A companion piece to Mulgrave, this font is the intermediary design between the chunky Victorian style that Mulgrave reproduces and the Ministry of Transport sans introduced in 1933 and digitised as Ministry. Although they date from between 1910 and 1933, these signs show the beginnings of several features Ministry later incorporated, notably the thinner strokes and the more modern forms of the G, M, R and S. The letter widths are approaching a monospace - the L, F and E are relatively wide compared to the W and M, a feature that may have something to do to the casting process. These idiosyncracies were all ironed out when the first version of the MOT alphabet was produced. The Device digitization, as with Mulgrave, stays true to the worn and repainted original metal source material and preserves the unusual widths.

One of the good practices of today’s type foundries is that they release their type families as systems including both serif and sans serif type. Usually, the sources of inspiration need to be well tried with time and practice, since production of a type family is such a laborious and complex process. From the beginning, it needs to be clear that the result will be suited for universal use. Such systems, complete with the broad, multi-lingual variations permitted by the OpenType format, have become the elementary, default instrument of visual communication. Non-Latin scripts are useful for a wide scope of academic publications, for packaging and corporate systems alike. And what about outdoor advertisement designated for markets in developing countries? Cyrillics and Greek have become an integral part of our OpenType font systems. Maybe you noticed that the sans serif cuts have richer variety of the light – black scale. This is due to the fact that sans serif families tend to be less susceptible to deformities in form, and thus they are able to retain their original character throughout the full range of weights. On the other hand, the nature of serifed, contrasted cuts does not permit such extremes without sacrificing their characteristic features. Both weights were drawn by hand, only the Medium cut has been interpolated. Anselm Ten is a unique family of four cuts, slightly strengthened and adjusted for the setting in sizes around 10 pt and smaller, as its name indicates. The ancestry of Anselm goes back to Jannon , a slightly modified Old Style Roman. I drew Serapion back in 1997, so its spirit is youthful, a bit frisky, and it is charmed by romantic, playful details. Anselm succeeds it after ten years of evolution, it is a sober, reliable laborer, immune to all eccentricities. The most significant difference between Sebastian/Serapion and Anselm is the raised x-height of lowercase, which makes it ideal for applications in extensive texts. Our goal was to create an all-round type family, equally suitable for poetry, magazines, books, posters, and information systems.

Shelflife is a display typeface with some extras under the lid. Lettering found on the cover of the 1923 song "I Love Me (I'm Wild About Myself)" can take on various graphical possibilities. Although its design is Art Nouveau in concept, it is somewhat reminiscent of the "bubble letters" most school kids used to doodle on notebook and portfolio covers; yet the lettering style also evokes the 1960s-70s Hippie movement. As a sidebar, a couple of lines from the song's lyrics were used by Jeff Levine's late mother to chastise him as a youth when he got "a little too full of himself". The lyrics were: "I love me! I love me! I'm wild about myself! I love me! I love me! My picture's on the shelf!"

Brolly Fight is a fun, slim line font with off-kilter lines. I had so much fun creating this one! It has a stick figure art deco feel. It's fun and playful, with lots of ligatures and alternates to play with. Mix and match lowercase and uppercase letters for a unique look. At home we love bananas: the kids take them to school for ‘snack time’, they’re healthy and they look pretty as well! Republica Banana is a pun on the term Banana Republic, which was coined by American author O. Henry in 1901. In economics, a Banana Republic is a country that is run as a private commercial enterprise for the exclusive profit of the ruling class. Of course I can point out a few countries that fit this description, but let’s not get into that. Republica Banana is a very nice, hand painted brush font. It comes with double letter ligatures for the lower case and a lot of diacritics for you to play with.

I had a chat recently with a customer who is a big fan of lettering from the psychedelic poster era. The discussion got me thinking about poster lettering we hadn't yet made into fonts, and a particular sample from a Jimi Hendrix poster I had played around with but never finished making into a font. So I went back to the drawing board and the result is the new Hendrix font. Unlike many of our other Psychedelic fonts which are stripped down to their basic character forms, this font includes the outlines characteristic of a lot of poster lettering from that period.
