Tambau is a display typeface crafted by Matheus “Fio” Gonçalves, a Brazilian design student, still in college, inspired by Brazilian concert urban posters and wood type that I saw at the Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo. The font was first made for a magazine project in design school, making it beautiful on giant pages headlines, billboards, signs, etc. There’s no lowercase, the character set is dramatic and objective. The uppercase is actually expanded letterforms causing some eyes and breathing paths to the very condensed and very modular glyphs, which creates a quite interesting striped texture between form, counterform and spacing. The lots of ligatures come to give it more closure between the letters, when they try to form blank spaces. So do the diacritics, fitting in the space given to them by the dynamic letterforms, making dense rectangular blocks. You may use Tambau as big as you can or do a high tracking to it and still it will be pretty. The titles can be dynamic, just condensed or just large. It’s on your own. Don’t be afraid to play with Tambau, it’s an alive typography. Curiosity: For the magazine in design school, the pilot project of Tambau was cut in a MDF board, to print it with texture and paint. Later was added more characters, languages and special glyphs to it. Gerard Unger’s new typeface Alverata is a twenty-first-century type-face inspired by the shapes of Romanesque capitals in inscriptions of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, without being a close imitation of them. It is additionally based on the early twentieth-century model, but tweaked so as to prevent blandness and monotony. Alverata performs beautifully in both screen and on paper, delivering excellent legibility. Its letters are open and friendly in small sizes and lively and attractive in large sizes. They are robust, and show refinement in their detail. Unger’s Alverata is an extensive type family, with versions for both formal and informal applications, and with Greek and Cyrillic relatives. Alverata consists of three different fonts: Alverata, Alverata Irregular and Alverata Informal, that vary in form and width, but maintain the same spirit. The Irregular version is particularly inspired by the Insular letterforms, the uncials, and their constantly changing positioning. Alverata strikes a balance among Europe’s diversity of languages, combining contemporary typographical practices with features of medieval letterforms, from the time when Europe came into being. Visually, some written languages, such as Czech and Maltese, differ quite strongly from languages like English and German, notably because of their many accented characters. While other typefaces will show this difference, Alverata removes it. As a result, Alverata enables harmonious convergence of languages.  For the development of the Greek letterforms, Unger collaborated with Gerry Leonidas (University of Reading) and Irene Vlachou (Athens), and with Tom Grace on the Cyrillic letterforms.

My brother is an architect, and I have always loved his lettering, you know, the style of writing that can be found on architectural drawings. There is a common thread to it, yet each architect or engineer brings their own personality to it. I have seen a similar style being used by some hand-letterers for invitations, place cards and signage. Inspired, I set out to create my own, and the result is my new typeface, Robard! I wanted something compact, somewhat modular, done quickly but with control, and sourced from hand-lettering. Starting out with a handful of pigment ink pens, I settled on a 0.1mm Copic Multi-Liner, and using a light table with a grid underneath the paper, I cranked out grouping after grouping, letter after letter, numbers, punctuation, accents, just trying to zero in on the feeling and the look I was after. There were some ideas that didn't work, like unicase (there would be no regular lowercase), or swash alternates. Ultimately, I ended up with a decent array of glyphs to choose from, and alternates like oldstyle numbers, and an alternate set of caps for the lowercase slots, and even alternative figures so doubles like 88 would be different. In the font, the OpenType ligature code automatically alternates the cap and lowercase (alternate cap) letters, and numbers as you type, lending Robard that hand-lettered look in a digital typeface that I was hoping for. There are also oldstyle figures, and unlimited fractions, ordinals, and a few alternate letters. I hope you like Robard!

Created by German designer Jürgen Weltin, Linotype’s Agilita is a contemporary humanist sans serif family with a wide variety of weights, including both ultra thin hairline options and heavier, dark type. Agilita has rather classical proportions; its clear ascenders and descenders lend more distinct word shapes. Weltin’s design has a dynamic, yet strong and very functional appearance with a fine but clear emphasis on the horizontals. This traditional approach makes it a versatile typeface for large-scale text setting, but it can also be used in complex information design projects, and orientation systems, for example. Hence it was developed carefully into a wide range type family system consisting of 32 styles. This even covers the requirements for display and headline setting. Corresponding condensed weights are suitable where horizontal space is scarce, as in narrow columns and tables, for example. The Agilta Hairline and Agilta Ultra Thin styles were especially made for display use. These fonts should be set at a minimum size of 20 pt for printed project, and about 40 pt on output to laser printers, depending on the paper used. Agilita’s character sets include special symbols and signs that may be used in dictionaries; like arrows for lemmata and signs for cross references, idioms or colloquial language. There are two sets of arrows available in each weight for use in orientation systems. Each font in the Agilta family is built according to Linotype’s Extended European character set guidelines. These offer support for more than 48 Latin-based languages used in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, including Baltics and Turkey.

