The first Grippo sketches were done in the 1980s, but only now does it see the light of day as a complete series of interchangeable, layerable fonts. The brand marking on a vintage wooden shipping case for bottles of Mission Naturally Good Orange Soda inspired Beverage Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Mission was a popular soda in California from about 1929 through 1970.

The April 8, 1932 issue of The Film Daily ran an ad for a film entitled "The Sin of Lena Rivers". Hand lettered in a block style of chamfered characters, it is reminiscent of the 1920s, but still carries a touch of Art Deco influences with the thinner and extended horizontal strokes of the E, F and H. This retro sans serif design is now available digitally as Evil Ways JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Cowboy Burt was once a cowboy, but now he's a carnie at who runs the tilt-a -whirl. This hand drawn font was designed for use in a skate-punk layout, but will be quite at home in the old west, the circus, or underground cartoons. Samuel Welo was a sign painter who had published in the 1920s and again in 1960 his “Studio Handbook – Letter and Design for Artists and Advertisers”, prolifically hand lettering all of the type style examples within the pages of the publication. In 1930 Welo also published “Lettering - Practical and Foreign”. From this book comes a thick-and-thin hand lettered Art Deco alphabet – now available digitally as Sightseeing Tour JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Banbury is a Neo Classical display font available in two versions. Broad line weights paired with hairline serifs create a striking contrast for an elegant look. Italic lowercase characters contain more rounded letterforms and feature shaved off lower serifs. This vintage inspired family would work nicely in a luxury logo, movie poster, or pub menu. The Wright-Regan Instrument Company (Wrico) was one of the leading manufacturers of lettering templates for many years. Aside from their own line of products, they also did custom manufacturing. A series of lettering guides called “Mimeostyle” for the A. B. Dick Company of Chicago (produced for use in making mimeograph machine printing stencils) featured an art Deco squared letter design with rounded corners. This is now available digitally as Template Sans JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

A vintage piece of sheet music for "Waitin' at the Gate for Katy" (from the 1934 movie "Bottoms Up") provided the hand-lettered, Western-influenced lettering which is now available as Badlands JNL. Some of the characters originally had overly-thick vertical strokes which stood out from the rest of the letters, so they were "standardized" in order to provide a more aesthetically pleasing overall design. Available in both regular and oblique versions to fit your design needs.

Ramsey is stout and warm, rectangular with rounded edges, and dynamic with swift cuts. Ranging from thin and condensed to extended and black, Ramsey has seen applications in sports teams to movie titles and even art magazines. Through the years, Ramsey has proven itself to be a true workhorse of a font. This version has a lot of minor updates to the form and spacing, and we now see an extended family to complete it’s legacy. A true workhorse.

Sheet music for the title song from the 1933 Jean Harlow-Clark Gable film "Hold Your Man" has the movie title hand lettered in a dual line sans serif with Art Deco influences. This is now available as Dual Line Deco, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. The song itself was written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, whose vast catalog of musical compositions was tapped for the 1952 musical classic "Singing in the Rain".

Soma is inspired by the Soma cube and the work of MC Escher. The font uses geometric patterns to create “impossible” glyphs. Some can be easily imagined; others bend the mind. Many alternate versions of glyphs have been provided for additional design possibilities. This is my 2nd most popular font at Dafont with over 50,000 downloads. The original set was 26 basic characters (A-Z), repeated for uppercase and lowercase. Now the set is almost 300 glyphs.

Victualia - casual, hand drawn (Wacom, illustrator) brush font. "Ligatures" have been created for some double letters to enhance the illusion of handwritten text. (TT, tt, ff, oo, OO, mm, MM, ll & LL - open type version of the font and open type compatible layout application required). Victualia was initially created in 2005 as part of a course that I attended to At Berghs , but has now been given a face lift as well as a full set of special characters.

