The Englishman William Caslon (1672-1766) first cut his typeface Caslon in 1725. His major influences were the Dutch designers Christoffel van Dijcks and Dirck Voskens. The Caslon font was long known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum, the Americans used it as well for their Declaration of Independence. The characteristics of the earlier Renaissance typefaces are only barely detectable. The serifs are finer and the axis of the curvature is almost or completely vertical. The overall impression which Caslon makes is serious, elegant and linear. Next to Baskerville, Caslon font is known as the embodiment of the English Baroque-Antiqua and has gone through numerous new interpretations, meaning that every Caslon is slightly different. ITC Caslon 224 was designed by Edward Benguiat and appeared with ITC in 1982. It is the text font which expanded upon the title font ITC Caslon 223. The alterations in the proportions of the letters make this Caslon 224 a noticeable departure from the original, but make the font overall more legible.

Storefront is what the prolific and talented American sign painters of the 1920s and 1930s would have created if they had access to the advanced lettering and type technologies we have today. Rooted in an incomplete Alf Becker alphabet sample, Storefront is my usual overdose on alternates and swashes, my eternal attempt at giving typesetting that ever-elusive handmade impression. Though the main shapes, especially the majuscules, are almost a standard recitation of the natural evolution of nineteenth century scripts, the additional variants available within the font provide a leap in time to what sign makers and packagers are doing today. I can honestly say that Storefront’s influences are probably less historic and more in line with my recent travels and frequent supermarket visits. It’s difficult to avoid current visual culture when you're constantly bombarded with it. Not that I try. I certainly welcome the overflow. I'm probably addicted to it by now. With a very cool aesthetic, plenty of alternates and swashes, extended Latin language support, Storefront is over a thousand glyphs for your branding, packaging, and sign making pleasure.

Those who design books for young children should consider the different needs of their readers. When laying out pages for young readers, particular care should be taken over word spacing. Don't forget that justifying short lines disrupts spacing. Justification should be used only when absolutely necessary. In the research undertaken with young readers the importance of consistent spacing was clear. It also appeared that the poorer readers profited from wider word spacing, while spacing that suited the poorest readers, positively annoyed the better readers. These typefaces have built-in letter spacing because of their exit strokes, as well as extra clarity designed into them. Sassoon Primary Medium Condensed is a compact style for headlines combining the right amount of weight, yet in a friendly style. When used at large sizes the friendliness of Sassoon types really shines. Why not use it for headings throughout a book. You can find many other new ways to use this typeface. The Greek font started from an experiment with designing fonts based on a geometric grid. I joined the points on the grid with straight lines to form the various characters and found that this resulted in a font that closely resembled Greek writing (derived from inscriptions carved in stone) of ancient times. I continued to develop this theme but I now accentuated the look and feel of Greek writing. The three styles shown are the results of this development. I did not kern or letterspace the individual letters since this would have been out of character with the orignal Greek writing. This means that the font is mono-spaced. At a later stage I may produce more refined and "modern" versions of these fonts. Surprisingly, the Greek SCF styles are very readable. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). In fact, it has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.

The Heinemann fonts were initially developed by the in-house design team at Heinemann educational publishing out of the necessity to find the perfect font for use in early primary reading books and literacy products. Basic Heinemann is defined by longer ascenders and descenders which help children to distinguish between letters; rounded edges on all letterforms help focus the reader on the individual letter shape; and modified characters (eg. a, g,) ensure instant recognition of letterforms. Heinemann Special offers further modified characters and kerning pairs ideal for dyslexic or special needs use (eg a, d, b). The Heinemann fonts were developed in partnership with children, literacy advisors, teachers of special needs/dyslexia and primary school teachers, and are now released in response to hundreds of requests from publishers, designers and teachers to purchase them. They have been trialled in schools and learning institutions over an 8 year period, and are a favorite for use in both print and electronic product. Gerard Unger developed this newspaper font between 1984 and 1987 for Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Hell GmbH, Kiel. He was mainly influenced by William A. Dwiggins (1880-1956), the typographic consultant of Mergenthaler Linotype, who started to develop more legible, alternative fonts for newspaper printing as early as 1930. Swift was named after the fast flying bird. Austere and concise, firm and original, Swift is suited for almost any purpose. Swift has been specially developed to sustain a maximum of quality and readability when used in unfavorable print and display processes, e.g. newspapers, laser printing and low resolution screens. Its robust, yet elegant serifs and its large x-height provide an undeniable distinction to the typeface, making it suitable for corporate ID and advertising purposes as well. Swift 2.0 family was designed in 1995. It's an improved version with technical and aesthetic enhancements and new family members. The Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2003 by Tagir Safayev. D Sert—based on the Pirata typeface—is inspired by 70s Chilean constructivist design and the political propaganda posters artwork of La Unidad Popular (Chilean political coalition). D Sert is the result of the combination of the Chilean graphic art revival with new trends, such as the handmade movement and super font families. The super family comprises 47 weights and comes with two versions: D Sert and D Sert Alt, plus extras. Diagonal strokes are significantly different between the two versions: diagonals of the Alt version are much more logical than the diagonals of the normal version. Another difference is the bowls of the capitals: in the D Sert version, they slightly project above the cap height, making it a more daring version and bringing it closer to calligraphy; contrarily, in the Alt version, bowls do not project above the cap height, which makes it a more tidy font. Plantin is a Renaissance Roman as seen through a late–industrial-revolution paradigm. Its forms aim to celebrate fine sixteenth century book typography with the requirements of mechanized typesetting and mass production in mind. How did this anomalous design come about? In 1912 Frank Hinman Pierpont of English Monotype visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, returning home with “knowledge, hundreds of photographs, and a stack of antique typeset specimens including a few examples of Robert Granjon’s.” Together with Fritz Stelzer of the Monotype Drawing Office, Pierpont took one of these overinked proofs taken from worn type to use as the basis of a new text face for machine composition. Body text set in Plantin produces a dark, rich texture that’s suited to editorial and book work, though it also performs its tasks on screen with ease. Its historical roots lend the message it sets a sense of gravity and authenticity. The family covers four text weights complete with italics, with four condensed headline styles and a caps-only titling cut. Abdo Rajab is the second version of the font FS Rajab which was designed by the type designer Abdulsamiea Rajab Salem for Future Soft company fonts. It is a leading company in Arabization field and producing the Arabic and Islamic programs beside the children programs. This font appeared between 1998 and 2000. In this version there were a lot of adjustments to keep the font in its spirit and uniformity between the various characters. Also added some new characters, which gave him another beautiful addition to be used in both title and text designs. Three weights (Regular, light and bold) have been created. Then the font was converted to OpenType to support Arabic, Persian and Urdu to be compatible with the various operation systems and modern software. The combination of modern Kufi and Naskh styles and varying between straight and curved parts made it a beautiful typeface appropriate to the titles and text, and able to meet the desire of the user in the design of ads and modern designs of various types of audio and visual.

