Jesus Saves is a font based on the familiar old logo that has “JESUS” hidden within a maze-like set of multi-branched vertical bars. Paintlay is a casual and laid-back brush script font. Bouncy baseline, upright strokes and soft forms are the main characteristic of Paintlay. What sets this font apart from others is the layers that include Base layer, two different highlight layers and two shadow layers. You can either use the Base layer as a regular font. Spekulatus is a made up name, and that was what I needed for a font like this. I am not sure which category it fits in: grunge, square, handmade, rough or maybe even graffiti? Well, let's just say that it fits in all 5 - or perhaps even more? All letters are handdrawn, and messed up a bit with a thin fine white liner, leaving a gentle grungy and worn effect. I've added 5 different versions of each letter, which is quite nice - not having the same letters repeating all the time!

Tiza is a rough take on informal faces and handwriting, brought on by the recent demand for scripts and brush lettering. Its flow leaves traces simulating runny pen ink, which makes it very suitable for handwriting-like paragraphs as well as casual greeting card and invitation setting. The bold weight, Tiza Negra, fits very nicely on book covers as well as large signs. Tiza is the proverbial reminder that typefaces can sometimes be more human than they are normally perceived. NO! I don’t have a bearskin rug, nor a fur collar on my jacket. I believe fur should only be worn by its first owner. I have no idea why I called this font Bearskin: maybe I was influenced by one of the Viking novels I am reading - they’re full of Berserkers - but that name was already taken. Anyhoo, Bearskin font is a nice handmade all caps font. A little rough here and there, but with a lot of character as well. Bearskin comes with swashes, so you can have a ball!

Pipeline is a futuristic and technical looking typeface. But as the name suggest it’s also earthly, (literally). Deep down underneath villages, city’s everywhere and even oceans there’s a network of pipelines. Providing us all sorts of supplies, like water and oil. Sewers wash fluid waste away. They are never to be looked upon as pretty or beautiful but purely functional. The soil peeled off and looked upon from above, a greater industrial infrastructure is revealed, cluttered like spaghetti, complex as the maze of corridors of termite colonies. I present two pipelines to you; one naked and one dressed. This typeface is very suitable for graphic, logo and poster design. It is quadratic shaped with round curves. It is modern and classic at the same time. It could be appealing for young, technical, digital, inventive and urban (sub) culture (at any age).

By chance I stumbled upon an unfinished font in my fonts folder (while looking for something else). It had a stupid working name, but when I opened it, the font looked really nice! I have no idea why I never finished it. I renamed it Ukiyo Mind, because the font looked a bit like Japanese brush strokes. Ukiyo is a Japanese term which roughly translates as ‘the fleeting/transient world’. In mediaval Japan, the word was associated with Buddhism, but later it was used to describe the urban lifestyle and the pleasure seeking aspects of it. Nowadays it refers to a ‘living in the moment’ state of mind. Ukiyo Mind is a really nice brush font, which I probably made using Chinese ink and a brush. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs.

Press Gothic is a revival of Aldo Novarese's Metropol typeface, released by Nebiolo in 1967 as a competitor to Stephenson Blake's Impact (designed by Goeffrey Lee). Though Metropol enjoyed a few short months of popularity and use in Italy, Germany and France, Impact won the technological outlasting battle by moving on to film type then to computer outlines bundled with mainstream software, while Metropol never made it past the metal state until now. Too bad really, since this is one of the few faces that could have played well with all the horrendous stretch'n'squeezing of the 1970s. Just like its inspiration, Press Gothic aims to be a fresh alternative to big economical poster fonts with clear sans serif forms and an urgent, strong, yet elegant design appeal. In the summer of 2008, Press Gothic underwent a major linguistic and aesthetic reworking for an international publishing company. The result of this on the retail side are new small capitals and biform/unicase additions to the main font, as well as expanded language support that includes Cyrillic, Greek, Turkish, Baltic, Central and Eastern European, Maltese, and Esperanto. Blackletter fonts are timelessly beautiful and still very popular. At some point, it seems that every type designer discovers the beauty of these forms and the great pleasure in creating blackletter characters. Like also Dutch designer Coen Hofmann who, after designing Caxtonian Gothic, has designed yet another Blackletter font: Holland Gothic. Holland Gothic reminds of the 18th century »Duytsch« typefaces of Joan Michael Fleischmann and Christoffel Van Dyck. But Hofmann was mainly inspired by the Dutch calligraphers from the 17th and 18th century. Many years ago I studied American Sign Language in an effort to better communicate with some friends of mine within the deaf community. I found ASL to be a beautifully expressive language from a vibrant and active culture. Out of that attempt came this stylized depiction of the manual alphabet used in finger-spelling. Until recently it had only existed in analog form, born of pen and ink on paper. So now I'm glad to say it’s turned digital. Typing a period (.) will reveal the sign for “I Love You” (a combination of the letters I, L and Y), which fits nicely within the shape of a heart. Holding down the shift key while again typing period (greater symbol) will reveal the heart in its filled-in form, which can serve as an underlay. Use these in an application that supports layering in order to create different color combinations. There’s a stylistic alternate letter “S” and an “OO” ligature which can be accessed in OpenType-savvy apps.

