Linotype Laika is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was created by Dutch designer Mark van Wageningen, who based its forms on those of a sans serif font but gave them wavy, irregular contours. They look almost as though they lie just under the surface of a pool and the movement of the water gives them their undulating appearance. The dynamic Linotype Laika is especially good for headlines in larger point sizes or shorter texts in point sizes of 14 or larger.

Traiectum is the old Roman name for the city of Utrecht (in The Netherlands). When I started working on this font, I wanted to give it a Latin name and Traiectum sounded good! Traiectum is a hand drawn font with a regal and messy look. It was based on Goudy Old Style, a classic old-style serif typeface created in 1915 by Frederic W. Goudy. Traiectum is a multilingual, all caps font and I am sure you’ll find lots of uses for it. The city it was named after, Utrecht, is actually very nice! You should visit one day!

A 1964 piece of sheet music entitled “Old Soldiers Never Die (They Just Fade Away)” was based on the farewell speech General Douglas MacArthur gave to Congress on April 19, 1951. This particular edition of the song sheet had part of his speech (as well as its title) hand lettered in a free-form sans serif reminiscent of the lettering done by such noted lettering artists as Paul Coker and Saul Bass. The casual and playful style of this type design became the inspiration for Swing Vote JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The concept of a bold connected script with a hand lettered feel has been on my bucket list for decades. I imagined a pretentious, ornate, swashy look, a variety of word-end embellishments, heaps of ligatures and underscores. It took a weekend workshop on Python Scripting at Type@Cooper in San Francisco reinforcing the smarts of Opentype to make it happen. Hand drawn on paper using broad pen strokes for reference, the design was the easy part. The real work was in the back-end and self-imposed rigorous testing. Ingleby II is a typeface with firm roots in the classic stroke of the pen. The Eixample project is inspired by modernist signage of various examples found in the Eixample neighbourhood in Barcelona. The name of each subfamily is related to its location or to specific elements of the original sign. In 2003 we photographed a sign with the word GLACES painted on a refrigerator, on which, over the years, we have speculated on how to manage the concept of double vertical modulation. This model has been expanded and the original idea has been developed in three variants that oscillate between monolinear and high contrast. In order to increase its versatility, the character set includes small caps.

Soon after the introduction of webfonts, I began to see Insigne's Le Havre used frequently for web headlines, not so much for its Art Deco look as for its more compact proportions. Close Together was designed to alternate convex and concave letter sets, with convex letters on the upper-case keys and concave shapes on the lower-case keys. The OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt) does this automatically. Individually some of the letter shapes are strange and unsightly. They have the shapes that they have so that they fit snuggly with adjacent letters. The family has three weights: regular, bold, and extrabold. Stanzer is an interpretation of wood type combined with the idea of modern stencils. Instead of cutting every letter, we are presenting an example of how a modern stencil typeface could look like, as we have come to the conclusion that almost every letter works without cutting it. Stanzer is a Unicase typeface, available in three OpenType weights: Black, Shadow and Block. Stanzer first started as part of our diploma 2010 (it was called Stanley at that time). The basic idea behind this typeface is that it is fully stencil usable, and, unlike other stencil fonts, does not require any bridges (except for the O and Q). Almost every letter can be sprayed without inserting planks. However, Stanzer also offers the display weight Block, which is only suitable for print or online usage.

Electrostatic JNL was inspired by the 1930s lettering for radio station WMCA in New York City. It was found as part of an ad for the station in a 1932 radio broadcasting trade magazine. WMCA went on the air Feb. 6, 1925. According to Wikipedia, the "MCA" call letters stood for the Hotel McAlpin, where the station's original studio and transmitter were located. "W" is the call sign prefix for all broadcast stations East of the Mississippi River; with the exception of KDKA (Pittsburgh), which was the nation's first commercial radio station. Pounder Fonts were designed by Tom Nikosey / CozyFonts Foundry. This font, as all my fonts started with pencil sketches based on the letter O. Once I arrived at the comfortable shape I worked out the C, G, & Q. The H, M, T matched the visual weight and so I moved on to E & S. As the E & S are 2 of the most repeated characters in fonts' I wanted a little bit extra here. The font is obviously heavy weighted yet very legible and almost architectural in presence. There are flashes of Art Deco yet futuristic style. After sketching the feel of this font I was excited by the possibility of the numerals styling. I can see these used for many applications. Why the title Pounder? Why not it seems to fit.