Aeroport is a new typeface in the spirit of both German geometric sans serifs and Swiss neogrotesques. Its deliberately wide proportions and relatively short capitals account for the excellent way the type carries the line. Its short ascenders and descenders allow for very tight leading. When used in large point sizes, Aeroport reveals its industrial ancestry and its unconventional design: the somewhat unbalanced top of the lowercase a, the capital B that has deliberately not been compensated optically, the overly wide capital M. In smaller sizes the type creates a starkly different effect: its measured widths and low contrast make a text setting appear neutral and homogenous. This versatility is what makes Aeroport a multipurpose sans serif suitable for a wide variety of typographic applications. The family includes four weights with their italics and a monospased style. Character set includes an alternate lowercase a, two sets of figures and currency symbols, uppercase punctuation, and a set of arrows. Sam Suliman is a condensed display face supplied in three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold – plus a set of handy italics (obliques). All six fonts are included in the value family pack. The fonts are inspired by lowercase lettering on a Sarah Vaughan album cover designed by Sam Suliman in 1962, a style which contrasts sharp tight outer corners with soft rounded counters. The letters were perhaps influenced by a Solotype font called Herald Square, but without that font’s aversion to diagonals, and adding distinctive perky ascenders/descenders on the lowercase r, a, u, g and n. The Sam Suliman fonts also add the nubs to d, m, p, and q. Suliman was born in Manchester, England in 1927. After working for McCann Erikson in London, he moved to New York where he took on freelance work designing album covers, particularly celebrated are his striking minimalist designs for jazz records. He moved back to England in the early 1960s, designing many book jackets, film titles and fabrics, also working in Spain and India before settling in Oxford in the 1980s.

Astrum is a very decorative script font using elegant caligraphic handwritten letters that are all mutually interconnected, creating a unique look & feel of a personalized human handwritting. Its clean and prefined lines makes Astrum very appealing and modern, although being very classical in its core essence. The idea for the creation of this font had originally came up from the need to create a beautiful design for Weddings, wedding occasions, etc., but none of the existing fonts were satisfactory - so I decided to create a new and unique typeface to fill this need. Letters and other characters are recognizeable by prefined ornaments, incorporated in a very subtle way. Whitespace between capital letters, lower-case letters, numbers and other characters are done in a way to minimize the need for kerning. The font Astrum, besides being a celebration of class and exclusivity, is a very luxurious and elegant handwritten font perfectly suited for Wedding cards. Philip Bouwsma's Symposium Pro is a wide Carolingian script that can be set simply or with a wide range of flourishes. It takes its inspiration from the scriptoria of the twelfth century, particularly in Spain, where Christians, Muslims and Jews lived harmoniously in a brilliant culture for two centuries. As manuscripts were translated and copied to meet the Western demand for classical texts, calligraphic elements from Arabic and Hebrew spread throughout Europe, sparking a proliferation of new styles that brought the simple book hand to a higher level. Symposium Pro spans a broad range of time and space, from the court of Charlemagne to the Arabian nights and Renaissance Florence. The design of Futura seems to be timeless. This typeface family which had been developed in 1926 by Paul Renner for the Bauer Type Foundry in the style of constructivism and as part of the Bauhaus movement, experienced, however, in the course of the past 90 years, repeated time-appropriate revivals which guaranteed its on-going popularity. The version of the Futura EF Pro contains the original character constructions which Dennis Megaw described as the “first designs of Futura” in 1938 in “20th century sans serif types, Typography no. 7” (See: Dr. Christopher Burke: Paul Renner, Princeton Architectural Press, New York 1998). What makes it exceptional is the extension into three weights: “Text”, “Headline” and “Index” which came about as part of a degree dissertation at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HFBK) in Hamburg. In this context, the accompanying documentation “Die Kritik der reinen Futura” (“The Critique of the Pure Futura”) by Katharina Strauer was published by the Materialverlag, Hamburg, in 2003. Some copies are still available at Elsner+Flake.
