Mark Stanczyk designed Linotype Typo American in 1999. The font is an excellent revival of American style typewriter type. As most of us can remember from our childhood years, or through old stories and movies, everyone used to type with typewriters before the invention of computers. Unlike computers, most individual typewriters only had one typestyle, or font, to chose from. To make matters worse, the letters in a typewriter font would wear down with use. Over time, text typed out on a typewriter would look more and more corroded, old, and uneven. Stanczyk has captured exactly these features in this “revival” font! Also like most older typewriter styles, Linotype Typo American’s letters are all mono-spaced, i.e., the letter i is the same width as the letter w. Typewriter letters also all tended to be cast in the same size, around 12 points or so. When using typewriter-style fonts, it is best to keep setting your text in similar sizes. (Of course, you can set really large and fun headlines with Linotype Typo American, too; if anything the unevenness of the design will come even more across in these applications.)

Tsotsi, a recent addition to the Scholtz Fonts range, is highly legible, strong, African and contemporary in design. It is a sans serif font, however, the gently splayed terminals to the strokes subtly hint at a serif. It has been designed to be easy on the eye and readable at all font sizes and can be used either as a body (text) font or in headings and larger scale design. The font has an irreverent insouciance which is suggested by the verticals which all vary from true perpendicular by a few degrees, and by the slightly top-heavy nature of all characters - hence the name "Tsotsi" -- a rascal who is very sure of himself (and a little big-headed). Above all, however, the Tsotsi (both the font and the person) has an appealingly cheeky and mischievous style. It includes characters for English, French, Italian, German, and Portugese. all upper and lower case letters, all special characters as well as all numerals and punctuation. The numerals are mono-spaced so that they will line up correctly in columns of figures. The letters of the alphabet are correctly kerned so that they appear correctly in text.

This font began its life as a project to design a T-shirt for a student group on a large midwestern university. It has now grown up into a unicode font, including Greek and Cyrillic. It has that look and feel of the T-shirts that are ubiquitous on the campuses of colleges and universities over the world. It would make an ideal tool for designing them, as well as posters and banners. Characters in these fonts include Latin, for English and other European languages; small a and c for names like MacDonald; many fractions, including 0/3 needed in baseball; Latin with diacritical marks for Eastern and Western European, Turkish, and Baltic languages; thorn, eth, cedilla, AE, OE, and sharp S for French, German, Icelandic; Latin extensions for clicks of some African languages; Greek (with tonos); Cyrillic for Russian and many other Slavic and Asian languages that use it; most Runes (the full Futhark plus a few more); six-point Brialle; currency symbols for dollar, cent, pound, yen, euro; and a few other extras like the peace sign. “Chalkís” or “Chalkida” was the capital of the Euboea island in old Greece. The name derived from the Greek and it means copper - bronze. Colonist from this area founded several important cities in the Magna Graecia, such as Cumae (coastal area of Southern Italy), where our alphabet come from. At the beginning, first scribes draw the signs in mono-line, but later on, the influence of materials, tools and the skill of calligraphers, developed the refinement of the lettering. “Calcis” is a family of sans serif fonts, characterized by its austere, functional and clear style, emerged from straight lines and primary shapes; but enriched by the contribution of countless anonymous calligraphers who have polished and embellished their forms over the years. “Calcis” is presented in five weights and italic style. It has good legibility in small sizes, elegance and strong visual impact in headlines as well. A Stylish Technology Sans Serif Initiate began as a digitization of a film typeface from LetterGraphics in the early 70's known as "Kent". ITC Tactile is a puzzle of subtle typographic contradictions. Capitals have traditional epigraphic proportions, but the lowercase has a uniform optical width. Light weights are stately and elegant, but bold designs are almost jolly. This paradoxical alphabet even combines two distinctively different serif designs. Designer Joe Stitzlein says, “I wanted to create a modern and dynamic serif face that draws its forms from antiquity. I also wanted to have as much fun as possible with the drawing and architecture of each letter. Hopefully I've created a very legible typeface that grabs the reader's eye in a nice, 'tactile' way.” The apparent inconsistencies of the design are the result of careful consideration. Of the seemingly odd serif design, Stitzlein explains, “The transitional serif is an entry point for the eye into the letterform, and the long slab is an exit, leading to the next letter.” The result is a typeface that's easy to read at text sizes but offers surprising details when enlarged to display sizes, setting ITC Tactile apart from more traditional designs. While this is his first commercial typeface design, Stitzlein has ample experience creating custom typefaces for corporate branding, including companies such as Silicon Graphics and Sempra Energy. His graphic design business has served a wide range of clients, including Apple Computer and the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. My son Sam saved all his pennies for a trip to Japan with me. Hi dream came true this year and we traveled around Honshu for 10 days. One of the things on his ‘to do’ list was eating yakitori, so I took him to famous Yakitori Alley in Tokyo. The setting was legendary, the smell was great, but the yakitori, unfortuntely, was so-so.. Upon numerous demands of highly esteemed users of our fonts I decided to supplement the Walbaum type family by display and poster cuts. Because I obviously cannot compete with world’s renowned type foundries which already offer a number of renderings of forenamed typeface, I thought proper to decline a bit from the original Walbaum’s design, strictly speaking, from the apprehension we commonly keep about this typeface. Therefore I didn’t set forth the way of modernizing (shame!), but rather the opposite direction: towards an analysis of the original neo-classical intention. I took the 10-point character, magnified it enormously and cut off progressively all the optically thickened bobbles which raised by small-size correction. I ended up at the size of about 120 points, where it became obvious that any further thinning would lead to an undesired manneristic fragility. Resulting 8-member family Walbaum 120 is naturally usable in variety of sizes, as well as cuts marked “10” you can use, say, from 6 to 30 points. I only hope that mister Justus Erich won’t pull me by the ear when we’ll meet on the other side...

Trigomy is a proportional pixel font designed on a 5 pixel grid. It is intended for either very small text or as huge display font for posters and the like. To get a crisp look this font should be used at 10 pt or multiples of 10 pt. (A tip for Adobe Creative Suite applications is to change the standard anti-aliasing method from “sharp” to “crisp” and to align the text to whole pixels. Also avoid centered text.) To get started with type design I thought it was best to start with a pixel font because you don't have to focus much on the design itself, but rather have to focus on how kerning and spacing works and the various features you can implement with OpenType. And of course I wanted to have a pixel font that had all that I was missing from other pixel fonts. We were learning trigonometry at the time I started designing Trigomy, and most of the time I misspoke it “trigometry”. So, when I had to come up with a name for my first font I thought: "Why not go with Trigomy?"

Quartal is a family of stylish sans serif typefaces of condensed proportions. The family consists of 5 regular weights, 4 condensed ones and 13 extended styles (7 upright and 6 italic). At first there was intention to release just 4 condensed weights for headlines and advertising texts, but later 5 styles of wider proportions were added. As the result the area of applications becomes much wider due to possibility to use the font for smaller point sizes. The name "Quartal", which in this case means city quarter, according to author's associations emphasizes the advertising nature of the design most suitable to the urban environment. Character set of the fonts covers alphabets of Western Europe and basic Cyrillic languages. In addition, it includes a range of alternatives, especially in Cyrillic part.
