Dear Dolores has had its name from the latin word dolorem, meaning sorrow or grief. When I started working on this display font I found myself trying it out using the latin requiem texts. The capitals somehow sat well with the monumental and solemn words of mourning. The broken hairlines suggested stone cuttings where the fine details had been worn down and obliterated over time and it felt at home in a churchyard or in a monument park. Adding lowercase gave the font a more personal and friendly appearance and opened up new possibilities for use. The name itself is a fictional message to someone long missed or perhaps lost too soon. Dear Dolores comes in a cut and an uncut version where the fine details are left intact. Both are excellent for headlines or memorable quotes.

The Octa fonts are primarily intended for heading, display and decorative use. Noir et Blanc began as a proposed logo for a new Broadway production of Moulin Rouge and ended up as a challenge to find how bold a stroke weight could still be beautifully legible. Now that it is complete, we hope it will have the chance to become noir et blanc et rouge partout.

Inside the book “New Zanerian Alphabets” (1900) by C.P. Zaner is a set of thin monoline letters and numbers along with many chamfered characters offered as alternates to the main design. This simple, but effective type style has been redrawn digitally and is now available as Apprentice Signwriter JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Best Bet JNL is a hybrid approach in reinterpreting the classic display font Beton. Using examples of the condensed version found on old sheet music, redesigning a few additional characters and melding them with slightly condensed versions of numbers from the standard weight, Best Bet JNL offers an interesting new version to an old favorite.

A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster advertising an exhibit of New Jersey area posters had its main lettering rendered in a very condensed hand lettered interpretation of the ever-popular Futura Black Art Deco style. This has now been re-drawn and digitized as Art Event JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

It was our initial intention to develop a suitable lowercase for Les Usherwood's Elston typeface, based on a few characters from an old German typeface called Hermes Grotesque (Woellmer, Berlin). The new design became Creighton. Then, for good measure we decided to experiment with a 'crisper version' of this design; the result is 'Megaphone'.

Halloween lends itself to graphic images: witches, ghosts, bats, jack-o'lanterns and haunted houses. When we think of a haunted house, we generally think of a large, abandoned, derelict Victorian wood-frame house. The style is usually Second Empire or Queen Anne. There tends to be a lot of decoration. There is usually a porch or two with decorative spindle work. There is probably a tower, either square with a mansard roof such as one might see in Paris or round with a conical roof borrowed from a Loire Valley chateau. These houses were generally built in the United States between 1860 and 1900, products of the exuberance of a time before income tax. It took at least three servants to maintain such a house and was very expensive. Few can afford them today. That is why so many were converted to professional offices, multi-family dwellings or simply abandoned. HAUNTED HOUSE is our typographical contribution to Halloween. Based on our font PETRARKA ML, it features decorative capitol letters that utilize the silhouette of a Second Empire style house complete with a dead tree and a full moon. The font includes 8 ornaments suitable for flyers and party invitations. Revision 2.000 eliminates dual encoding, harmonizes metrics, adds new glyphs, and adds open type features. When there is no picture of a "most wanted" or "Missing Persons", photofit pictures are used. Once drawn by hand, they are now more and more substituted by photomontage. Sometimes different combinations of possible looks are attributed to a same person. This new virtual image finds itself soon in thousands of archives and data bases. Anyone can easily have access to those images by internet. To increase security and help track criminals, unknown death (Mr. Smith) or lost and kidnapped people, government asks citizen to help search those people. "Mr. J. Smith" is a font family consisting of 4 portrait-fonts and one letter-fonts. The portrait font "Mr. J. Smith" is a portrait-construction-kit. By layering the fonts "Head", "Eye", "Nose", "Mouth" one over the other, you can design over 7 million different faces. The font "Wanted" gives you the possibility to join names and registration numbers to the unknown or most wanted persons. What is nice about this font is the "surprise moment". Just write a word , "security" e.g., and you will get a nice shot of 8 different characters!

Milligan is named in honor of the late Spike Milligan, a wonderful comedian who (amongst many other things) wrote and start in the Goon Show. It's a jolly, boisterous display Roman which can bring a sense of liveliness and fun to any project where it's used.

Citadel Script is based on script handwriting and engraving used in formal announcements and invitations. The Citadel Script font lends itself to typesetting in which an elegant mood is desired. As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. For my first font, I completed a simple monospaced font, Debug, based on my own handwriting. Mickey Mono is much more ambitious: I wanted a humanist design - something with organic curves. It had to be clean and fresh. It had to have the advantages of Debug, like distinctive numerals (to distinguish between 8 and 3) and huge punctuation characters (so I could read complicated Perl one liners). Mickey Mono would be a good friend to me as I struggled through difficult coding tasks. It has a wide range of Latin Extended characters and diacritics, so it can speak French, Portuguese, and Ruby. Akagi started as a rough sketch while on a really long plane ride to Tokyo in 2007. I wanted to develop a sans that was a complete departure from my successful Aaux Pro (now Aaux Next) sans serif family. Whereas Aaux and its siblings are rather unforgiving and stark in their presentation, I wanted this new sans serif to "smile" at you when it's on the page. When the plane landed and I realized I did not sleep through the 15 hour trip, my brain shut off, the laptop closed and I hopped in the car to the hotel—forgetting the "new sans" folder on my desktop. Fast forward a few months and I found myself seeing a lot of crisp, rigid, robot-like sans serif typefaces everywhere... I enjoy these new crop of faces but wanted to see something "friendlier" and remembered my earlier sketch work. The groundwork was there screaming at me to complete and Akagi arose from the ashes. To be truly satisfied with it personally, a great deal of time was spent trying to create a harmony between line and curve in an attempt to show that you can be crisp, clean and legible and still keep some personality. The Light and Fat weights (regular and italic) are my favorites and I hope to see them as the workhorses of the typeface.
