Sardines is a project by Jacques Le Bailly aka Baron von Fonthausen. It first saw the light as a student project for a monospaced font and eventually grew into Vette Letters’ largest font family. We saw its potential and expect it to be a million seller, just like our other typefaces. VLNL Sardines comes in 42 different variations, like rough and clean cuts, regular and condensed widths (condensed is the exactly half of the regular width). Sardines is an eclectic mash of classic curves and mathematical measurements, leaving a very distinct typographic flavor. While most of our type is market-fresh, this one comes out of the can, but it’s delicious nonetheless. And it’s great for adventurous BBQ-ing!

Joy Redick designed Blackoak, a big and heavy Egyptienne-sytle titling slab serif face, in 1990. The extremely robust style of the characters in this typeface was consciously distorted; creating letterforms that appear flattened and stretched, like a rubber band. Blackoak is drawn in the style of old wood tpes, just like those that one envisions when one thinks of the large, decorative posters that once filled Wild West America. The wood type collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC acted as a primary source of inspiration for this design. True to its rooks, Blackoak is meant for use exclusively in headlines in very large point sizes, or for logos and other corporate advertising purposes.

This font was inspired by the paint brushed letters in use in the 60 - 70s for protest slogans tagged on the cities walls. In those days, we didn't commonly use aerosols like today, so we used paint brushes, with paint or tar cans, drew the letters, and ran away quickly ! Capitals and lower case have the same size, and a lot of alternates characters or ligatures allows the user to vary each letter (until tree alternates for single letters) in each word of a text . Likewise, the words may be easily underscored or intersected by a few stains looking like paint spots, substituted to the following standards characters: [greater], [less], [dagger], [backslash], [bullet], and [underscore].

Falstaff first appeared with Monotype in 1931, an alphabet in the style of a wide, bold antiqua that was especially popular in the first third of the 19th century. Such typefaces distinguished themselves through their consistent basis in the transitional antiqua style. They are characterized by their extremely fine unflexed serifs with no curve connecting them to the thick strokes. The numerals with their generous curves and ball-like stroke endings and beginnings are particularly decorative. The vertical strokes are dominant and give lines of this typeface a column-like and therefore static look. Falstaff is today often used for book titling, especially for mystery novels. It is best used sparingly in middle and larger point sizes.

One day my kids asked me: ‘would you rather be healthy and poor or super rich and sick?’ Without a doubt I answered: ‘healthy and poor’. Having money is nice, but it is not what life is about. At least, that is what I believe. Radical Fortune is a font I made after a period in my life that could have ended with a really nice sum of money in my hands - but which I didn’t take. I had to give up too much of myself and that just didn’t feel right. I made Radical Fortune to keep me from thinking too much - and, symbolically, I used a really old and cheap marker pen to draw out the glyphs!

A couple of years ago, I walked the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan. At the start of the walk, I stayed in a nice guesthouse in Tanabe city, which lies in Wakayama prefecture. I wouldn’t mention all of this, if it didn’t have something to do with the font name: Wakayama prefecture is THE mandarin orange (Mikan) growing area of Japan and the owner of the guesthouse had just picked a bagful of mikan, which he shared with me. So, I had to think of that when I made this font. Mikan is a nice, rounded family of fonts. Both styles come with alternative a’s (and accented a’s), which some people prefer for Children’s books.

Inspired by the large American wood type of the Wild West, Richard Yeend created Italienne Std in 2002. Italienne Std is both very condensed and very decorative. It sports heavy, band like serifs, reminiscent of other italienne-style fonts, like Westside. Italienne-style fonts rose in popularity during the early 19th Century, when designers were first beginning to experiment with extreme contrast within letterforms, and across lines of text. Interestingly enough, letterforms with similar designs were just as common during the 1970s as during the 1870s, so you may use Italienne Std for applications ranging from country music concerts to disco parties. A bit of happenstance and accident are always full of possibility — Richard Lipton’s Dunhill Script is based on observations of the work of his left-handed calligraphy students and then from a small detail generated by his own freehand sketching. Like his other script typefaces, Dunhill was born from the desire to achieve a certain visual drama. Many details show the pen at work, like the terminal shapes and the caps and ascenders. Dunhill also has a range of alternate stylistic glyphs and contextual features that can transform it into a connected script. »Brute Sans« is a classic Sans typeface that looks like it has been designed by a chainsaw. »Brute Sans« looks really crude only in big sizes, the smaller the font gets the more it looks like any other Sans typeface. »Brute Sans« prints very fast, because there are no curves to compute, but that is just a side effect. »Brute Sans« is the typeface you should use if you need a really different look, since Sans typefaces tend by design to look very similar. This one is different. I always wanted to do this font, but then other projects crept up so I pushed »Brute Sans« to the end of the line. Enjoy!

