Here is a wonderfully charming typeface similar in style to the folklore lettering created by Walter Crane, the prolific children’s book illustrator. This English artist created many beautiful, flower-decorated works during the Arts and Crafts movement that flourished between 1860 and 1910. English Garden SG Regular contains many of Crane’s original whimsical and quirky characters. Note the inclusion of a spurred capital G, a squat lowercase g, a bending floral lowercase d, and the quaint old style figures. DuBois JNL is based on hand lettering designed by Albert DuBois of New York City, and originally titled "Round Block". His design was found in an old sign painters' design book from the early 1900s and has been translated to digital form by Jeff Levine. All of the quirks and charm of hand lettering have remained.

While the inspiration for Prospect Heights JNL may have been a piece of vintage sheet music entitled "My Ohio Lullaby", the name is classically New York. To be precise, it's a neighborhood in the Borough of Brooklyn. Prospect Heights JNL is available in both the regular version (with an engraving line) and a solid (plain) version.

Diamante Robusto Font is my new font, where all the letters came out of this strange shape created without intention of being the inspiration for this new font.

Drop Caps happen. They started off life as decorated initials way back when in the days of illuminated manuscripts. Then printing came and they became the work of the rubricators and then somewhere soon after printing began, at least by the 1490’s, they were printed directly into the text. This then is a collection of over a hundred glyphs from that closing decade of the Incunabula period. All of them are based on examples found in the works printed by Michael Wenssler in Basel. This font also contains a few useful pointing hands and a set of spacing characters.

An elegant new design with just a slight bit of flare. A face which will work for both headlines and text. Its delicate serif gives a bit of class while its swash 's' adds a touch of fun.

Rawhide is a fresh digitization and expansion of a very popular (yet uncredited) early 1970s film type called Yippie, which was commonly used in wild west cartoons and comics. Publishers of Lucky Luke, the famous Belgian comic by Morris, used these bouncy letters for the titling on a few of their soft cover editions, and different variations of it were used throughout the 1970s and 1980s by cartoon classic Looney Tunes and a variety of wild west animations and comics. It slowly disappeared without fanfare when desktop publishing became the norm. Here it is again now for the computer age, available as a high quality font with a complete character set that accommodates more than 20 Latin-based languages. In short, Rawhide comes with an impressive track record, and is a must for any funny cowboy design or off the wall wild west layout. This set of fonts contains a very expanded character set that includes full support for Central, Eastern and Western European languages, as well as Baltic, Turkish, Esperanto, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.

While helping produce a trade magazine years ago, I admired the hand-lettering of the art director -- a woman named Marydale -- and suggested she let me model a font after her penmanship. She agreed and drew out the alphabet, and I launched an old copy of Fontographer and (to shorten a long story) ended up developing my very first digital typeface. Which has since, astonishingly, become famous worldwide. So now the real Marydale gets the mixed blessing of seeing her handwriting (and name) plastered all over the planet. Full release has regular, bold, and black weights.

Alex Kaczun, originally designed BottleKaps for Linotype-Hell, in 1992, as a QuickDraw GX multi-master font series. A few new GX applications, like 'Unicorn', where able to utilize these unique fonts. The GX application allowed the user to adjust weight and proportions, on the fly, including glyph substitution for small capitals, old style figures, swash and alternate endings. The technology was never successfully deployed by Apple, so the individual fonts, 21 styles and variations in all, where sold in the Linotype Font Library as separate Truetype fonts up until 1998. Unfortunately, the fonts collected dust for many years thereafter, but now have been reworked and rejuvenated by Alex in OpenType format for both Mac and PC. 'BottleKaps' is a 'unique', 'playful' and 'decorative' font series. Use it for those bold headlines to stimulate interest and show off your 'unique' individual style.

In the advertising industry, I was often asked to supply the art directors with ideas for a san serif type design that was not the standard Helvetica or Univers. They wanted a fresh new approach, something with generous proportion, like Avant Garde perhaps, but not as uniform in proportions. A font that would lend itself well to wide and long columns of text with lots of leading. So, I rolled up my sleeves and designed a font that meet all their criteria. Contax is the new 'Univers' for the 21st century.

