While Student Council JNL was not influenced by any school activities, the design is based on a lithographed cardboard sign (circa 1930s) for Spizz Sparkling Water, a bottled seltzer from the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company of Lexington, Kentucky. A squared letterform with angled semi-serifs, this Art Deco typeface grabs attention. Student Council JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Arazatí was inspired by Edward Johnston’s typefaces, although its design is not based on a literal reconstruction. It has 48 variants of 422 glyphs each. In addition, it offers two monospaced variants for free. Arazatí is the name of the place where Johnston was born in 1872, located in San José, Uruguay. This typeface is a tribute to his birthplace.

Xtencil is a typeface inspired by the shapes of the drawing templates letters, based on the letter forms from my teacher Milton Glaser who at the same time was influenced by the modernism of Paul Renner. Xtencil is a round letter to create funny signs, ideal for posters and headlines. Xtencil not come as a drawing template, but as OpenType typography.

Miller, designed by Matthew Carter, is a “Scotch Roman,” a class of sturdy, general purpose types of Scottish origin, widely used in the US in the last century, but neglected since & overdue for revival. Miller is faithful to the Scotch style though not to any one historical example — and authentic in having both roman & italic small caps, a feature of the originals.

Stradivarius, sometimes known as Symphonie was designed by Hungarian born Imre Reiner (1900-1987). Reiner was not only a type designer, he was a fine artist. He enjoyed sculpture, painting, graphic and industrial design. In 1921, F. H. Ernst Schneidler, (Schneidler Initials) introduced Reiner to type design. Stradivarius was designed and first released by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1938.

I like the expression ‘being on tenterhooks’. Not that I’m on tenterhooks very often! Tenterhooks was made with a broken satay skewer (see poster 2 for the actual thing) and Chinese ink. It came out rather rough, but it does have a nice flow and a certain ‘wild elegance’. Comes with double letter ligatures and a whole bunch of diacritics.

Watchmaker was designed with the limitations imposed by a simple LCD that is meant only to display numbers. Most LCD typefaces use some diagonals to make the letters look better. This one does not and from it you can see why a few diagonals are needed to display letters on a LCD. Watchmaker is monospaced and comes in plain and bold weights.

Candelivers is a fun and display typeface, for better use in short sentences, or letterings and logo designs. It comes with a several features, like swashes, alternates and ligatures. It has a little not simmetry between the characters that gives a personality and handmade touch. A Glow version is also available to give more soft and fun personality. I hope you enjoy it!

Luscombe is a boisterous and lively display face, recalling the shaded and outlined faced much beloved of 1920s poster and advertising artists, while offering a regularity of outline that those faces often did not achieve. The 1920s were part of an era in songwriting where snappy wordplay and clever (if not long) titles prevailed. The lettering on one such piece of sheet music with the song title "In A Shady Nook by A Babbling Brook" offered up a bold, condensed sans serif design which is now available digitally as Brookside JNL. Available in both regular and oblique versions.

Trisquare is an Experimental Display Typeface, which is inspired by the strokes of the Fraktur alphabet but developed through the composition of triangular and square shapes. It has a particular ancient soul with a digital taste but is not monospaced. Trisquare is good to use for Branding, Signage, Packaging, Advertising, Headlines, Magazines, Book titles, or everything you want to use it for.

Character Sans is a detail full sans serif typeface in 5 styles. It features all european languages, ligatures, arrows and minuscule numbers. It's characteristic style features are straightened ends and sharp curves. The lighter weights have great white spaces and their width is orientated on the heavier weights. Character Sans was made to have style and not to be uniform.

Ornata C is the third of a series of old ornaments that I am trying to save from oblivion. I am not just scanning these, I am completely redesigning the ornaments from scratch, thereby eliminating imperfections. These ornaments have been first designed by a designer named Ben Sussan. Creating Halla was a bit unusual for me since I started out creating the italic version first and that inspired the name Halla, meaning to tilt in Icelandic. It is also a fairly common female name in Iceland. “Halla” is derived from old Norse word “hallr” = 'flat stone, rock' or 'sloping, leaning to one side' Halla is a true italic inspired by handwriting and mechanical type. The combination of Light and Italic makes Halla ideal for advertising, branding, signage, packaging and editorial design.

