Blackout is the first and signature font to the Blackout Foundry. Inspired by gothic structures, but maintaining a constructive form. Everything in balance, simple, and straightforward. Tale is an experiment to convert the script-style calligraphy into bitmap format. The two variants have the same dimensions, but (as the naming suggests), Forty has double amount of pixels in it when compared to Twenty. Both variants have hand made bitmaps to compliment these correlating point sizes, and you can always get the appropriate bitmaps by multiplying by two.

In 2009, a book from 1897 in the library of the University of Wisconsin caught David Berlow’s attention. It was set in a clear text face—a predecessor of Bookman—cast by the Western Type Foundry who called it Custer. Upon noting how well the typeface worked in sizes of 6 and 7 points, Berlow developed it into a member of the Reading Edge series specifically designed for small text on screen. Custer RE was a broad and approachable typeface drawn large on the body with a tall x-height to maximize its apparent size when set very small. This was the beginning of the newly expanded series; in 2020, Berlow added new optical sizes and weights, growing the original design’s versatility up to headline sizes.

Bisco Condensed is a small capital design inspired by hand lettered memorial wall art from the Harlem section of New York City. As a memorial, this design is dedicated to a type design colleague who lost his long battle with cancer. This font is a tribute to his strength and his liveliness. Font designed from this who was used by an unknown printer in Lyon (France) to print the “Conte de Griseldis ” (Griseldis' tale), from Petrarque, inspired by Boccace, in 1495. The original font has a relatively small number of special characters and ligature, for the time. This font includes “long s”, naturally, as typicaly medieval but numerous letters - as accented ones - were added for this version. A render sheet, enclosed with the file, helps to identify them on keyboard. It is used variously in web-site titles, posters and fliers design, editing ancient texts or greeting cards as a very decorative and fine font... This font works at a small size like 9, remaining clear and easy to read on screen, but always better when printed.

Tabac Slab was created by combining several contradictory influences, the result of which is a universal linear font. The combination of brisk serifs and refined calligraphic details in the structure of the characters serves to create an original concept that mixes influences from both book and advertising graphics. Serifs aid legibility in long texts, while small drawn details realise their full potential in sizes of twenty-four points and larger. The basis for our Egyptienne was Tabac Sans, with which Slab logically forms a harmonic duo. The addition of bracket-less serifs caused the typeface to thicken and become solidly anchored on the lines, giving a firm answer to all typographers who like to complain about the slight exuberance of grotesque fonts.

I only had this bouncy curve and a photograph of a daily menu (Truite Meunière) I took outside an obscure Paris restaurant when starting the design of this font. But while working on it I suddenly started thinking about Jacques Tati the famous but almost forgotten french director of Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Jour des Fêtes, Mon Oncle, Playtime, Trafic etc. I thought about his bouncy walk and his hilarious ideas. The memories never left me while working on the font, so I decided to name the font after this great French moviemaker who gave me so many happy hours. JY Raj has had a lengthy gestation. The original one was a sans serif adaptation of a slab serif typeface design by Jure Stojan. Raj looked instantly better as a sans serif. After refining it further one lengthy night in 2001, he showed the drafts to Jack Yan, who completed the character sets and finished the kerning. A characterful sans serif, JY Raj pushes the boundaries of what is possible with various geometric shapes, combining legibility and tradition with sharp, unexpected angles. As with Stojan's earlier JY Koliba, it possesses a delightful balance, thanks to the designer's eye for detail and typographic harmony. The name has little to do with the Asian subcontinent: it translates to paradise in Stojan's mother tongue, Slovenian.

Martin Crantz (or sometimes Krantz) of the three, including Ulrich Gering and Michael Friburger, that set up a press at the Sorbonne in 1470 was likely the fellow who had the technical know how how to cast the type itself, hence the name of this new face that is based on his work. This font has been expanded to meet the demands of modern day use but it also contains a number of specialized glyphs that allow for the recreation of text in the manner of his day with such characters as the -rum abbreviation and other handy Renaissance oddities. Since this face was designed prior to 1501 there is no italic variant in keeping with the spirit of historical accuracy.