Homelessfonts is an initiative by the Arrels foundation to support, raise awareness and bring some dignity to the life of homeless people in Barcelona Spain. Each of the fonts was carefully digitized from the handwriting of different homeless people who agreed to participate in this initiative. Not being able to have sex, not having any privacy until it leaves you empty.” On the street he follows his passion for art and writing as best he can, using old cardboard when he can’t find paper and listening to the music that comes to him. His way of thinking and expressing himself leaves people wide-eyed and open-mouthed, but even so he admits he’s a solitary man. “Solitude is an individual word. A solitary type like me can’t bring the word solitude to the whole world.”

Stubble is a distressed grunge font with many useful variations that make things easy. It comes in both a Regular and Bold version, and a Smudged version as if the print block has slipped a little bit just at the vital moment. Also there’s 2 jumbled versions with the letters and numbers, and some punctuation, at odd angles and slightly off-whack; there’s 2 versions with little bits of overprint on most of the main characters (as if the corners of the block or stamp have just caught the paper); a couple of Caps Only versions; plus condensed and expanded versions of the main faces. The Bold version is not an exact expanded version of the Regular version, please note, the characters are different (i.e. the misprinting is different) in the two weights. Western and Central European accented characters are included, and there’s a set of replacements for double-letter combinations such as bb, dd and OO, TT, so that 2 different letters will appear - which avoids having exactly the same grunge letter appearing twice in succession (20 or more pairings for each case, all the pairings that reasonably exist) which work as ligature replacements. The whole family constitutes a comprehensive package that offers a great variety of ways of presenting a grunge typeface for display, headlines and posters, while maintaining the thread of the same sans-serif style. The zip package contains both the TTF and OTF versions of the font. Install only one version on the same machine, installing both versions may produce all sorts of erratic behavior.

The Palatino™ typeface was first designed over 50 years ago by Hermann Zapf, and is probably the most universally admired and used of his type designs. In 1950, it was punchcut in metal by August Rosenberger at D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt am Main, and then adapted for Linotype machine composition. Zapf optimized Palatino's design for legibility by giving it open counters and carefully weighted strokes, producing a typeface that was legible even on the inferior paper of the post-World War II period. The font was named after Giambattista Palatino, a master of calligraphy from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Palatino is a typeface based on classical Italian Renaissance forms. It has become a modern classic in itself, and is popular among professional graphic designers and amateurs alike. Palatino works well for both text and display typography. The new Palatino™ Linotype typefaces are OpenType format fonts, which include many newly designed characters in four large character sets; including extensive support for the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets, as well as for Central European and many other languages. The classic modernist FS Alvar grew out of a library of pure modular shapes gathered by Fontsmith’s master of the abstract starting point, Mr Phil Garnham. “It was a collection that just had to be explored and brought to life in a typographic voice. “We debated long and hard about this. It was big decision to make a shift away from the typefaces that people knew us for. And we didn’t want to compromise our reputation of well crafted typographic quality”. Modular forms A headline font that’s both graphic and functional, in the modernist tradition, FS Alvar focused Fontsmith’s eyes on the bigger issue of what makes a font show its age. “Looking at those fonts from the 1980s that were supposed to represent the ‘future’,” says Phil, “they looked so dated now. With Alvar, we weren’t concerned with creating future-thinking typography but with exploring form for form’s sake, and how that can evolve to create letterforms. Modular forms with a typographic eye.” Stencilled The concept for Alvar first materialised back in 2001 with some sketches Phil made while still at Middlesex University. Eight years later, something made him dig them out again. “There was something really nice about the proportions of that first design. Working on it again, I thought about it properly, but it still needed something to give it that edge. “Jason stood up in the studio and supplied the missing link: ‘Why don’t we make it stencilled?’ He didn’t mean in an obvious way, but by building a kind of architectural stencil into the form. It worked and the idea of using an architect’s name (Alvar Aalto) to describe the font felt perfect.” Featured in... Guanabara is the third release of Plau Type Foundry. It started from the need of a wayfinding typeface that had personality enough to be the brand typeface for a city. The city of Rio de Janeiro, with its never-ending curves and all year long summer weather provided the constraints and requirements of this typeface. From there, it evolved to be a workhorse, with 8 weights from Thin to Black and matching true italics. It just had to have the features that all us designers have grown to love, such as alternate letters (a, g and r for the romans), tabular and proportional figures in lining and oldstyle set-ups as well as small caps, fractions and all that jazz (I mean, samba). And it needed to be recognizable and distinct. For that, design features like tapered R legs, capitals with classic proportions and calligraphic finishes on the terminals proved crucial. And last, but not least, like Rio, it had to welcome many cultures. We came to think of it as the “Typeface from Ipanema”, with a classic, timeless look, swinging elegance and joyful attitude.

