About Ardena: Ardena is a modern sans-serif typeface family. While neutral and clear at first glance, it can be characterized as both pleasant and confident due to its open, rounded forms and vertical terminals. Klothilde is a handwriting font which came to life in one of my doodling sessions (I must admit I still doodle with pen and paper). The idea was to create a font which resembles writing with a quill on paper with exaggerated ball terminals. Sometimes there is too much ink which makes the letters fat and the strokes uneven. The paper soaks the ink resulting in blurred line crossings. The form gets blurry. On the other hand, when the quill runs out of ink the stroke gets thinner looking like the light version of Klothilde. In order to emulate the different looks, I created six fonts with a common skeleton but different appearance which can be altered seamlessly by using the Variable Fonts technology (e.g. in latest Adobe apps or CorelDRAW Graphics Suite) along the Weight and Blurred sliders. But even without, Klothilde can be used even in longer copy. Use it from 18 pt upwards, flush left with tight leading and intersecting ascenders and descenders. Due to extensive manual kerning, it gives your text an even colour. To my knowledge, Klothilde is one of the first script Variable fonts in different weights. No, Klothilde’s letters are not connecting. But I added a whole bunch of connecting ligatures which are simply activated by the ligature feature of your app. Even Microsoft Word can do that. Thus Klothilde comes to life, as it should be expected from a handwriting font. In order to add to variety there are additional glyphs for some critical initial and standalone letters. Repeating letter combinations like nn, mm or rr are avoided by replacing the second letter by an alternative form. All features are activated by the standard ligature feature. Ligatures are available for most European languages, some even in Cyrillic (some special Serbo-Croat letters included and accessible through localization or Style Set 08 features). Romanian comma-accent characters and ligatures are accessible through the OpenType locl feature. For the topping on the cake, I added an alternate ampersand (stylistic set 1) and asterisk (ss04), an alternate Cyrillic b (ss02) and t (ss03), a few fleurons, arrows and a skull (OpenType feature ornm), fractions (frac feature), circled numbers (ss06) and an interrobang (ss07) which result in exactly 900 glyphs in each of the six fonts. There should be enough to play with. Should you be missing a special character, do give me a hint.

FF Signa is a typically Danish typeface, rooted in architectural lettering rather than book typography. Originally designed for signage—hence the name—FF Signa is now a typographic family with three widths. All weights include italics, small caps, and several styles of figures. Because of the quality of this “vernacular-lettering-into-typeface” conversion, FF Signa received a Danish Design Prize in 2002. FF Signa is radically different from most sans serif text typefaces that were published during the 1990s. It neither belongs in the “humanist sans” category, nor is it on the list of typefaces based on 19th-century grotesques. Its concise letterforms and a minimum of detail produce clear and harmonious word images. Yet its proportions are classical, and the underlying geometry has been subtly adjusted in order to create letterforms which are at once interesting, harmonious, and contemporary. These features make FF Signa pleasant for reading, even at very small sizes. The typeface has developed into a versatile family, with Condensed, Extended, and Correspondence versions. Later on Signa Serif, Stencil variants and a Signa Slab family added even more versatility. The resulting FF Signa type system may be used for corporate identities, brochures, magazines, communication, books, and on-screen publications.

Paperside: Neither Papyrus nor SSI Countryside. Inspired in some ways by the Papyrus form, but untextured and smoother, with the dimensions and proportions more open, like that of Countryside SSi, with its larger easily readable lowercase body, and more consistent, shorter stems. Paperside has an open scripted feel which is pleasing on the eye and easy to read. Paperside can enhance the first letter of most sentences automatically, and changes other letters to suit their position within words, and the letters they appear beside. Now comes in 5 weights plus italic. For best results, use this ‘smart font’ with Contextual Ligatures turned on. Mulitiple Stylistic Alternatives are included. Inspiration for this font came from two other fonts. Papyrus: was designed by Chris Costello and created in 1982, it is a hand-drawn textured typeface, emulating texts written in biblical times. One of the most used (and misused) fonts of all times. Owned by Letraset, and currently published by the Internation Typeface Corporating (ITC). Countryside SSi: The serif font of an unknown designer, is currently licensed by Southern Software Inc. The Hybi5 font family can be described as a “crossover” between Antiqua, Grotesque and Brushscript with characteristics from all of this genres. My aim was to design friendly and versatile fonts, which can be used for headlines or slogans as well as for some longer texts. To make the fonts useful for as many languages as possible, I added a lot of exotic accents. All styles contain the whole “Adobe Latin 3 (CE)” character set plus a few letters from “Adobe Latin 4”. A lot of ligatures prettify the look of the fonts. Alternate uppercase letters in the script style might do the same. If you are a professional designer, you will surely appreciate the thousands of kerning pairs within each style, which will make your work easier. I recommend to set Kerning to “metric” and spacing to “zero” in your layout app. Back in 2015 I worked on the first sketches of “Hybi5” using Adobe Illustrator. “Fontself Maker”, an extension for Illustrator, was used to convert the drawings into font-files. This tool can only create “OTF” font files. For this reason there are no “TTF” versions. It’s not the first font I have ever made, but the first to be distributed commercially.