In thinking about a way to express the character of this script, it occurred to me that the splitting of the main downstrokes in the caps is almost like when knife cuts into butter. Picture a butter knife that slices into butter, slowly wedging the cut wider so that when it is pulled back, the remaining shape would resemble the main downstroke of any capital letter. The lowercase characters have an almost roundhand-like character but with a slightly more formal presence. Available in Postscript, Truetype and Opentype for both Mac and Windows, Beurre is ideal for Menu's, Invitations and pretty much anywhere you need a reasonably strong, but friendly legible script. Just like my previous typefaces, my new one, Smooth Buggaloo, also finds its roots in music. The Boogaloo was a popular music style in the 60s, a mixture of Latin and Rock and Roll music. Later Salsa took over this genre. Latin music represents a vibrant, lively and an uncontrollable need to move. In Smooth Buggaloo, you will recognize a swing, flair and a hint of seduction. But despite its vibrancy it can also be understood as a serious, simple and clean typeface. The characters vary between a handwritten and a designed look. Smooth Buggaloo is very suitable for any graphic purpose, like logo- and poster design and it can also be used for longer texts.

Zibryain is a unique display font. Modern style created as a result of my experiments on letterforms, on the one hand I like the appearance of the individual curved lines, on the other hand they seem very strange, foreign and illogical. It was like looking into a microscope and seeing something strange. I wanted to develop and study these forms as something new, because I had never seen anything similar before. The result is a contrasting font that has sharp, smooth curves and lines. Zebrawood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, who also designed Rosewood, Ponderose and Pepperwood together. Like its relatives, Zebrawood also displays a kind of Wild West character. Its style can be traced back to the Toscanienne typefaces which appeared in advertisements and on signs at the end of the 19th century. Typical of this capital alphabet are the split serifs and robust base forms, which emphasize the typeface's decorative character. Zebrawood is, like Rosewood and Schwennel, meant as a bicolor font, meaning that the weight Zebrawood fill complements the inner spaces of Zebrawood regular. When used carefully in headlines, Zebrawood font will be sure to attract attention.

Bakeshop is a casual script font family. It is drawn with rounded marker so the contrast is quite low. It has bumps at the end of strokes where the pen has stopped and the ink has spread. Bakeshop includes three weights and has both connecting and non-connecting versions. Connecting Bakeshop versions has OpenType features like Final Forms, looping connections with lowercase e, high connecting stroke with ascenders and plenty of discretionary ligatures. This font was created inspired from a handwritten copy of the "Brief story of the second journey in Canada" (1535) by French explorer Jacques Cartier. It is an early "Civilité" manual style, closely looking like the "Civilité" script font carved by Robert Granjon a few years later and still strongly influenced by blackletters forms, clearly visible in the capitals or long s, d, e, f or t forms. (Look at our "1557 Civilite Granjon Pro" and the latest "1638 Civilite Manual"). It is containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. Historical forms, titling alternates and the numerous lower alternates or ligatures made the font looking like a real various hand.

I had a really weird dream the other night, but when I woke up, I had forgotten it. I had the feeling it was about something important, but I cannot, for the life of me, recall what I dreamt about! Forgotten Dream is a horror brush font, which I made with a brushy brush and Chinese ink. It looks like something right out of a nightmare, but you can also use it for something important. Like a ‘keep your distance’ poster, or a sign about the importance of washing ones hands. But then again, if you play in a death metal band, then Forgotten Dream font could be exactly what you need for your album cover!

Aeronic is a work of love. I stumbled upon a fantastic Japanese poster for Nikke Coat by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907 - 1981). Gihachiro Okuyama (also: Okayama) was a very prolific Japanese print artist who started his career making woodblock prints, but later moved on to posters and advertisements. I tried to recreate the hand lettering in the original 1937 Nikke Coat poster, but since I had to work with a few glyphs only, I designed the remaining ones myself. The outline of Aeronic is rather thin, with thicker bits in some glyphs. It is quite rough in places, but it all adds to its unique look. Aeronic comes with a bonanza of diacritics.

My brother is an architect, and I have always loved his lettering, you know, the style of writing that can be found on architectural drawings. There is a common thread to it, yet each architect or engineer brings their own personality to it. I have seen a similar style being used by some hand-letterers for invitations, place cards and signage. Inspired, I set out to create my own, and the result is my new typeface, Robard! I wanted something compact, somewhat modular, done quickly but with control, and sourced from hand-lettering. Starting out with a handful of pigment ink pens, I settled on a 0.1mm Copic Multi-Liner, and using a light table with a grid underneath the paper, I cranked out grouping after grouping, letter after letter, numbers, punctuation, accents, just trying to zero in on the feeling and the look I was after. There were some ideas that didn't work, like unicase (there would be no regular lowercase), or swash alternates. Ultimately, I ended up with a decent array of glyphs to choose from, and alternates like oldstyle numbers, and an alternate set of caps for the lowercase slots, and even alternative figures so doubles like 88 would be different. In the font, the OpenType ligature code automatically alternates the cap and lowercase (alternate cap) letters, and numbers as you type, lending Robard that hand-lettered look in a digital typeface that I was hoping for. There are also oldstyle figures, and unlimited fractions, ordinals, and a few alternate letters. I hope you like Robard!

