Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. Stonetype is a typeface that was used by stonemasons in the 70s & 80s of the last century. When I was starting as a stonemason, these were the first characters I had to draw, by hand, back then on grave monuments and memorial plaques. The idea was born to digitize all the material, to be saved for eternity. By digitizing all and fine tuning, plus the addition of some main characters, Stonetype has now grown into a user-friendly typeface that can, now still, be used by stonemasons, to improve their creation process times. But Stonetype can also easily be used in modern and contemporary designs. Stonetype is the perfect fit for graphic design, editorial design, magazines, posters, logotypes, brands and corporate design. Stonetype is designed by Coert De Decker in 2019 and published by Kustomtype Font Foundry.

The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. According to Berthold Wolpe (‘Signatures’ No. 18), the punches were cut and shown in samples in 1776 by Isaac Moore, who came from Birmingham to Bristol.” – Jan Tschichold, “Meisterbuch der Schrift”, Notes On The Plates, Page 231 Publisher note: I wanted to improve the contrast between thick and thin, reduce some ink-traps and give stems, serifs and links a smoother overall feel. I have also added some alternative letters and old style numerals.

John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the United States, didn't hit his stride until he'd left that lofty office. It was during his many years in Congress that he assured his legacy, not least because of his long, masterful oratory opposing slavery. His speeches, in fact, won him the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." So when I decided to simulate Adams's penmanship in his legendary diary (which he kept for nearly 70 years), it seemed fitting to call the font by that name. I focused on his handwriting from about 1810, when he was Ambassador to Russia, but also consulted pages from later years. Old Man Eloquent has both regular and bold weights. The OpenType version has more than 450 glyphs, including alternate uppercase characters, old-style and lining figures, and numerous ligatures; all formats contain several common (English) words.

Dear Dolores has had its name from the latin word dolorem, meaning sorrow or grief. When I started working on this display font I found myself trying it out using the latin requiem texts. The capitals somehow sat well with the monumental and solemn words of mourning. The broken hairlines suggested stone cuttings where the fine details had been worn down and obliterated over time and it felt at home in a churchyard or in a monument park. Adding lowercase gave the font a more personal and friendly appearance and opened up new possibilities for use. The name itself is a fictional message to someone long missed or perhaps lost too soon. Dear Dolores comes in a cut and an uncut version where the fine details are left intact. Both are excellent for headlines or memorable quotes.

I've been working on a usable sans serif for body copy since the mid-1990s (though I certainly did not know it at the time). This one works well. It started life back in the mists of time as a scan of an old German font by Carl Fahrenwaldt. It was developed fully as a synergized serif with strong traditional roots and released as Bergsland Pro. Now it finally makes it to where I was headed all along as a sans text font. This is a well modulated humanist, sans serif font family with many OpenType features and over 600 characters: Caps, lower case, small caps, ligatures, swashes, small cap figures, old style figures, numerators, denominators, accents characters, ordinal numbers, and so on. It is designed for text use in body copy. But it also works very well for elegantly stylized display.

Dionisio, a CastleType original, takes its inspiration from one of the overlooked treasures of the CastleType library: Ransahoff. The latter is extremely condensed and very elegant. I particularly like its hairline slab serifs and cross-bars. I decided to use it as a starting point for a new design, but to make the proportions more classic and to make it more sensuous with gentler curves and bracketed cross-bar serifs. The result is very Bodoni-like, but less extreme and more contemporary looking. Meanwhile, Dionisio maintains a hint of Ransahoff with condensed letterforms and very fine serifs. Dionisio brings together the best of both, making it the perfect choice where a slender, sophisticated typeface is needed. Dionisio is available in two widths: normal and condensed, five fonts each. Includes an extensive character set and OpenType features.

James Paul is a versatile display font based on the designer's handwriting. The letterforms are legible even at small sizes. When set bigger, this bold script reveals hairline ink trails that add rhythm to its lively forms. James Paul contains alternate glyphs and ligatures.

A title card listing the supporting cast of the 1950 Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame drama “In a Lonely Place” provided the hand lettered slab serif type design that served as the model for Post Production JNL – available in both regular and oblique versions.

In 1912 Gerard Meynell, with J.H. Mason, Ernest Jackson and Edward Johnston, commissioned this large x-height typeface modelled on Caslon’s designs from Pierpont and the Monotype Corporation as the text face for The Imprint, a short-lived magazine about fine printing and typography.

The hand lettered title and credits for the 1937 film “Easy Living” (starring Jean Arthur and Edward Arnold) featured playful, casual Art Deco sans serif lettering. This became the working model for Nice and Easy JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

SK Kalender is a sans serif and mono weighted font. It was designed by Salih Kızılkaya in 2020. The name of the font comes from the word “kalender”, which means humble, unpretentious and simple living. SK Kalender has three different versions, regular, medium and bold.

Ralph M. Unger, known for his preference for blackletter designs, brought this beautiful blackletter variant back to life. Based on artwork from old catalogues, he redesigned, digitally remastered and completed the character set for this typeface. Breite Kanzlei cannot be avoided by blackletter lovers!

Katfish is the work of Michael Gills, a unique and inventive script font. Initial capitals are complemented by a lively lowercase and a number of alternative characters, ligatures and swash elements. Katfish has a fun, irregular style and includes charming cat, fish and dolphin illustrations.

The name ‘HARBER’ comes from the first letters drawn. It is a sans serif family designed of dots on a grid, that gives it this round and rhythmic aesthetic. Only dots grow, approaching or moving away, changing the aspect of letters but keeping its characteristics.

Devil Candle Variable is a dark variable typeface. Ideal for the bone-chilling narratives of horror movies, this typeface encompasses the raw essence of Halloween and satanic lore, effectively encapsulating the pulse of terror that courses through the veins of the enchanted and the damned.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Price Didone has inspired a full alphabetic font - Mastadoni, so if you're after more than numerals, head over there! Price Didone is a font with a singular purpose: The setting of elegant, stylish price tags. As such it is non-alphabetic, featuring instead numerals, a large array of currency symbols, and a smattering of typographic niceties such as quotes, brackets, pilcrow, daggers and a very curvaceous ampersand. Certain currency symbols that are not independent glyphs (Q, Ft, kr etc.) are included as their constituent letters, some of which also have automatic ligatures for that little something extra. There are currency symbols included which have not (yet) been accepted to unicode, such as the Russian Ruble and Bitcoin symbols. For ease of access, these can be typed using the standard ligatures feature. See features below for the full list. Features: Automatic Fractions - with fractions feature engaged, arbitrary fractions are a doddle. It also shrinks the dollar, sterling, and Euro symbols for a more authentic look. While intended for one sole purpose, Price Didone could nevertheless be quite versatile. Quote marks and typographic symbols can be used for decoration. Everybody loves a nice ampersand and this is one I'm really proud of. Or you might just want some pretty numbers for your house, or sports jersey, or just to stand out a little from the rest of your text. Whatever use you may have in mind, go for it. And do let me know if your currency symbol isn't included, and I'll quickly add it to the glyph set in future versions.
