A playful handwriting of a child Twelve-year old Tobias Düsel designed the characters of this font in 2002 during his family’s furlough in the USA. He drew the alphabet freehand in pencil on a piece of stationery, and clearly had examples of the well-known college and military fonts in mind. The characters in their basic form are geometrically thought out, as well as the construction of the shadows. But remarkably, while drawing, Tobias Düsel did not reach for the obvious aid of a ruler. In fact, the strokes of the letters are not linear, rather are recognizably well-balanced with declining and increasing straights as can be seen in polished classical fonts. Originally this font consists only of upper case letters — all other characters (punctuation marks, figures and similar) have been modified from the components of the capital letters. Complementary to the original Outline-Shadow-Version TobyFont Empty, the variations TobyFont Inside and TobyFont Full are also available. ”Empty“ is, so to speak, the frame of the typeface as “Inside” is the filling, and “Full” is the sum of both. All three versions have the exact same body size so that they can be placed over one another congruently. In this way the effect of a font in two or three colors can be attained. TobyFont is excellently suitable for designing “picturesque” or “hand-carved” contents; large weights are especially charming and striking.

P22 Brass Script is a new font from an old source. This script font was discovered in a booklet from Dornemann & Co. of Magdeburg Germany, circa 1910. The book was titled Messingschriften fur Handvergoldung, which roughly translates to “Brass types for hand foil stamping.” The mini catalog called this type simply “Script.” It has not been previously digitized or seen in standard metal type form. The antique specimen book featured most of the characters needed for a full alphabet, but a number of letters were not shown. Since no other examples of this style could be found, P22 enlisted the assistance of master calligrapher Michael Clark to draw the missing characters in the same style as the original. The style is very loosely based on the secretarial hands and reminiscent of “French Hand” with a very early 20th century, pre-modern feel. It has an unusual flow that is neither too casual nor too formal. The font would be useful for wedding invitations or packaging and advertising. P22 Brass Script Pro features include: automatic ligatures for common pairs such as ll, tt, qu and a variety of f ligatures, full CE language support including Turkish and Romanian and a variety of swash underscores for different length words that can be added manually in OpenType ready applications with the glyph palette or with the contextual alternates. The Mule is a very special mix – it has a donkey father and horse mother, and they often inherit the best qualities of both. "The mule is an example of hybrid vigor, Charles Darwin wrote: The mule always appears to me a most surprising animal. That a hybrid should possess more reason, memory, obstinacy, social affection, powers of muscular endurance, and length of life, than either of its parents, seems to indicate that art has here outdone nature." They are typically very strong for their size compared to horses and are able to cope with bad weather better than donkeys. Mules rarely become ill and their behavior is Intelligent and sensitive. In the right home, they can make great companions for other equines, and wonderful pets. However, if they are unhandled or not correctly trained, mules have the potential to be dangerous. The inner shapes of Mule Cargo are almost identical between the Regular and the Heavy weight. This shared genom make them very powerful pair and a useful design tool for display purposes.

D Sert—based on the Pirata typeface—is inspired by 70s Chilean constructivist design and the political propaganda posters artwork of La Unidad Popular (Chilean political coalition). D Sert is the result of the combination of the Chilean graphic art revival with new trends, such as the handmade movement and super font families. The super family comprises 47 weights and comes with two versions: D Sert and D Sert Alt, plus extras. Diagonal strokes are significantly different between the two versions: diagonals of the Alt version are much more logical than the diagonals of the normal version. Another difference is the bowls of the capitals: in the D Sert version, they slightly project above the cap height, making it a more daring version and bringing it closer to calligraphy; contrarily, in the Alt version, bowls do not project above the cap height, which makes it a more tidy font. This way, the combination of the two versions and extras provides the user with the freedom to create any kind of artwork.

Silk Script is a revival and elaborate expansion of a 1956 Helmut Matheis script called Primadonna, which strangely remained a metal face and never made the leap into the film age. Silk Script has the unmistakable high contrast and elegance of formal scripts, yet both its majuscules and minuscules show much more complex and visually appealing art than traditional copperplate or Spencerian calligraphy. When set properly, it adds just the needed extra touch of artistic flair to designs that are not visually satisfying with the usual high-contrast elegant scripts. There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel. Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre. The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate. After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling… Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Sporting pot-hook serifs and a tiny aperture, the Scotch Modern was an evolution of the Didone and Scotch Roman classifications, becoming the default type genre of the 19th century. Recontextualizing the 10-point type of a scientific report published in 1873, Nick Shinn has produced sleekly refined, micro-detailed vector drawings by eye, without the assistance of scans, of this magnificent classic. A beautiful genre of type, so popular in books, magazines and advertisements during the Victorian era and much of the 20th century, the Scotch Modern was derided by advocates of both the Arts & Crafts movement and 20th century modernists, and was never been properly adapted to hot metal, phototype, or digital media -- until now.
