Chipper is the work of British designer Andrew Smith, an adorably awkward typeface resembling the first printing of a child. At one time, the Hampton Publishing Company of New York specialized in producing reading and activity books for children. The “Letters and Numbers Stencil Book” (probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s) was the basis for Kiddie Stencil JNL. This bold sans serif type style replicates the handmade steel rule dies used for cutting the stencil pages of the book, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Atonement is a splattery, scratchy font. I made it with a steel nibbed pen, a brush and some Chinese ink. I based it on my fonts Ravenheart, Qilin and American Grunge - mostly because I really like them. Of course, all of these fonts are influenced by the work of the great Ralph Steadman - someone I greatly admire. The vintage sheet music for "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" yielded another bit of Art Deco-era lettering perfect for developing into a digital font. This time it wasn't the song title, but rather the name of the show it was from serving as the type inspiration - the Cotton Club's 1931 revue "Rhythm-Mania". Harlem's Cotton Club was an "exclusive, whites only" club; both famous for its talent and shows, yet infamous for hiring black acts but not allowing black patronage. On the sheet music, the show title was hand lettered in a bold, slightly stylized fashion which became the basis for Rhythmic Revue JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

Excessively long titles, novelty tunes and "foreign themes" permeated the piles of sheet music in the local music shops. 1916's "Oh How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo (That's Love in Honolu)" covered a number of these quirks within one publication. This Hawaiian-tinged song evoked the mysterious ways of the South Seas islands, despite the abridging of Honolulu to "Honolu". Nonetheless, the hand lettered title of this particular piece of sheet music featured an Art Nouveau-influenced bold block letter with rounded corners. Vododeo JNL is directly named for the free-form sheet music title lettering from Jack Yellen and Milton Ager's "Vo-Do-De-O". The term itself was a catchphrase made popular during the era known as the "Roaring 20s". Yellen and Ager were responsible for such hits as "Ain't She Sweet" (1927) and "Happy Days Are Here Again" (1930) along with countless others. During his career, Jack Yellen provided lyrics to over 200 songs. As a side note, Yellen was married to a distant cousin of type designer Jeff Levine's late mother.

Organic versus geometric are two different universes that converges on nature systems and has its reflection on this new sans serif typeface.