The image of a set of vintage French tin stencils spotted online was the starting point in designing Freight Yard Stencil JNL. A more traditional ‘B’ and ‘R’ replaces the original characters (which looked kind of awkward due to extra ‘stencil breaks’ within the letters). However, there are a few interesting variants in other characters to set the design apart from similar stencil fonts. Work Yard Stencil JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A photo of the now closed [circa-1953] Lowell Municipal Pool (at 1601 N. 28th St.) in Boise, Idaho shows the words “Municipal Pool” formed into the cement of the entrance to the above-ground swimming facility. Both the lettering and building entrance designs harken back to the Art Deco era and the sign features stencil-like characters. This inspired a typeface aptly named Municipal Pool JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Fitz Sans SRF was contributed to the Stella Roberts Fonts project by graphic designer Matt Yow after receiving word of the project from Ray Larabie of Typodermic Fonts. A light, attractive text face, Fitz Sans SRF also lends itself well to headlines and titles. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions. The inspiration for this proto-Art Nouveau typeface showed up in the 1887 type specimen book of Farmer, Little & Co. under the name Vassar. Its bold, sinuous curves, which take unexpected turns now and then, make it the perfect choice when you want to command attention...in a dignified, Ivy League kind of way, of course. All versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Auge Unicase is a sans serif display font, extra-condensed, with a unicase style. It is a geometric and very modular font that has a "modern-vintage" feeling. It is good for titles and short texts. Auge Unicase has a set of alternates, accessible by contextual alternates and stylistic set. It was designed following the Underware Latin Plus character set, supporting 219 Latin based languages (see https://underware.nl/latin_plus/languages/). Version 1.1 now has Cyrillic support and 757 glyphs.

Cary Grant was one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, playing romantic leads, dramatic parts and showing off his impeccable timing in screwball comedies. A perfect example of this is Frank Capra’s “Arsenic and Old Lace” from 1942. The movie trailer for the film had the title hand lettered in a playful and casual slab serif style, with varying character shapes and weights. This is now available as Screwball Comedy JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Mekon is a modern heavyweight typeface digitised and expanded from Peter Steiners Black Body (1973). Retro style Pacman shapes are combined with small keyhole counters to create a bold and witty font ideal for apparel, books, t-shirts and posters. Mekon is now available as version 2.0 (2021); the remastered version meets higher technical standards that modern-day users demand. Buinton Rough is roughed up version of Buinton. There are three versions with increasing distress level. Buinton Rough is a script typeface with noble and vintage looks. It has serifs at the beginnings of the strokes, swash capitals and formal design. Buinton Rough has lots of alternate characters, swashes and ligatures. It has also a bunch of tails with different shapes and widths to give the vintage logotype or sports look to your design. These alternates makes Buinton Rough very versatile. You can design beautiful, elegant and diverse typographic elements with it. It’s well suited for logos, lettering artwork, t-shirt designs, editorial illustrations to name a few.

Blacketor came about from hand lettering I had done for my own personal use several years ago. It remained unfinished until now. I was going for a more traditional serif font but in the process of play various versions came about while playing with the serifs, in an attempt to be slightly different. Many versions fell to the wayside as I learned more about what didn’t work than what did. What came about was a clean font with large open counters and short ascenders for an easy read. All caps works well for a bold but not shouty statement. A good font for Headlines and callouts as well as logotypes.

I am not sure if there is such a thing as a Sunday Fish. But anyway, now you have a font with that name! My idea of a Sunday Fish is a lazy, goofy and kinda laid back one. One you'd like to play around with, and a friend for life - not that kind of fish that ends up on your plate! :) Sunday Fish has massive language support and 4 different versions of each lowercase letter, and these automatically cycle as you type! It comes in 4 different layered versions, which works well together - just play around with the layers and your favourite colours!