We wanted to start with Caslon and then transform it into an editorial typeface, hence the increase of the x-height and the radical reduction of the ascenders and descenders. Despite the Display, Headline and Text fonts we also wanted to make a single weight Poster version with, inspired by the mechanical script introduced in the Double-Pica Script, to be used in magazines or as a complementary display typeface.

Brda originally designed by the Polish designer Franciszek Otto for the Powiat weekly newspaper. Powiat needed a new, dynamically drawn sans serif for its headlines, and Otto's Brda fit the bill. Combining traditional Grotesk letterforms with witty subtleties, like the notched-joint seen in the capital G, Brda displays a novel design that works best when set large. The typeface is named after the Brda river, which runs through Bydgoszcz, Poland, the city where Powiat is published. The Brda family includes three weights, each with a companion italic: Regular, Bold, and Extra Bold. The Brda family's Extra Bold weight was one of the winners selected in the 2003 International Type Design Contest, sponsored by Linotype GmbH. Franciszek Otto also teaches graphic design at the Secondary Art School in Bydgoszcz, where his typefaces rank among the students' favorites.

Gutter Pigeon is not your every-day Ransom-kind-of-font! The prices of making it was really simple: I only used my phone and computer. I took pictures of letter from newspapers, magazines, bookcovers, candybars, movieposters, roadsigns, etc. In the beginning, It was easy to find new letters. But as I had the initial letters, it became quite a search for the missing letters. Not a hard job, you may think - but this font has 8 different versions of each letter! That's 26 lowercase glyphs and 26 uppercase glyphs...8 times! That's more than 400 glyphs! And on top of that comes numbers and punctuation! Go crazy with Gutter Pigeon! This steam era typeface, created by Gustav Schroeder in 1884, found popular use on soap box labels and tobacco tins during its initial release. Then, later, a successful and stout revival of Gustav's face, named Othello, was carried out by Morris Fuller Benton in 1934, and the typeface's appeal widened to include items such as broadside posters featuring Boris Karloff's Frankenstein. After metal gave way to film type, Gustav's creation experienced a brief fashion moment in the 1960's, but then disappeared entirely, never re-surfacing as a full digital typeface. With the release of Bathysphere, the typeface comes full circle, having been completely redrawn from scratch using Gustav's original specimens. The new extended language support establishes the typeface firmly in the modern era, while Bathysphere's refinement of subtle blunt corners restores a deep-sea grace to this iron giant.

We wanted to make an ultra-thin, tall font with a rough, hand-drawn look and ended up with more than we bargained for. To get the font we wanted we started by developing a source font for the basic letter shapes and we ended up with a whole bunch of variations of the basic style. Thus was born the new Ducatus family of fonts, starting with Ducatus Light which developed into the Medium and Heavy versions, and the Medium weight was ultimately used as the basis for the Ducatus Rough font, which was the goal of the project in the first place. Ducatus Rough was created by modifying Ducatus Medium in Photoshop using Gallery Effects and several other filter packages, and then redoing the outlines from scratch in Fontographer. A lot of work, but the result is just what we wanted.

Dorset marks Léon Hugues first script typeface and first release with the Positype Flourish label. Built crosscurrent to a strict revival or calligraphic digitization, Dorset’s aim was to understand how a font could interact with various calligraphic influences in a single execution and how that interpretation by Léon would lead to new, exclusive design choices. The design purposely chose to connect various gestures from Spencerian handwriting and copperplate calligraphy and meld that with his initial experiments with fine, flat nibs.
