Salacious is my soft/rough all-caps font, inspired by both comics and grafitti. The weight and width of the letters varies a bit. Not in a disturbing way, but more in a lively and organic way. I've added 5 (slightly) different versions of each letter (which automatically cycles as you type!) The letter shapes are a bit rough, due to the fact that they are handmade, and all corners are rounded, which gives a nice soft look!

Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. Sunwind is not really made to write long copy. It is a font for shopsigns and short sentences that need that hot, sunny and windy touch. And that is how I got around to designing it: I saw some letters on a shopsign in Cannes when driving into town. I shouted at my son Julius: "Quick take a picture of that sign, the blue one." That's what he did, only he used the macro setting, so I had a very small sign but lots of nice background. Anyway I got the basic idea! Then I made a lot of sketches and this is what came out. It was expected that Joluvian’s third type font would be inspired by the city where he currently resides: Madrid, Spain. His previous creations had originated in Venezuela (Zulia) and The Philippines (Salamat), both, places where he had once lived. Joluvian believes “now is the time to pay tribute and show gratitude towards a city that has bestowed me with so many fortunes.” He considers that Madrid’s people, streets, scents, flavor and sounds are gift enough to awaken the creative urgency in any artist. This time around, it is being expressed through the crafts of the Typographic industry. Since his arrival in Spain, Joluvian has been attached to the city’s central area, specifically to the renowned Atocha Street and its railroad station. It was precisely on that street that Joluvian and Mauco Sosa, his friend and partner, decided to establish the Patera Studio: a charming creative space that birthed the concept for this new font which they proudly named Atocha Script. The artists where still in the final phases of their previous script, Salamat, when the idea for Atocha came about. This dynamic is actually very typical of the artistic process, in which every finished product spawns the need to create its next level offspring. “Working on Atocha and Atocha Caps has been a very pleasant journey. We have given our best efforts, for we wanted to offer a typeface that was both versatile and user-friendly on a number of applications, showing a wide scope of alternatives in our glyphs,” says the artist. I was playing around with an old brush I found in our kitchen: it had fallen under the stove and it had probably been hiding there for quite some time! I dusted it off, got my Chinese ink and set to work. The result is a scary-ish font. Mortal Coil comes with discretionary ligatures for double lower case letter combinations.

Bolshy is a stroppy font whose x-height has got ideas above its station, it’s ended up being equal to the cap height. Bolshy doesn’t go completely Bauhaus, and although the boundaries are somewhat blurred, the distinction between upper and lower case just about remains intact. There is something slightly Cyrillic about Bolshy’s bulbous terminals, exotic shapes and condensed curvature.

The 1913 sheet music for "There's A Girl in the Heart of Maryland (with a Heart That Belongs to Me)" may have had no shortage of words in the title - fifteen to be exact, but it also offered some nice hand lettering in the Art Nouveau style. An image spotted on the internet of a brass shipping stencil for the Royal Quality Brand (for the John H. Fitch Company of Youngstown, Ohio – a coffee and spice merchant). The lettering style for “Royal Quality” was a hand-cut, condensed, slightly flared sans serif with various character flourishes, giving the letters a stylish, somewhat regal look.