Eldridge is reminiscent of the sort of clear functional slab serif that was often to be seen in the 19th century. It is the plainer cousin of our Bamberforth family and the two partner together very well—Bamberforth for the eye-catching headines and Eldridge for the essential support. It is another new face, which harks straight back to Victorian times and, as such, is ideal for giving anything a 19th century feel-especially posters, book headings, dust jackets and invitations.

Passport48 exclusively in otf. opentype format, originally debuted in 1997 as Passport, close to the beginning of the indie typographer boom. Almost 25 years have passed since it was introduced at MyFonts as PS1 and later in 2003 in TT TrueType.** It was designed by Joseph Coniglio of Coniglio Type as a revival. Historically, Passport was digitized from a shiny black enamel 1948 Royal Silent Deluxe portable. Blubber Kitty had been quietly curled up in Phil Garnham’s sketchbook for a year before he brought it out to be brushed up. “It was in the mix as a basic form when I started thinking about FS Lola. It was a twisted, bubbly beauty – quite squishable and huggable. The working file was called Blubber. “At that time it was a basic construction of strokes. I created the ‘A’ first, purely as a shape to play with, not as type. I flipped it for ‘V’, and copied that for a ‘W’. I flipped the ‘W’ for an ‘M’... I thought, ‘This looks a bit wacky, but I like it,’ and just carried on. The most tricky characters were the ‘B’ ‘P’ and ‘R’. A comprehensive set of initials (usually referred to as Uncials, Lombardic Initials, or Lombards) of the Germanic variety, designed after Henric Pieterszoon’s “Gothise Monnikke Letteren” as appearing in Enschedé, J. (1768), Proef van Letteren, Haarlem (p. 120); also mentioned as “Great Primer Uncials” and "2-line Brevier Uncials" in Vervliet, H.D.L. (1968), Sixteenth-Century Printing Types of the Low Countries, Amsterdam: Hertzberger (pp. 54-55, and 212-213). The font contains over one hundred glyphs, including as a bonus six layered plus two plain ornamental initials adapted from the Gutenberg Bible (Mainz, ca. 1455) and the Mainz Psalter (Mainz, 1457). In January of 2006, Jeff Levine fonts debuted with ten releases. Many of those first fonts were based on vintage lettering stencils, which were the "school years" catalyst for Jeff's interest in lettering and type design. Eight years later, his collection of fonts has become a giant catalog of display type ranging from Wood Type revivals to Art Nouveau, Art Deco to stencil, reinterpretations of old favorites, experimental fonts, dingbat fonts and typefaces reflecting a particular decade's styles of cultural popularity. Designs from old lettering books, type catalogs and advertising have also been fodder for many alphabets not previously available in a digital format. Along the way, many unusual lettering sources were also mined for type ideas. Vintage packaging, hand-lettered signage, sign making kits, rubber stamp type, water applied decals and at times just a singular letter example inspired many of the releases within this collection. It was a source of pride for Jeff Levine Fonts to reach 500 releases and a determined goal to grow the type library as far as possible. OBO Star is a fat, subtly flared display typeface with a not so subtle groove factor. The letters are based on a square and do not have ascenders or descenders. This way the typeface can be used for horizontal and vertical settings, or mixed like crosswords. There are a few exceptions for certain punctuation and special characters that are half the width for better spacing; and the word space’s width can easily be adjusted through OpenType stylistic sets. Talking about spacing, for strictly horizontal typesetting there is the option to turn on kerning for a number of characters to create a more optimal texture across words and phrases. But that’s all just technical talk. The true character of OBO Star is the funky look, amplified by the wide 1x1 format that creates space for unconventional shapes, mostly pronounced in the letters R, K and G.

Chapman is the result of spending too many hours staring at the often all-capital engraver typefaces from long-gone foundries. The wide serifs, high contrast, and various widths seem to have so much character but also remain so neutral. From these references, Chapman began to emerge. It seemed natural that the lowercase would be based on a Scotch Roman model, much like the original all-capital faces. Chapman does not pull directly from any one source but from the genres themselves. It was, from the beginning, the goal to create a typeface that would be relatively neutral but not boring; an adaptable solution that works anywhere and, depending on the chosen width, can be squeezed or stretched to fit anywhere. The idiosyncrasies of the original designs are tamed in some places and turned up in others. The result is something familiar but unique and contemporary.