Lemonite (Regular and Expanded) is a self examination in whether, after five years without attempting to design any new fonts, I was still capable of creation. Lemonite is the result, and even though its plain, it showed me I could still work. I have made two of the face free to anyone who wishes to have a look, so please feel free, no obligations, to take them and use them if you have a use. Why so long ? Well, we do age, and with age comes the usual benefits, like Glaucoma and a touch of Arthritis in the old digits, and that's made computer work a little… interesting for me over the past couple of years. An ad in the April 19, 1919 edition of Motion Picture News for the (now lost) silent drama "Josselyn's Wife" featured some wonderfully stylized Art Nouveau hand lettering. Primarily a condensed character set with rounded serifs, there are a number of letters that take liberties in both width and character shape. Adding to this, [mostly vertical] parallel lines are cut through the characters to create a "striped' type of "double engraved' effect. Nidex is a caps-only industrial distressed font, ideal for titles, display and headlines, rough and ready, and coming with all the usual accented characters and an extensive set of punctuation. The misprinted effect is central to the font’s design and is built-in, simplifying the work for posters and flyers, and the example above is made with Regular and Condensed. Upper and Lower Case present 2 different sets of characters, and just a few letters are distinguishably more misprinted. Also there’s a full set of ligatures to make double-letter combinations print two different letters rather than the same one twice, from upper case A to lower case z. The zips contain both OTF and TTF versions - install either OTF or TTF, not both.

Originally published by OurType, Dan Milne’s Tasman has found a new home at Retype. Milne first conceived Tasman as a typeface for newspapers. This influenced the proportions and look of the face considerably: the goal was to keep the personality as warm and playful as possible without losing the credible tone required to deliver all kinds of news. A sturdy, warm type family that is neither mechanical nor fragile. It borrows its name from Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603–1659), a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant who mapped parts of Australia in 1642, including Van Diemen’s Land (now known as Tasmania). Tasman’s primary purpose is an unbiased presentation of information; it strives for neutrality over elegance. Its characters are sturdy and unambiguous, sporting strong serifs, punctuation, and diacritics, as well as generously sized small caps and hybrid figures. Rationalized letterforms give the face enough robustness to withstand the stress of screen applications and laser printing. The figures’ three-quarter x-height makes them considerably larger than traditional oldstyle numerals, yet they still integrate with the lowercase much better than lining figures do. Although initially intended for newspapers, Tasman’s somewhat corporate, objective appearance also makes it an excellent candidate for digital and print magazines, websites, annual reports, and corporate identities. Tasman is a suite of feature-rich OpenType fonts fully equipped to tackle complex, professional typography. Lincoln Electric started its life as an in-house experimental film type Thomas Lincoln drew shortly after concluding his work as part of Herb Lubalin’s famed crew in the late 1960s,. The master alphabet was drawn on illustration boards using pen and ink and press-type lines. The typeface was initially made for use in the branding and promotional material of Lincoln’s new design outfit. This alphabet’s forms are a spin on Bifur, the all-cap deco face designed by Adolphe Mouron (known as Cassandre) in 1929, and published by the Deberny & Peignot foundry in France. Lincoln Electric evolves Cassandre’s idea further by constructing new shapes more in line with minimalist principles rather than art deco geometry — something clearly evident in Lincoln’s minuscules, which exhibit a clear connection to Bauhaus ideas More than 50 years after the typeface’s design, Thomas Lincoln found the original film alphabet tucked away in his archives and brought it over to Canada Type for digital retooling. Font naming is not all that difficult. Take Printout for example. I was busy working on this font, when my niece came over with a poem she needed to have printed. One of her classmates had the same request (they’re writing poems for our national Remembrance Day). As I was printing out these poems, I thought the name Printout would be perfect for the font I was working on. See? It’s not rocket science! Printout is a totally awesome, completely handmade font. I used an almost dried out Japanese brush pen to get the eroded effect. Maybe I should name my next font ‘Dried Out Brush Pen’? I’ll let you know.
