Multicolored Fonts Many years ago, when Xerox Corporation still had its own font department, I came to Los Angeles in 1985 to train the IKARUS program. One day Bill Kienzel, head of the Xerox font department at the time, said we should go to the Hollywood Hills together; he knew people there who were experimenting with multicolored fonts. After a little wandering through the winding streets of the many hills, we reached a somewhat overgrown, simple family house standing under trees. A group of very inspired designers were waiting for us there. They immediately showed us the works they created using photomechanical tricks. They were fascinating. The American colors and the whole look seemed noble and enchanting. The problem was that this process was very difficult to implement and required a lot of effort on individual letters. They dreamed of a colored font that could be used for normal typesetting. We thought back and forth about how to save the individually colored letters in a common font, but soon gave up because we didn't see a technical option. So this idea and the memory of the time in Hollywood lay dormant in the back of my mind for many years, until at the beginning of this year 2023 I received an order to produce an outline typeface and the story came back to me. Suddenly I knew how to solve the problem from back then: if only the areas that should have the same color in all letters were saved in their own separate fonts, they could be colored independently of each other and later placed on top of each other. I implemented this in the 5 fonts that are now available with the 3 variants “Outside”, “Middle” and “Inside”. Together with the background, 4 colors can be combined with each other. This method works in text programs such as Word or InDesign. In Photoshop or Illustrator, the individual surfaces can also be colored by converting them into paths if the additional “Complete” variants (which contain all 3 contours) are used. There is also a “Basic” variant that can be used to achieve special effects such as overlay, bleed, etc. The first 5 fonts in this series are all based on the principle of contouring. Anyone who claims that you don't need any special fonts because they can be created automatically from any font using common programs is wrong or is only telling only half the truth. Anyone who has ever dealt with this knows that many individual adjustments to the design are necessary after contouring. This has happened in the 5 fonts that are now available and have very different styles. The dream from back then has come true. Made in Germany, Referenz Grotesk is a typeface full of references referring to the type design history of Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. Its typographic history holds a broad spectrum of shapes and characters, including F.H. Ernst Schneidler (1882–1956), Imre Reiner (1900–1987), Walter Brudi (1907–1987), Kurt Weidemann (1922–2011) and Frank Heine (1964–2003). During extensive research phases for Referenz Grotesk included collection and analysis. This led to further research in the Academy’s collection and archive where the majority of Weidemann’s estate is housed next to works of other designers and professors like F.H. Ernst Schneidler and Walter Brudi. Another place of research was the typesetting workshop where Schneidler had previously taught and worked. Some of his freshly cast fonts were tested and used there for the first time and are still stored in several of the type cases. Regarding the more recent history, for instance about the Emigre designer Frank Heine, former colleagues and professors have been consulted. These studies resulted in the new font Referenz Grotesk that includes traces of Kurt Weidemann’s Corporate as well as calligraphic hints that link to Schneidler’s Stuttgarter Schule (Stuttgart School) where writing played an important role during the form finding process. For the regular text fonts these features are integrated in a subtle manner whereas several alternative glyphs pick up more expressive forms. The final sans serif type family has a clarity and contemporary straightness that becomes more characteristic in its heavier weights. Additionally more than 60 alternative glyphs per weight allow for individual combinations that can be tailored specifically for each application and context. They open up a broad range of visual expressions, from subtle to playful and eccentric characteristics. Referenz Grotesk is available in six weights: Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, Extra Bold and Black, plus italics. Cal Roman Black is one more font from the PKG “Cal” (Calligraphic) group. This time for calligraphic sketches we used a wide brush instead of the iron pen. Instead of minuscule letters, there are Small Caps (which are almost the same weight as capitals). There was an intention to keep the spacing as small as possible, because of that, there is no obvious difference in the stroke thickness of the capitals and the lowercase capital letters. The difference in height is only one-third of the brush-width. Cal Roman Black font is rhythmic, informal, dark and hefty... romantic and strong at the same time (just like Ferdinand). I ran prints of the font, through a very bad copymachine, used a wet cloth to make the print look worn, scanned the prints and voila! Retrozoid, my very first Open Type font, was born! I’m a bit of a sucker for neon lights, especially in big cities. My favourite city is Tokyo, with its brightly coloured billboards and its back alleys full of neon-lit eateries. At first sight, Neon Goo is a slightly warped font, with some funny looking glyphs and a generous spacing. When you start using it, you’ll find out that the glyphs do complement each other! Neon Goo comes with all diacritics and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.
