I used to be a tour guide and I traveled to China numerous times. Usually, the itinerary mentioned going to a restaurant in Beijing and eating ‘Beijing Roast Duck’ (北京烤鸭), a famous dish that has been prepared since the Imperial era. Typically, the whole duck is sliced at your table. The skin is crisp, glazed and thin and you should eat it with thin pancakes and thinly sliced spring onion. Of course, if I had to guide several ‘China tours’ in a row, I would often eat something else (there is only so much Beijing Duck you can eat). Peking Duck is a nice, handmade, Chinese Ink font. I am a firm believer in the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, for the last 10 years (ever since I became a father), I have been serving my family a healthy breakfast. I live in The Netherlands, so the main portion of breakfast is bread, but I try to serve something ‘nice’ every day. Like strawberries, yoghurt with banana and brown sugar (not too much sugar!), oatmeal porridge or granola. I myself like Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) for breakfast, but I am afraid my kids won’t eat that in the morning… Power Breakfast is a handmade display font. Yes, it is wobbly, yes, it is uneven, but that’s what’s so darn good about it!

Nyfors was a sudden idea. I noticed an ad in a magazine, with some handtexted words. I don't recall what the ad was about, neither the words. When I later on tried to remember how the single characters looked like and began to draw them, the result wasn't bad at all. I am not longer sure that they resemble the characters in the ad, but it doesn't matter. Nyfors is a nice handtexted typeface, whatever its origin. There is a small stream in Tyresö where I live and work, called Nyfors. During some centuries there was a center of small scale industries along it, and they used its water to run their machinery. The typeface has its name from that stream. Nyfors was released in 1995.

Carved in the wall... a Legend: "Here may be found the last words of Joseph of Aramathia: He who finds the Grail must face three, maybe four, challenges. First, the path of God; Second, the word of God; Third, the breath of God, and fourth is the Font of God. Only a font that is valiant, pure of spirit and includes international characters, both European AND Cyrillic -- may find the Holy Grail... in the Castle of AARRGGGHHH… That's all it says; the guy carving it must have died before he could finish.

In May of this year, I went to Japan with my (then 11 year old) son Sam. It was his dream to visit Japan, probably because of my tall tales, stemming from the time I was a tour guide! Sam really wanted to try all kinds of Japanese delicacies and one day, when walking around Tokyo, we came across a little stall selling Taiyaki. Taiyaki are fish-shaped waffle/cakes with a red bean or sweet potato filling. They are really delicious! This nice ‘oriental looking’ font was made with a broken popsicle stick and Chinese ink. You are now wondering why I always use Chinese ink and not Japanese ink. Well, I have a stash of the Chinese stuff and it’ll last me a lifetime!

Sans-Skript is a display typeface that is inspired by Javanese Script (or Sanskerta in Bahasa Indonesia). Javanese script is one of Indonesia’s many traditional scripts that were commonly used by Javanese people from mid-15th CE to mid-20th CE. Though not commonly used anymore, it is still taught and used in cities across East and Central Java. Sans-Skript translates the high-contrast, modular and organic features of the Javanese Script into the Latin alphabet. (Hence the not-script naming) The typeface is aimed to be used for large format prints, above 100 pt, and can be used alongside Javanese script. Typefaces that pair nicely mimic features of Javanese script, and Hatton by Pangram Pangram Foundry is an example.

When I started working on this font, I had the radio on. Ed Sheeran was singing his song ‘Castle On The Hill’ and when I looked at this new font of mine, I couldn’t help but notice it had a bit of a medieval look. So I named it Castle On The Hill. COTH is a very lively, messy handpainted serif. It was made with a Japanese brush pen. I actually had a different look in mind, but this is what came out of the pen and I quite liked its looks. It is especially useful for children’s book covers, apps and posters, but be my guest and use it as you like. All it needs is a designers’ touch, a nice tune and a sunset.

Back in the nineties I had a deck of Tarot cards. It was part interest and part curiosity, but I also liked the look of them. My readings were just for fun; I thought it was all a joke, but when people started to return for more readings (because what I had predicted actually happened), I quit. That was way out of my comfort zone! Fortune Teller is a nice brush font. I made it with one of my late father in law’s Chinese brushes and ink. It comes with all diacritics and a set of alternate glyphs. If you buy this font, you will meet with a tall and handsome stranger and you will win the lottery. Guaranteed! Haha!

Merlo Neue is the younger brother of Merlo. New family received refreshed, more square proportions and a new shape of many glyphs. Italic version has narrower and lighter proportions. Font has a glyph set for latin script and old-style figures. Merlo Neue would be a great choice for display use as well as for the longer texts.