Florian Fecher’s Lektorat font family is one for the books, and for the screens, and for the magazines. While an editorial’s main goals are to entertain, inform, and persuade, more should be considered. For example, clear divisions are necessary, not just from one article to the next, but in how each is positioned as op-ed or fact-based, infographic or table, vilifying or uplifting. From masthead to colophon, Lektorat has six concise text styles and 21 display styles to captivate, educate, and motivate within any editorial purpose. Magazines and related publications are notoriously difficult to brand and then to format accordingly. The research behind Lektorat focused on expression versus communication and what it takes for a great typeface to accomplish both tasks. In the changeover from the 19th to 20th century, German type foundry Schelter & Giesecke published several grotesque families that would become Lektorat’s partial inspiration. Experimentation with concepts from different exemplars gave birth to Lektorat’s manifest character traits: raised shoulders, deep incisions within highly contrasted junctions, and asymmetrical counters in a sans family. After thoroughly analysing magazine publishing and editorial designs, Florian discovered that a concise setup is sufficient for general paragraph text. So Lektorat’s text offering is concentrated into six total styles: regular, semibold, and bold with their obliques. Stylistic sets are equally minimal; an alternate ‘k, K’ and tail-less ‘a’ appear in text only. No fluff, no wasted “good intentions”, just a laser-like suite to focus the reader on the words. The display styles were another matter. They aim to attract attention in banners, as oversized type filling small spaces, photo knockouts, and in subsidiary headings like decks, callouts, sections, and more. For these reasons, three dialed-in widths — Narrow, Condensed, and Compressed — complete the display offerings in seven upright weights each, flaunting 21 headlining fonts in total. Madison Antiqua was original released as a metal typeface for hand-setting in 1965. The letters were produced by D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, Germany. Their design was based heavily on an earlier German typeface named Amts-Antiqua, which had also been produced by Stempel. Amts-Antiqua is credited to Henrich Hoffmeister, and he developed it between 1909 and 1919. Madison Antiqua is an excellent selection for body text in magazines and newspapers. The typeface features a characteristic x-height, and attention-grabbing serifs. For a time, Madison Antiqua was associated with advertising design, because of its namesake: Madison Avenue in New York. Madison Avenue is a global center of advertising excellence.

Avantgarde fonts Batory and Batoswash are monoline sansserifs designed by Bo Berndal. The futuristic Batory (think Bladerunner and Total Recall) and the spicier relative Batoswash come in three versions: Narrow, Middle and Wide. The font family is available in Truetype and Postscript for Mac and PC. Bo Berndal, born 1924, has been designing typefaces over 56 years, for Monotype, Linotype and other foundries. "Batory is a monoline reaction to my many calligraphic fonts", says Bo Berndal. "That is also the reason I did several widths instead of weights. Batory has short stems and high x-height. Batoswash is a Batory gone wild!" The successful Batory has already been used for logotypes, vignettes in magazines and as headline type.

Tropical Lounge is an interlocking display typeface inspired by the hand lettering in 60s pulp magazine covers. It’s filled with a playful and vibrant 60s vibe, as well as modern OpenType features.