Before Bodoni, there was Didot. With the publication by Francois Ambroise Didot of Paris in 1784 of his prospectus for Tasso’s La Gerusalemme Liberata, the rococo typographical style of Fournier de Jeune was replaced with a spartan, neo-classical style that John Baskerville pioneered. The typeface Didot used for this work was of Didot’s own creation and is considered by both G. Dowding and P. Meggs to be the first modern face. Three years later, Bodoni of Parma is using a very similar face. Just as Bodoni’s typeface evolved over time, so did that of the Didot family. The eldest son of Francois Ambroise Didot, Pierre, ran the printing office; and Firmin ran the typefoundry. Pierre used the flattened, wove paper, again pioneered by Baskerville, to permit a more accurate impression and allow the use of more delicate letterforms. Firmin took full advantage of the improved paper by further refining the typeface introduced by his father. The printing of Racine’s Oeuvres in 1801 (seen in our gallery image #2) shows the symbiotic results of their efforts, especially in the marked increase in the sharpness of the serifs when compared to their owns works of only six years earlier. It has been suggested that one reason Bodoni achieved greater popularity than Didot is the thinner hairlines of Didot were more fragile when cast in metal type and thus more expensive for printers to use than Bodoni. This ceased to be a problem with the advent of phototypesetting, opening the door for a renewed interest in the work of the Didot family and especially that of Firmin Didot. Although further refinements in the Didot typeface were to come (notably the lower case ‘g’ shown in 1819), we have chosen 1801 as the nominal basis for our presentation of HiH Firmin Didot. We like the thick-thin circumflex that replaced the evenly-stroked version of 1795, possible only with the flatter wove paper. We like the unusual coat-hanger cedilla. We like the organic, leaf-like tail of the ‘Q.’ We like the strange, little number ‘2’ and the wonderfully assertive ‘4.’ And we like the distinctive and delightful awkwardness of the double-v (w). Please note that we have provided alternative versions of the upper and lower case w that are slightly more conventional than the original designs. Personally, I find the moderns (often called Didones) hard on the eyes in extended blocks of text. That does not stop me from enjoying their cold, crisp clarity. They represent the Age of Reason and the power of man’s intellect, while reflecting also its limitations. In the title pages set by Bodoni, Bulmer and Didot, I see the spare beauty of a winter landscape. That appeals to a New Englander like myself. Another aspect that appeals to me is setting a page in HiH Firmin Didot and watching people try to figure out what typeface it is. It looks a lot like Bodoni, but it isn't!

The designer of ITC Medea , Silvio Napoleone said: “I've always had an interest in early letter shapes, particularly how they influenced modern typographic designs. While I was on vacation in Greece, I had a chance to see, first-hand, examples of early letterforms and typography. They really made an impression on me.” The idea of combining the ancient and the modern to create something new was the primary inspiration behind ITC Medea. ITC Medea is essentially a careful blending of the modern sans serif with the elegant forms of the uncial. At first glance, Medea appears to be constructed of geometric shapes. However, closer inspection reveals many calligraphic subtleties. Stroke terminals are flared slightly in characters like the 'e' and 'c.' The top curve of the 'd' is more pronounced than the bottom, and characters like the 'o' are elliptical rather than round. “I gravitated towards the simplicity and legibility of the uncial and half-uncial,” Napoleone recalls. “I thought it would make a great titling font, and I was surprised at how attractive ITC Medea looked in a body text.”
