A 1918 lettering instruction book by William Hugh Gordon presented a number of lettering styles that were geared toward sign and show card painters along with tips and tricks regarding the correct construction of such signs for maximum effect. One pen lettered Roman alphabet with a beautiful set of numerals has been recreated digitally as Pen Elegant JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. To note, Gordon was the co-inventor of the Speedball lettering pen with Ross F. George in 1915.

The box cover of “Drawing Stencils No. 3 for Use on Slate or Paper” [a children’s drawing set produced by Montgomery, Ward & Company of Chicago circa the 1890s] had its title in an elegant spurred Roman type face. Working from the few letters available, a complete character set was created that resulted in Antique Packaging JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. To note, this is the 1500th font release from Jeff Levine Fonts since its inception in January of 2006.

This handwritten font was brought to our attention by one of our customers. Tom Bernard Anyz had offered his handwriting font at dafont.com, a free-font portal for private customers where Toms Handwritten is enjoying great popularity. We liked the design at first glance – it is so innocent and sketch-like, similar to a quick note or message. We reworked and completed Toms Handwritten for professional usage. Apart from the already available Latin character set for West and East, we also added Greek and Cyrillic.

Vitrines is a digital and extended version of a charming alphabet featured in a 1913 book devoted to window signs and show cards. This version was carefully developed to preserve the original hand lettered look and feel. It includes a bold weight and a set of pattern tiles to adorn your compositions. A note about the pattern font: in order to create even patterns, be sure to set the line spacing the same size as the font and set no spaces before or after paragraphs.

Blackthorn draws on the tradition of Art Nouveau font design with some elements of western or circus style fonts, but an overall effect which may have more in common with the psychedelic era than anything else. It has a feel somewhat akin to some of the lettering of Alphons Mucha particularly the Abaddon and Gehenna fonts. It's very stylized and kind of wicked looking. You can see where the name comes from if you note the thorn-like spurs on the upper part of each character.

The astype series Accolades B offers the advanced designer a fine set of calligraphic swashes, swirls and figural ornaments. Accolades B and B2 share most of the base set of ornaments but differ in some of the major shapes. If you're looking for some good companion fonts, give Gracia and Adana a try. P22 Tuscan Expanded is a digitization of the mid-19th Century Woodtype font "Antique Tuscan Expanded - Wells & Webb 1854". Specimens of this font are rarely, if ever, seen with a lower case. It is noted in the book American Wood Type 1828-1900 by Rob Roy Kelly that the lower case is "missing". This version was digitized from a recently discovered full set including all lower case plus ff ligatures. One unique feature of this design is the heart shape formed in the V, X & Y.

Hanna has its roots in the Plato and Cilantro fonts published earlier by Wilton Foundry. It is an informal roman and very legible at any size - a rare combination for many applications. Hanna was specifically designed to generate additional income for an orphanage in Ethiopia. Hanna Teshome runs an orphanage of roughly 140 children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is an amazing lady with a deep passion for orphan kids as well as innocent kids that find themselves in jail because their mothers have been imprisoned - they are treated as prisoners and are typically sexually abused - it is not uncommon for them to commit suicide when they are released from jail at age 18. Most of the orphans end up with Hanna because one or both of their parents have died from AIDS. Hanna relies entirely on donations to keep her orphanage running and this font is a small but tangible way for you to help make a difference in the lives of the orphan kids. I am committed to helping Hanna after visiting the orphanage several times and seeing the jails from where the kids have been rescued. Hanna is my hero because she stepped out of her comfort zone, with no financial support, to take care of the kids. My hope is that you will use this font as a messenger of good. Handbill JNL takes the type design from Broadletter JNL and gives it an open drop shadow treatment to emulate a popular style of many wooden typefaces from the 1800s.

Direkta JNL take the classic Art Deco influenced lettering of the 30s and 40s and adds a diagonal triangular cut into the letters, creating an air of forward movement.

Absinthe explores forms based on a truncated ellipse and eschews straight lines to give an entirely modern take on some of the forms more closely associated with Art Nouveau.

Joachim Müller-Lancé's Uppercut is a rather sporting fellow, originally developed for the Krav Maga training center of San Francisco (Krav Maga is a simple and efficient self-defense system that has become equally popular in Hollywood and with law enforcement). Joachim has spent several years training, hitting things and people whenever he needs a break from kerning. Uppercut can be seen on the school's t-shirts and other articles. Despite bearing the same moniker as an upwards punch to the chin, the name actually fell together quite naturally as Uppercut is an all uppercase typeface, and the word "cut" is also historically used to describe a type style in hot metal type. For this slanted look, "Angle" felt just right (with thanks to Mia McHatton). The design idea sprang from pencil sketches for the center's new identity. Uppercut's shapes are not calligraphic or handwritten, more like lettering seen in comics or sports logos. Its brush movements are imaginary, not too literally brushy. During development, details were simplified and reduced until a bit of a cut-paper feel emerged, but more fluid like writing. The shapes are economical and efficient; simplicity makes the font versatile, holding up in small as well as big sizes. Uppercut is decidedly analog, muscular but not bulky, with the fluid but determined movements of a boxer or martial artist - not theatrical but powerful, fast, confident and dynamic. Well... it has punch. In the proportions, there is emphasis on a strong upper edge "keeping its guard up", while several stems protrude downward, giving the impression of leaping or being "light on the feet". Use Uppercut to pick up the pace, add snap, verve and drive - on movie posters for action and adventure, to advertise your dojo, rumble or prizefight, racing team or tuning shop, or invite friends to your barbecue with old time rock'n'roll and homemade hot pepper sauce.

I am (trying to) learn Danish using an app on my phone. The grammar and vocabulary are not that difficult, as the Danish language is very close to the Dutch language. The pronunciation, however, is quite tricky. Words look simple when written down, but when pronounced, they sound very different. Take ‘pige’ (‘girl’) - it reads ‘pee-guh’, right? Well, it is pronounced ‘pee-uh’. Or how about ‘brød’ (meaning bread)? If you keep in mind that the o-slash is pronounced as the ‘i’ in bird - almost like ‘uh’, it should be br-uh-d, right? Wrong again. It is pronounced br-uh-l. Aaargghh! I will succeed, hopefully! Utroligt is a Danish word meaning ‘incredible’. It is a nice, uncomplicated all caps font. I made it with a cheap rollerball pen and some nice French paper. Comes with double letter ligatures and all the diacritics you’d like - including the danish ones.

A title font that looks better as larger the font size. First of all, it is designed for use in the upper-case format. Feature style: futurism, space, modernism, glyph variety (uniqueness (minimum automatic generation)). A kind of „s‟ in the lower-case format sets the tone and emphasizes the character, formed in the Prime Numbers Nebula — they determined its appearance, and influenced the style as a whole. Particular attention is paid to the kern: the kern table is formed manually, taking into account absolutely all the glyphs included in the font-family. Two types of stress (grave, acute) for all letter glyphs. The font contains basic Latin and several additional tables, as well as three types of quotation marks, a non-breaking space and a hyphen, a short, medium, and long dash. For a set of mathematical expressions there are centrifugal signs: equal, minus (not a hyphen or minus-hyphen), plus, multiplication (X-shaped and dot), plus-minus, division. The font was made for 3 years.
