Akira Kobayashi modified his Eurostile Next design into a fun unicase version. Ascenders and descenders have been traded in for alternates of letters that all share the same height. The effect is similar to using all caps, although this is quite a bit more quirky. For example, letters like the lowercase a and e are now the same height as their capital versions and the lowercase y has been raised to fit between the baseline and top height. Lettering has an unusual way of adapting itself to many needs. The type style for Sporting Chance JNL was based on metal house identification letters used for Welcome Home JNL. The same type of block design was prevalent in 1920s-1930s era window signage via die-cut foil characters. Yet we tend to nowadays associate block lettering with sports-themed items. Record Store Stencil is based on classic stencil lettering from the first half of the 20th century. The font features Upper and lowercase, small caps, in upright, italic, and backslant. Rock Face was inspired by a crude but effective home made sign I came across advertising a garage sale. The lettering was created using sticky black insulation tape which, like a child's drawing, had a certain naive charm. The type design presented here is obviously more considered, but I like to think it has the same raw dynamism.
