In the early days of PostScript fonts, I designed a font of leaves called XLeafMeAlone. In 2006 I decided to revisit this topic and the result was two sets of new leaf fonts: MapleOaks and MoreLeaves. MapleOaks contains almost 100 images of maple, oak, and sycamore leaves, and MoreLeaves has almost 100 images of leaves of various other species. There are four MapleOak fonts. They have identical images; only the orientation of the images is different. In MapleOaksUR the tips of the leaves point to the upper right, in MapleOaksDR the tips point down to the right, etc.

Bacterio is a typeface I designed for this hulk of a friend of mine who is a kitchen designer. He is huge but has a very delicate feeling for form. One day he said he was trying out something new and if I couldn't make a font for him. Then he showed me the surface design, a hard-plastic covered multilayered wood. The surface design was called "Bacteria" and it looked just like that, only in multicolors. Well here is "Bacterio" the font that looks just like that surface of my hulky friend. About 15 years later, I was sifting through some of my old art files and found a "photostat" of the entire character set... a truly a magnificent archeological discovery. When Baka and Baka Too did very well commercially (Baka was named the Best Cursive Rough Script in 2005), I shied away from doing rough, handwritten scripts in fear as being seen as a one-trick-pony. A few years have passed and some early sumi-e brush ‘doodles’ kept appealing to me. I initially thought this new font would just fall under the Baka mantle and just become a new sibling, but as brush hit paper over and over again, the letters took on a different personality from Baka. This new font was turning out to be far more expressive, smooth and rough, tasty but sticky. This dichotomy demanded a new name. The rough and smooth texture suggested the name Fugu—oddly delicate while rough and functional.

Yalla PRO was inspired during a trip Mateusz Machalski took to Cairo (Egypt). The vast array of strong Arabic headline type, geometric forms working in interesting ways and contrasting with smooth, calligraphic details fed the design. Due to the same proportions and heights, Yalla works great together with Afronaut. Yalla was extended in 2024 by Mateusz Machalski & Małgorzata Bartosik with new weights.
