Lyra is an Italian Renaissance script that might have developed if metal type had not broken the evolution of broad pen calligraphy. A steep pen-angle allows use of a broader pen relative to the x-height, giving the letters more contrast with light verticals and heavy curves. D^44 Caps represents a sort of inverted creative process: start from the printed element to create the font to print. The esthetic analysis of pression's missprint is the origin of D^44 design. The redesign of this misprint has created 3 versions differentiated by optical weight: Bold, Only and Light.

The 1927 beginner’s book for Shefte’s Rapid Course in Modern Piano Playing had its title hand lettered in a bold serif typeface that reflected some of the influences of the Art Nouveau era. This became the model for Music Course JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
