Cartier was Canada’s first roman text typeface, created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial. Its designer, Carl Dair, was one of the country’s most celebrated graphic design pioneers, and a fine designer indeed — but he was not a trained type designer. He had spent a year at the Enschedé type foundry and printing works in the Netherlands, but that probably wasn’t enough to fully grasp all that was required to make an effective text face. It is also possible that Dair simply compromised his own design by not allowing any of the much needed alterations to be made to his working drawings when they were handed over to Linotype for production. Hey guys! Meet our new font "Luxe Atelier" which is inspired by a bit quirky but still lovely handwriting. When we launched our font "Lolita" in 2019 many liked the way we replaced some uppercase letters with lowercase ones. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The feedback we received inspired us to refine the idea of the lowercase signature style and we created "Luxe Atelier" with a lot more lowercase letters that give an uppercase look. However, some uppercase letters simply cannot be written as lowercase due to their nature: they would just lose their primary sound. For example, when we tried writing lowercase 'e' in the uppercase style it more resembled lowercase 'l' and affected the legibility of the font. Therefore some letters in this font remained as is. When it comes to other letters, we tried maximally to keep the lowercase style. This playful, non-standard signature font with slightly rough edges includes 37 ligatures which will definitely add realistic handwritten character to your designs. It is perfect for branding, signatures, weddings and so much more.

Diaria started as a project in Typeface Architecture for Master in Advanced Typograghy at EINA, Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona, a course tutored by Laura Meseguer and Íñigo Jerez Quintana. The lettering found on an 1878 Salt Lake City advertisement for the Forepaugh’s Circus inspired Faux Pas JNL, which is a bit of a pun on the circus’ name and also a commentary on how this unusual lettering style seems to break all of the rules on stroke width and balance. According to Wikipedia: “Adam John Forepaugh (February 28, 1831 - January 22, 1890) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, and circus owner. Forepaugh owned and operated a circus from 1865 through 1890 under various names including Forepaugh's Circus, The Great Forepaugh Show, The Adam Forepaugh Circus, and Forepaugh & The Wild West. In 1889, Forepaugh sold his circus acts to James Anthony Bailey and James E. Cooper and he sold his railroad cars to the Ringling Brothers. The Ringlings used the equipment to transform their circus from a small animal-powered production to a huge rail-powered behemoth, which later purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Thus, in liquidating his circus assets, he indirectly contributed to the demise of his arch-rival.” Faux Pas JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Pepperwood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly. These artists also created the typefaces Rosewood, Zebrawood and Ponderosa together and as the names suggest, all of these typefaces are so-called wood types. The origins of this kind of typeface can be found in the early 19th century. Called Italian or Italienne, these typefaces quickly became very popular. They are distinguished by square serifs whose width is larger than the stroke width of the characters. When the letters are set together, the heavy serifs build dark horizontal bands. Pepperwood font has a couple of unique characteristics of its own. Small squares decorate the middle of the letters and the edges of the serifs are not straight, rather, they have small, fine tips. In Northern Sumatra, the crystal clear waters of Lake Toba lap gently against the surrounding mountains. In the middle of the lake sits the island of Samosir, for centuries the secluded home of the Batak people. Visitors arrive by ferry into the tiny town of Tuk Tuk, escaping the heat and humidity of the Sumatran jungle. Throughout the village, restaurants and guest houses are adorned with hand-painted signs in bright colors. Perhaps due to Sumatra's long history of European colonization, the letterforms are reminiscent of those used for posters and handbills in America and Europe at the end of the 19th century, but with a distinctly Southeast Asian flavor. Charles Nix, intrigued by the combination of Victorian fancy and Batak arabesque, photographed, sketched and translated the letterforms into a design that is now ITC Batak. Named for the proud ancestors of Samosir's inhabitants, it is a bold condensed letter with hexagonal serifs - a sort of properly dressed grotesque.