A very expanded sans serif font in capital letters inspired by the inscription on a bank note Old bank notes tend to have a very typical typography. Usually they carry decorative and elaborately designed markings. For one thing, they must be practically impossible to forge and for another, they should make a respectable and legitimate impression. And in the days of copper and steel engravings, that meant nothing less than creating ornate, shaded or otherwise complicated scripts. Designing the appropriate script was literally in the hands of the engraver. That’s why I noticed this bank note from 1948. It is the first 20 mark bill in the then newly created currency ”Deutsche Mark.“ All other bank notes of the 1948 series show daintier forms of typography with an obvious tendency toward modern face. The 1949 series which followed shortly thereafter reveals the more complicated script as well. For whatever reason, only this 20 mark bill displays this extremely expanded sans serif variation of the otherwise Roman form applied. This peculiarity led me in the year 2010 to create a complete font from the single word ”Banknote.“ Back to those days in the 40’s, the initial edition of DM bank notes was carried out by a special US-American printer who was under pressure of completing on time and whose engravers not only engraved but also designed. So that’s why the bank notes resemble dollars and don’t even look like European currency. That also explains some of the uniquely designed characters when looked at in detail. Especially the almost serif type form on the letters C, G, S and Z, but also L and T owe their look to the ”American touch.“ The ingoFont Banknote 1948 comprises all characters of the Latin typeface according to ISO 8859 for all European languages including Turkish and Baltic languages. In order to maintain the character of the original, the ”creation“ of lower case letters was waived. This factor doesn’t contribute to legibility, but this kind of type is not intended for long texts anyway; rather, it unfolds its entire attraction when used as a display font, for example on posters. Banknote 1948 is also very suitable for distortion and other alien techniques, without too much harm being done to the characteristic forms. With Banknote 1948 ingoFonts discloses a font like scripts which were used in advertising of the 1940’s and 50’s and were popular around the world. But even today the use of this kind of font can be expedient, especially considering how Banknote 1948, for its time of origin, impresses with amazingly modern detail.

PRISMATIC SPIRALS FONT! The Prismatic Spirals Font is a decorative type-system and ‘Assembling Game’, itself. Settled in squared pieces modules or tiles, embedded by unprecedented Intertwined Prismatic Structures Design, or intricate interlaced bars that may seem quite “impossible” to shape. Although it originated from the ‘Penrose Square’, it may not look totally as an Impossible Figures Type of Optical Illusions. More an “improbable” Effect in its intertwined Design, that even static can seem like a source of Kinetical Sculptures, or drive eyes into a kind of hypnosis. Prismatic Spirals has two related families, its “bold” braided version Prismatic Interlaces and the Pro version. While the default is simpler or easier to use, as all piece’s spin in same way, PRO provides a more complex intricate Design which requires typing alternating caps. Background History: The first sketches of my Prismatic Knots or Spirals Designs dates back then from 2010, while started developing hand-drawn Celtic Knots and Geometric Drawings in grid paper, while engage to Typography, Sacred Geometry and the “Impossible Figures” genre… I started doing modulation tests from 2013, until around 2018, I got to unravel it in square modules or tiles from the grid, then idealized it as fonts, along with other Type projects. This took 13 years to come out since the first sketches and 6 months in edition. During the production process some additional tiles or missing pieces were thought of and added to the basic set, which firstly had only the borders, corners, crossings, nets, Trivets connectors or T parts and ends, then added with nets and borders integrations. Usage Suggestions: This type-system enables the user to ornate and generate endless decorative patterns, borders, labyrinthine designs, Mosaics, motifs, etc. It can seem just like a puzzle, but a much greater tool instead for higher purposes as to compose Enigmas and use seriously. As like also to write Real Text by assembling the key characters or pieces, this way you can literarily reproduce any Pixel Design or font to its Prismatic Spirals correspondent form, as Kufic Arabic script and further languages and compose messages easily… This Typeface was made to be contemplated, applied, and manufactured on Infinite Decorative Designs as Pavements, Tapestry, Frames, Prints, Fabrics, Bookplates, Coloring Books, Cards, covers or architectonic frontispieces, storefronts, and Jewelry, for example. Usage Tips: Notice that the line-height must be fixed to 100% or 1,0. In some cases, as on Microsoft Word for example, the line-height default is set to 1,15. So you’ll need to change to 1,0 plus remove space after paragraph, in the same dropdown menu on Paragraph section. Considering Word files too, since the text used for mapping the Designs, won't make any literal orthographical sense, the user must select to ignore the Spellcheck underlined in red, by clicking over each misspelled error or in revision, so it can be better appreciated. Although it originated from the ‘Penrose Square’, it may not look totally as an Impossible Figures Type of Optical Illusions. More an “improbable” Effect in its intertwined Design, that even static can seem like a source of Kinetical Sculptures, or drive eyes into a kind of hypnosis. Prismatic Interlaces has two related families, both as a kind of lighter weight versions Prismatic Spirals Default & Pro.
