  3. Mosquito by Monotype, $29.99
Éric de Berranger likes to multitask, and often works on two typeface families at once. Such was the case with Mosquito, a jaunty sans that was developed at the same time he was creating the more traditional Maxime. Mosquito represented a sort of recreation," says de Berranger. "When I grew tired of working on one design I could work on the other and then come back to the first, full of courage and desire!" Mosquito is built from simple, straightforward shapes, but its distinctive stroke terminals and slight oblique weight stress distinguish the design from more conventional sans serif faces. The relatively large x-height and open counters add to the legibility of the design. The capitals are straightforward (with just a hint of Peignot), while the lowercase has a softer, more inviting demeanor. "I drew Mosquito with the hope that it would be pleasant to look at and to read," says de Berranger. "I think the end result is almost feminine." Mosquito comes in three weights, with complementary italic designs and a suite of small caps, old style figures and alternate characters."
  4. Mosquito Formal by Monotype, $29.00
Mosquito Formal, by Éric de Berranger, takes the original jaunty design of Mosquito and dresses it in a tuxedo. The stressed character strokes, simple, straightforward shapes, relatively large x-height, open counters and hint of Peignot are still there, but the cursive strokes and lively terminals have been replaced with traditional designs. The result is a more serious-and more sophisticated typeface. The idea," says Éric de Berranger, "was to assuage the drawing of Mosquito. To 'calm' it; and eliminate its idiosyncrasies while preserving character structure and general appearance." Although still distinctive, as Éric de Berranger puts it, "Mosquito Formal is more to be read than seen, it is more invisible and thus, more readable than my earlier design." He does, however, use both typefaces in his graphic design projects: Mosquito for headlines and in applications where the lively design is appropriate, and Mosquito Formal for those instances that require a quieter more sophisticated look. Mosquito Formal is available in three weights with complementary italic designs in addition to a suite of small caps and old style figures. "

  15. Mislab Std by Typofonderie, $59.00
A brighter slab n’ sans in 18 styles Referred to as Egyptian’s in the early years of the nineteenth century, today slab serifs are primarily used in display sizes but seldom used in body text. With Mislab, Xavier Dupré has designed a brighter and more legible slab serif than most. Mislab aptly combines the strength of a slab serif with the lightness of a sans serif. Bold and thick serifs make for strong impact in display uses while performing extremely well under the most stressful body text conditions. A slight cursive feel adds spice to the text while its delicate rounded rectangular structure is naturally adapted to screen displays. The capitals have fully assumed serifs while the lowercases have more discreet versions. Notable features include sanserif endings on the lowercase a, c, e & s, inducing fluidity and enhanced readability. This highly versatile typeface brings clarity to headlines. Mislab will provide foolproof stability to your layouts. 16. Xpress Rounded by Wiescher Design, $12.00
»XPress-Rounded« is my new addition to »XPress«, my Sans-Serif that impresses – especially in small sizes – with its outstanding readability. »XPress-Rounded« looks very different, almost like a completely new font. But the rounded version has the same seven precisely calibrated weights from »Thin« to »Heavy« and its corresponding italics make this font-family universally usable. The »XPress« fonts got their bearings from the fabulous American »Gothic« fonts of the twenties of last century. Modern, present day elements, high lowercase letters and infinitesimal elegant slight curves in start- and end strokes make the font family not only great for body copy, but also very useful in advertising. Enjoy! Viel Erfolg!

  22. Berganza by Cuchi, qué tipo, $9.95
"Berganza" is a typeface designed as a tribute to the spanish century called "Siglo de Oro". Embellished with several ornaments and swashes, it quickly reminds an age in which castilian arts & letters were flourished, as well as the fantasy knighty fables adventures of heroes, loved ladies and evil villains. Although the Siglo de Oro cannot be set in specific dates, it is generally considered to have lasted more than a century; between 1492, the year of the discovery of America and 1681, the year in which the writer Pedro Calderón dela Barca died. Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo, or even William Shakespeare (in England) are also famous figures of this time. Berganza typeface takes its name from the main character of the picaresque novel "The Conversation of the Dogs" (Cervantes, 1613). Berganza is able to speak with the other dog Scipio on a big number of social & philosophical topics. Talking about technics, Berganza is a modern typeface but with a humanist flavour. Thanks to its various styles and flourishes, it immediately refers to the culteranism aesthetic of that time, whose aim was to elevate the noble over the vulgar. But also, Berganza takes advantage of the contemporary technology, highlighting in his drawing the contrasted forms and certain broken and unusual strokes in order to give it a brave and different style touch. Berganza includes four weights to be used for continuous reading with great visual richness. However, it is more recommended for large sizes, since its unusual and particular details appear when the letter grows. Finally, the hundreds of glyphs and Opentype features that it has incorporated, allow us to change the aesthetics of the type according to our needs.