Carved in the wall... a Legend: "Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Aramathia: He who finds the Grail must face three, maybe four, challenges. First, the path of God; Second, the word of God; Third, the breath of God, and fourth is the Font of God. Only a font that is valiant, pure of spirit and includes international characters, both European AND Cyrillic -- may find the Holy Grail... in the Castle of AARRGGGHHH… That's all it says; the guy carving it must have died before he could finish.

Professor Minty is a cartoon-inspired kind of comic font with a lotta bounce and a whole buncha spooky fun. Both regular and bold are based on Chank’s first fonts, Mister Frisky and Uncle Stinky. The Bold version is brand new in 2011, never before available. But here both of those fonts are combined into one extra-savvy font that does all kinds of tricks. It has many extra special OpenType features, like Swash, Contextual Alternates and Small caps and more. There’s even a “decaf” feature (Stylistic Set #1) which tones it down a bit if the account people think it is just too exciting. Works good for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day, oddly enough. Who knew those three holidays had anything in common?

Farmer's Marker is an ode to the hobby-farmer and their honest and hardworking (but not too serious) lifestyle. The font reflects a vision of a farmer who quickly scrawls down her produce (72 Eggs + 20L of Milk + 2kg Honey) before she heads off to the market to do her best to sell what she has farmed. It is a casual, freehand, marker script that doesn't take itself too seriously. It is hand drawn by me, then meticulously perfected in Illustrator while leaving in just enough small imperfections that the font retains it's humanistic, hand-drawn and personal feel. The font will lend itself perfectly to rustic restaurant menu's, organic branding and packaging, social media content, child-centric design, travel posters, humanitarian organisations and much more.

Manhattan was designed in 1970 for ITC by Tom Carnase, who also created Avant Garde Gothic. The distinguishing characteristic of this designer's work is found in the emphasis on the thick-thin constrast. In this case, Carnase approached the border of the impossible. The heavy vertical strokes stand opposite the finest of lines and the thick columns dominate the overall look. The basic forms are strictly constructed, as are those of Morris F. Benton's Broadway of 1925, to which many parallels can be found. Manhattan is best used for applications which will not be placed too far from the viewer, as at too great a distance the fine lines can no longer be seen. It should be used exclusively for headlines in medium point sizes.

HS Ali was designed in memoriam of my brother - Ali Abu Afash who was martyred during the last aggression on Gaza in summer 2014. HS Ali introduced a modern OpenType Arabic typeface, which had the characterstic, features of Kufi style with noticeable both curvy and sharp segments; beside the refinements of its letters that made it more readable. HS Ali is a display font that has been designed to be used in titles in modern graphic and publication projects. It supports Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Kurdish languages and contains four weights: Light, regular, medium and bold which can be condsiderd as and elaboration to the library of Arabic fonts contemporary models that meet the variant purposes of designs for all tastes.

Alfina is a chancery typeface that shows a modern temperament, but is inspired by the eponymous town of Torre Alfina, one of the most beautiful medieval villages of Italy, situated on the edge of the plateau Alfina, a few miles from of Orvieto. The place where is the castle is steeped in history. Its roots date back to the Lombard kingdom (seventh century); later it was under the rule of Monaldeschi (1200-1700) and more recently (1880) the property of the rich French banker Count Edoardo Cahen of Antwerp, who was responsible for the present aspect of the Castle. Alfina has soft lines, very slender upper cases and thin overlapping strokes; The stylistic alternates are particularly important, and the type is enriched by many, different OpenType features.

