She did not live to experience her breakthrough as a poet, but today she is considered one of the pioneers of literary modernity – the American lyricist Emily Dickinson (1830–1886). She left behind a life’s work of manuscripts on scraps of paper, note pads and letters – and a last wish, that these were to be burned. Emily’s younger sister Lavinia did not fulfill her wish – and thus preserved the ingenious manuscript-objects for posterity. For Julia Sysmäläinen, designer of the award winning Kafka type family FF Mister K, Dickinson’s manuscripts were an inspiration and a source for creating her new typeface “Emily In White”. Emily In White – named after Emily Dickinson’s preference for white clothes – captures the most filigree letterforms of the poet’s multifaceted writing style. Jana Nikolic was finishing her degree program at the Faculty of Applied Arts, in Belgrade, with a final project that would combine her two majors: type and book design. Three stories from William Saroyan's My Name Is Aram would provide the text for the book, to be set in a typeface that Nikolic would design. Nikolic knew something special was happening the moment she put pen to paper. The letters just emerged," she recalls. "I started to explore a few new pens and found one I loved. I was able to make its tip bend with pressure." Like the family Saroyan writes about, the design flowing from Nikolic's pen would be simple but a little quirky. "When there were a whole bunch of little black letters around me," continues Nikolic, "I saw that this was going to be a very interesting typeface family." Nikolic drew Latin and Cyrillic letters, lowercase and capital letters, wide letters and narrow letters. She was surprised at how quickly and easily the design came. "There were no badly written letters," she says. "I hardly had to rework them and they fit together remarkably well." ITC Aram's standard character complement consists of one set of lowercase letters and two sets of capitals: one narrow and the other wide. The wide caps can be used with the standard lowercase, or mixed with the narrow caps for a variation on "cap and small cap" copy. Macaroni Sans evolved from our search for an extended font family consisting of a range of weights in both uprights and obliques, with a contemporary appeal. The desired character was to be sympathetic with a range of high-tech consumer products so a friendly, soft approach was called for. The resulting mix of geometric shape, rounded terminals, subtle italic angle of just six degrees and a few quirky stroke endings met with an enthusiastic response. As its subject product line exhibits brilliant color and imagery, a style was called for that conveyed contemporary appeal and readability but would not compete with the savvy products. We arrived at a clean, modern, sociable look that would suit a broad subject field in either text, semi display or signage. Its simple lines and monoline strokes fit well with logo usage or screaming posters, enhancing letterheads or websites, for foodstuffs to autos, insurance to swimming pools, lawfirms to babyfood. Rounded types have been around (pardon the pun) for centuries; numerous examples can be seen on old wood type posters, which in a small way prompted the name: in fashion Macaroni was a term used in mid-eighteenth century Europe to describe a dandy, a chap who displayed flamboyance in dress and hairstyle and spoke outlandishly or in an effeminate manner. Hence the term macaronic verse.

Cabo Soft is the 2.0 version of our original Cabo Rounded Typeface, created back in 2015. With this new version, Cabo Soft, we have brought multiple upgrades and updates compared with the original version. Some of those consist in the addition of more glyphs and accents, alternate designs for many of the glyphs (including an alternate for @, #, some of the numbers and more), and most importantly, we have done a slight update in the design of the letters, which we'll give more details in the following paragraphs. The main style and thought behind our Cabo fonts has always been the rounded corners and the soft and welcoming vibe that it gives. It's friendly and familiar, but also modern and slightly elegant, especially the Thin and Light styles. With Cabo Soft we have worked on adding an extra touch to the design of the letters by working on the termination edges of each letter. If Cabo Rounded had an exact round termination for each letter, with Cabo Soft we have developed a unique non-equally rounded shape that is applied to all types of terminations for each letter. This new design approach makes it have a more clean style, a more modern and unique look, but it also gives stylish, exclusivist and elegant vibes, while still being friendly and familiar. Thanks to it's variety in weights and styles, you can use Cabo Soft in almost any design project. It works well with headlines and paragraphs, it's a perfect match for logo design and branding, but can also do wonders in videos, signage and many other elements. The typeface covers most likely the entire Latin Alphabet, it comes with multiple design alternates for many of the letters, glyphs and numbers, with accents applied for all of the available alternates. Life’s always more fun when you reverse the stress. The same goes for the new member of the Cabrito family. Cabrito itself is a recently developed slab serif made for the kid’s book The Clothes Letters Wear. Cabrito proved to be more popular than I thought, and I promised I would create an inverted style for this new addition to the font world--a variant that would pair well with the original or even stand well on its own. And so now, here it is. Cabrito Inverto, which features the reversed stress of the strokes from a font’s “normal” traits. Inverted stress fonts are most often associated with cowboys and the Old West. The inverted stress gives it a happy-go-lucky appearance, not to be taken too seriously. It’s a pleasantly rounded, not-so-strictly geometric typeface with handwriting-inspired forms. Whew, that’s a mouthful! Inverto’s bundle of alternates is accessible in any OpenType-enabled program. It contains a workforce of alternates, swashes, and alternate titling caps to embellish the font. Also bundled are swash alternates, aged design and style figures, and compact caps. Jim Rimmer’s first typeface was originally published in 1970 as a basic film type alphabet through a small, independent type house in central California. Its sources of influence (now calligraphic type standards by Dair, Goudy and Zapf) are ones that remained with Jim for the rest of his career. If you squint at Totemic in just the right way, you can see some recognizable themes Jim would later flesh out and make his own in later works throughout his career as a type designer and printer. Totemic is now available for the first time as a digital font, of the refined and expanded kind now expected from Canada Type. It comes with quite a few standard advanced typography features: Small caps, caps-to-small-caps, automatic fractions and standard ligatures, stylistic alternate sets, six kinds of figures, case-sensitive forms, and extended Latin language support.