Akira Kobayashi modified his Eurostile Next design into a fun unicase version. Ascenders and descenders have been traded in for alternates of letters that all share the same height. The effect is similar to using all caps, although this is quite a bit more quirky. For example, letters like the lowercase a and e are now the same height as their capital versions and the lowercase y has been raised to fit between the baseline and top height. Odd relationships such as these give Eurostile Unicase a fresh and funky feeling. Try using it for headlines and titles, then use Eurostile Next for the body text!

The original design came from Berthold Herold typeface, designed by Hermann Hoffmann during 1913 (Art Nouveau style) in Germany. This project started from flyer printed during 1947 with movable type, the specimen was scanned as a source to development some of the uppercase letterforms. However the most unusual and tricky element from this sample is the leg from the uppercase (R) which is different from the original Herold design, until now I didn’t found where this version originally came from. This stencil typeface only contain the bold weight, but there are also available other versions without stencil cuts, like Nouveau LX and Nouveau LX Expanded.

Gold Standard got its start from a few letters found on an old Gold Certificate from 1882. From those few letters spelling out the word GOLD, the rest of the alphabet was designed to match. The lowercase design was based on lettering found on an old silver certificate from approximately the same year.

Gerard Unger developed this newspaper font between 1984 and 1987 for Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Hell GmbH, Kiel. He was mainly influenced by William A. Dwiggins (1880-1956), the typographic consultant of Mergenthaler Linotype, who started to develop more legible, alternative fonts for newspaper printing as early as 1930. Swift was named after the fast flying bird. Austere and concise, firm and original, Swift is suited for almost any purpose. Swift has been specially developed to sustain a maximum of quality and readability when used in unfavorable print and display processes, e.g. newspapers, laser printing and low resolution screens. Its robust, yet elegant serifs and its large x-height provide an undeniable distinction to the typeface, making it suitable for corporate ID and advertising purposes as well. Swift 2.0 family was designed in 1995. It's an improved version with technical and aesthetic enhancements and new family members. The Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2003 by Tagir Safayev. Abdo Rajab is the second version of the font FS Rajab which was designed by the type designer Abdulsamiea Rajab Salem for Future Soft company fonts. It is a leading company in Arabization field and producing the Arabic and Islamic programs beside the children programs. This font appeared between 1998 and 2000. In this version there were a lot of adjustments to keep the font in its spirit and uniformity between the various characters. Also added some new characters, which gave him another beautiful addition to be used in both title and text designs. Three weights (Regular, light and bold) have been created. Then the font was converted to OpenType to support Arabic, Persian and Urdu to be compatible with the various operation systems and modern software. The combination of modern Kufi and Naskh styles and varying between straight and curved parts made it a beautiful typeface appropriate to the titles and text, and able to meet the desire of the user in the design of ads and modern designs of various types of audio and visual.

Like a lovechild of American Typewriter and Cooper Black, typewritten in melted chocolate, this is Margot. A bold single weight display typeface in roman and italic styles, Margot is boisterous but cuddly; warm but impactful. Margot comes fully loaded with a bunch of esoteric dingbats (grouped in the ornament feature), four figure styles (proportional- and tabular- lining, and proportional- and tabular- oldstyle), a spattering of swash capitals (K, Q and R), stylistic alternates and one discretionary gi ligature in the Roman. Home Style is a revival of a very old font previously thought to have been designed by Joseph Gillé in or around the year 1820, however recent evidence from France suggests that an artist by the name of Silvestre from the same time period may be the true designer of this font. You may have seen this font in the past under the names of Circus, Roma, Madame and Gillé Classic. Originally designed in France, this very decorative font was only available in uppercase including numbers. Today this font has been re-mastered and updated with the addition of a newly designed lowercase set of letters. Home Style with its diagonal or cast shadow lines breaks away from the original design which has squared off shadows. Although Wink is inspired by traditional calligraphic flourishes, its modern twist makes it elegant and simple at the same time. It’s not  completely a brush type but it has been created with the same calligraphy base Joluvian usually works with. Wink also has a caps version with the same style of the script.
