and comes in 6 styles. It’s a hybrid between script and so called streamline fonts. The origins are based on an advertising by Japan Airlines, dated around 1954, offering flights to San Francisco, Honolulu and Okinawa in the new DC-6B “Pacific Courier” airplane. Only the letters for the words “JAPAN AIR LINES” were used, so that the creative part was to reimagine a full font out of just a handful of uppercase letters.
