Write like the inventor of the diesel engine — it’s possible with the Diesel Rudolf Script (patterned after the original handwriting of Rudolf Diesel)... In 2008 the city of Augsburg and the MAN Group celebrated the 150th birthday of Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine which was named after him. With the help of a few preserved original letters, it was possible to create a convincing digital version of Rudolf Diesel’s personal handwriting. The engineer and inventor Rudolf Diesel was born in Paris in 1858 and also went to school there. In1870 his family moved to England and Rudolf was sent to relatives in Augsburg where he continued going to school. Later, after completing his studies in Munich, he began working as an engineer in the machine factory Linde. Alone this part of his life makes clear why Rudolf Diesel’s handwriting was so ”jerky,“ hesitant and inconsistent. He learned to write according to the French style, that is, Latin cursive — completely different from the very correct and neat German handwriting taught at that time which he had to learn at 13 years of age. These circumstances explain why his handwriting is ”messy“ (especially for those days) with its mixtures of letter forms within a text, even within individual words. Plus, he obviously did not attach much importance to ”pretty writing.“ Sometimes the characters are wide, then narrow, sometimes large and clear and then again crammed and primitive. The individuality is emphasized with characteristics derived from quill and ink. Online auctions continue to be a surprising wealth of font design inspiration. In this instance, a number of silk embroidered Art Deco initials inside inverted triangles inspired Deco Pennant Initials JNL. The uppercase version is white lettering on a black background – similar to the originals. On the lowercase keys is a set of initials that are black on white with a black border. Since the inverted triangles resemble pennants, there’s a solid black blank on the left parenthesis key and a outlined blank one on the right parenthesis key. In this way, the initials could be used for monograms or interspersed with the blanks to form short banner messages.

Rutherford is clear, robust and authoritative, and reads well at small text sizes while also having the required heft for larger headlines. A wide range of weights makes it a versatile choice for magazines, branding, brochures and advertising. A slightly condensed obround serif with squared stroke terminals. The t, j and f curve around to harmonize with the terminals on the a and g, as does the tail of the Q. The italic incorporates cursive forms on the ends of the lower right and upper left strokes, and uses a single-story a. Vintage sheet music was initially a partial inspiration for what started out as a simple retro typeface, but the basic hand-lettered design from the Art Deco era lent itself to some further experimentation. Geometric shapes were added to the original monoline letters and numerals and the end result was a marvelous display face called Cafe Society JNL. During the 1930s, "Cafe Society" was popular slang for the financially privileged during the Great Depression who dined at fine cafes while others who were able to eat out did so at diners and cafeterias. Available along with Cafe Society JNL is the original version, Cafe Society Monoline JNL.

Max J. Gradl was a German jewelry designer. A Web search today turns up several examples of his work from the turn of the 20th century. He seemed to favor green stones in silver metalwork. Gradl also did advertising work and co-authored a book on architectural design. Most important for our purposes, though, are the incredible hand lettered alphabets and monograms the man left behind. I’ve digitized one of those delightful alphabets and tried to keep it true to the original. Beyond the base character set of letters, numerals and basic punctuation, I had to extrapolate forms that, I hope, hold true to Gradl’s design. Enjoy!

An ad for the annual Variety Club Convention appeared in the March 18, 1940 issue of "The Film Daily. The main headline was hand lettered in a classic Art Deco "solid" style of sans serif - ultra bold and with no counters - but had one additional feature: 'engraved' lines to the left of each character. This has now been expanded into the digital typeface Trade Convention JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Variety Clubs (now know as Variety - The Children's Charity) was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928 by entertainers specifically to aid children. This humanist sans-serif typeface was exhaustively designed, full-featured typeface family that reveals its character and distinctiveness in complex text. It features a large complement of ligatures, lining and old-style figures, expert characters, dingbats (arrows, brackets, and symbols for both Regular weights). In the original Lisboa Pro the forms of the letters are humanist, with hooked headterminals, the characters contains medium contrast with a left-angled stress on the strokes. After ten years from the first version publication, this new version (0.2) is available with Latin (Western, Central Europe) and Cyrillic alphabets. It was selected by Our Favorite Fonts of 2005 (Typographica).

Herold is a bold Art Nouveau advertising face released by H. Berthold, Berlin, Germany in 1901. It is also seen under the name “Herold Reklame.” The design is attributed to Hermann Hoffmann by the Klingspor Museum. A herold (‘herald’ in English, ‘heraldus’ in Latin) is one who delivers proclamations and announcements. Medieval heralds are often pictured with a horn with which to get everyone’s attention prior to performing his function. His only PA system was his own voice. Left and right glyphs of a herald with horn may be found at positions 137 and 172. Herold is quite compact with a high x-height, just right for making -- what else? -- announcements.

Ok, so many of you are now probably wondering if I am a teenager. Nope. But I was once, and I had alot of pent up angst like alot of other teens, and maybe this typeface is my outlet for what is left of those teenage days of mine. Scriptek was created by British designer David Quai in 1992, based on the constructivist forms which became popular after the First World War with the progressing industrialization in Moskow. Typefaces such as Scriptek were often used in the propaganda of totalitarian political systems and can still be seen on monuments like the central train station in Milan or political posters of the 1930s and 40s. The robust Scriptek has strong serifs in the upper left and lower right of characters and this, together with the diagonal strokes of many lower case letters, gives the font a dynamic feel.
