The inspiration for Brattleboro Stencil JNL was found within a reproduction of a sales catalog for stencil punch dies manufactured by S.M. Spencer & Co. (originally of Brattleboro, VT), circa 1868. Basically a sans serif letter, the font's unusual feature is its "split tail" design where the letters take on a bit of a "Western" look in appearance.

Bricola (rhymes with Nicola) is a condensed display face that contrasts soft curved outlines with sharp cuts and counters. Hesse Antiqua is the very first typeface designed by Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. It was a pioneering project originally created by her over 70 years ago as a set of brass punches to stamp into leather book covers and spines at the Bauer Type Foundry in Germany. In celebration of her 100th birthday on 2 January 2018, Ferdinand Ulrich and the Monotype Studio team collaborated with her to bring her brass punches to live as a digital font. Hesse Antiqua was developed with careful considerations and decisions to capture the nuance of the beautiful letterforms as they originally appeared in gold and blind stampings. We are pleased to introduce this modern OpenType typeface featuring a proper set of capitals and small capitals, figures, punctuation and some ornaments as well. Abalda adds to the number of “bad-taste” alphabets as seen on faded commercial inscriptions painted on neglected old houses. To enhance its warm character, some picturesque discretionary ligatures were added. Yes, Abalda shares its overall proportions with Zeppelin 43, hence the whole family is a good choice to combine with.

ITC Santangeli is based on an eighteenth century manuscript by Italian writing master Benedetto Santangeli. Giuseppe Errico's design exudes the elegance and patina of a baroque sculpture. The capitals have verve, and the richly flowing ascenders and descenders enhance the vintage panache of the design. Errico has even included alternate characters and ink splotches to enable a realistic reproduction of antique lettering. Whether for large display copy or short blocks of text, Santangeli speaks with resonance and grace.

Anker is a super-wide and heavy typeface. At the same time, it has a very large contrast between vertical and horizontal stems. This gives it a certain defiant and aggressive character. The name Anker means anchor in German. That is something very heavy in weight and at the same time has sharp and thin elements in the design. This is reflected in the Anker. Suitable for super large titles, short words, logos or typographic compositions.

Hypercreepos is a sweet and creepy hyper-bold font inspired by the horror comic books of the 60s. Handmade in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland) on lined A4 papers, the letter's shape is conscientiously designed to give a punchos impact on the reader. The unique and vibrant contours are drawn on an improvised backlit table inherited from Bisou's mother. Definitely contemporary, the overall feeling given off by Hypercreepos is profound and human, evoking the graphite smell of the comic's workshops. Exclusively made for titles, this impactos font will suite with delight the text of posters, signs of comics bookstore, gaming bar, horror movie theater or film festival. That said, the designer is not responsible for the use of Hypercreepos and wish it will serve beyond all expectation.

An unannotated photocopy tucked inside the leaves of an old lettering book yielded this unusual and exuberant Art Deco face. The caps feature a simple “bubbly” pattern that makes this offering pack a punch, not unlike the German cherry brandy for which it is named. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

An old brass stencil of the word 'large' was spotted for sale in an online auction. What set it apart from many other vintage stencil items was the beautiful, hand-punched Western letters with a diamond-shape center. Those five letters served as the basis for Old Chisholm JNL, which retains the look and hand-made charm of the original metal stencil.

Here’s another offering from the Baltimore Type Foundry, originally called Airport Tourist, which was obviously influenced by Paul Renner’s Futura Display, designed in 1932 for Bauersche Gießerei. This version features tight sidebearings and aggressive kerning, so your headlines will pack a punch. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

People might consider me a fool - they might even consider me a fool on the beach...because I take a swim in the ocean, even in the wintertime! Beach Fool is a simple but yet very strong headline font. It has its roots in both grafitti and comics, which makes it really powerful for graphical expressions that needs an extra punch!

In the late 90’s, there were many German cars coming into Malmö (where I lived at the time). I was blown away by the font on the license plates. So strange, so strong, peculiar – but still macho. I built the uppercase from my own photos. After this I completed the font with my own lowercase, small caps and punctuation.

Circle Sans is one of the most unique wood type font designs we"™ve found. It was made in Europe and our cut measures just 3 picas. Letters are a basic, rounded gothic with a medium amount of stroke contrast. This font is easy to read and packs a special punch dropped out from the negative space of a circle.

Elbow Grease was made with, yes, you’ve guessed it: Elbow Grease! It started off as a grungy font, but it didn’t look right, so I reworked all the glyphs. Then I forgot to save the font, so I had to start all over again. Naming a font was never this easy! Elbow Grease is a didone-ish font with some seriously warped glyphs, a lot of panache and a ‘get-it-done’ attitude. Also comes with a toolkit full of diacritics.

The source of inspiration for Klaver Monogram is a delightfully elegant initial letterset adorned with clover tipped flourishes from a vintage embroidery publication. Originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs and other linens, this digital revival opens it up to a whole new realm of possibilities. With electronics taking over virtually every aspect of manufacturing, packaging and shipping, it's almost difficult to envision a time when wooden crates were marked for identification by using brass stencils. Many of these stencils were hand-cut or manufactured with special punches that perforated the brass sheets with pre-formed letters and numbers. In Holland we eat pancakes with black syrup and I always thought that this ‘suikerstroop’ was the same as molasses. Turns out that’s not the case; syrup is made from sugar, but molasses is a by-product of the sugar refining industry. To celebrate the fact that I learned something new, I named this font family Black Molasses. Black Molasses was made using various cheap brushes and Chinese Ink. It comes in a ‘fat’ version and a ‘light’ version that work together really well.

This font is inspired by all those end-of-the-pier amusement arcades and fairground rides. It’s also a bit of a nod to comic book graphics of the Marvel era and the superheroes who deliver knockout punches in a spew of drop shadow typography. If you're old enough to remember having a lettering stencil in school, then you might have tried to save all of the waste paper punched out of the letters and numbers; hoping to do something with them later on. Jeff Levine took his Tramp Steamer JNL stencil font and gave it the look of those waste paper pieces - lined up to form erratic characters with a personality all their own.

Words in a blurry world want to be more firmly anchored in the line - this is the task of the Slab-serif, characterized by solid heels.
