In many aspects, built in a traditional way. Still, some modern details have been implemented which classic designs sometimes lack. The prime goal was to make a strong text font for books and longer texts in general. This fact does not exclude the possibilites for use elsewhere. Throughout history existing designs have often been the source of inspiration for newer ones. Delicato is no exception and looking closely, similarities can be found in the lowercase of Jeremy Tankard’s Enigma and the stems of Petr van Blokland’s Proforma. The goal is to respect these sources and turn the the typeface into something new with a unique and personal touch. Most text faces carry a basic set of weights like Regular, Italic, Bold and Small Caps. MRF wanted to expand that a little bit further and added a Medium, Alternates and a set of Ornaments to make the family complete and versatile.

It took the Italian designer Antonio Pace more than five years to create Linotype Gianotten™, a successful new interpretation of the classic Bodoni types. To re-draw the 200-year-old characters for the world of modern digital technology, Pace studied Giambattista Bodoni's original punches at the Bodoni Museum in Parma. He felt that previous Bodoni interpretations were not well suited for body texts, so he focused his study of Bodoni's "Manuale Typografico" on the types made specifically for text sizes. Consequently, his Bodoni has strong hairlines, rounded transitions and shorter, fluted serifs - elements that help to achieve readability by providing an overall tranquil effect. This contemporary, highly readable family is an excellent choice for text settings in books, newspapers, and magazines. Incidentally, the name Gianotten has nothing to do with Bodoni, but was chosen by Pace and Linotype to honor Dutch typographer, Henk W. J. Gianotten."

In 1932, Xanti Schawinsky (1904?1979) designed an alphabet that combines two styles: a neo-classic stroke contrast paired with characteristics of stencil lettering. This mix is a child of its time and seems to reflect the Swiss and Italian biography of Schawinski. Luca Pellegrini took on the modern look and re-drew the letterforms, interrupted by subtle spaces where thick and thin strokes meet. Although Schawinsky had already designed a complete alphabet and figures in the early 1930s, Pellegrini took the character set to another level, adding currency signs, mathematical symbols and all kinds of punctuation ? anything needed to set more than just headlines. Xants is a blend of Swiss elegance and exclusiveness with Italian charm and imperfection, a combination that never gets old.

England's own Sean Phillips wanted a lettering font to suit his distinctive work with Joe Casey on WILDCATS -- and we gave it to him! Hoosier Daddy is based on Foundry Type samples from various mid-19th century specimen books. This shaded slab serif was made by conforming several different cuts of the styles, filling out the character set, and adding a few contemporary touches for freshness. This is a display face. Use it big.

Aside from his 1920s and 1960 editions of Sam Welo’s “Studio Handbook – Letter and Design for Artists and Advertisers”, Welo also published “Lettering - Practical and Foreign” in 1930. A monoline Art Deco Alphabet from that book is now available digitally as Ladies Wear JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

In their book "Lettering of Today" by W. Ben and Ed C. Hunt, an Art Deco "thick and thin" alphabet with some stylized characters (which leaned a lot toward a calligraphic style) stood out from the rest. This is now available as Stylized Deco JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Carl Holmes, in his wonderful book on old lettering styles, pays tribute to this uniquely American design. Faintly reminiscent of the lettering of Fred G. Cooper, California Poster Bold is at times wildly exaggerated and boisterous. Letters appear to be inflated and loopy. Wedge’ is the outcome of a search for the essence of a formal alphabet for text — for 26 letters of the simplest form consistent with ease of reading.. Noted New Zealand architect Bruce Rotherham (1926–2004) was inspired by Herbert Bayer’s ‘universal alphabet’ created at the Bauhaus in 1927. While he admired Bayer’s pure geometry, Rotherham felt it was ‘virtually unreadable’. The Bauhaus-inspired inclination for architectural publications to use sans serif faces provoked Rotherham to consider how a readable Roman book face might be approached using some of Bayer’s same principles of simplification, but also retracing the evolution and use of the Roman form in an analytic manner. The Wedge alphabet was started in 1947 when Rotherham was an architecture student at the University of Auckland. It was worked on and refined over several decades but never commercially released, until now. Over sixty years after it was first conceived, Wedge is available from P22.