This family was inspired by the edition De Civitate Dei (by Sanctus Augustinus) printed in 1467 in Sobiano (Italy, Roma) by Konrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz who was the Punchcutter. It is one of the first few “Roman style” fonts, just before the birth of Jenson’s pattern (look at 1470 Jenson Latin). The present font contains all of the specific latin abbreviations and ligatures used in the original (about 54). Added are the accented characters and a few others not in use in this early period of printing. Decorated letters such as 1512 Initials, 1550 Arabesques, 1565 Venetian, or 1584 Rinceau can be used with this family without anachronism. If Italic style is required (not yet existing in early time of printing), we recommend using 1557 Italique.

Stu is based on the penmanship of the late Raoul "Stu" Stuart. Raoul's penmanship was always admired by those who saw it; it was a first glimpse into the artistic and creative side of an otherwise easy-going, funny guy. The print variants exude a soft yet masculine feel, while the scripts evoke a sense of sentimentality and romance. Stu features dingbats which say something about Raoul: affectionate and romantic (heart), a big coffee drinker (coffee cup), a great cook (spoon and fork), a music lover (musical note), and a prankster (winking smiley). (The winking smiley is available in all the font styles, while each of the other four dingbats is unique to one font style.) Stu is a tribute to the coolest dad in the world.

Linotype Startec, from Jan Tomás, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. This is another fun font from Tomás, who also designed Alphabat, and the two share some characteristics. Linotype Startec is an outline font whose unique forms are reminiscent of futuristic dreams and space adventures. It should be used in point sizes of at least 18, but the phrase 'the bigger the better' fits this font well. The careful details and figures of the alphabet turn into UFOs and space ships from another world when set in very large point sizes. Linotype Startc is best for very short texts and headlines.

Freckle Face Pro draws its inspiration from Pillbury's “Funny Face” drink mix packages. I loved these drink mixes when I was a kid, not only because of the great flavors, but also the fun packaging. Who knew the love affair would renew itself later by finding myself loving the lettering too! An rough-hewn appearance, frolicking baseline, and fun but legible letterforms makes this font a real crown pleaser. The SmallCaps and extensive figure sets give Freckle Face Pro a more diverse design voice, ranging from lightly comic to borderline insane. Trithemius, a 15th century Abbott, and influential counselor to Emperor Maximilian I, was also an author who wrote both histories and the first printed work on cryptography which gained him much adverse notoriety. He has been long regarded as a mystic and some of his works were therefore banned. However, it may have been his intention to cloak his cryptology essays in mystical writing to keep people from easily grasping the subject matter, which it has been recently demonstrated, at heart was really cryptological methodology. This font is based on a printed version of the Polygraphiae -- a text that included many methods of encryption. The examplar for this font in that text was described as anothor method of Alchemists recording secrets.

Proto-Sinaitic (also referred to as Proto-Canaanite when found in Canaan, or Early Alphabetic) is found in a small corpus of c. 40 inscriptions and fragments, the vast majority from Serabit el-Khadim in the Sinai Peninsula, dating to the Middle Bronze Age. They are considered the earliest trace of alphabetic writing and the common ancestor of both the Ancient South Arabian script and the Phoenician alphabet, which led to many modern alphabets including the Greek alphabet. According to common theory, Canaanites or Hyksos who spoke a Canaanite language repurposed Egyptian hieroglyphs to construct a different script. The earliest Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions are mostly dated to between the mid-19th (early date) and the mid-16th (late date) century BC.

The Adinkra name, by legend, comes from the King who was conquered by the Ashante people of Ghana. The king, Adinkra, wore wonderful patterned fabrics. Adinkra means “goodbye,” and the symbols were reserved for funeral garments. Today the symbols are part of the Ghana popular culture and around the world. Once I had a young, very eager and interested designer in my employ. We got into talking about where our letterforms come from and the habits in perception we are used to. He did not quite believe me. So I said, let's try to design a typeface where everything is just the opposite of what we are used to. We really had a hard time, our habits crept up on us all the time. But after a couple of weeks we finally finished this typeface and wanted to call it crazytype, but my young apprentice ­ who did most of the manual labor ­ said Contype sounded crazier.
