Alf Becker was a talented sign writer and a prolific contributor of unique alphabets to Signs of the Times magazine. More than one hundred of his designs were showcased in monthly installments with each new issue of the publication. Beginning in January, 1932, Becker, at the request of then-editor E. Thomas Kelly, supplied SIGNS of the Times magazine’s new Art and Design section with an alphabet a month, a project predicted to last only two years. Misjudging the popularity of the “series”, it instead ran for 27 years, ending finally two months before Becker’s death in 1959, for a grand total of 320 alphabets, a nearly perfect, uninterrupted run. In late 1941, almost ten years after the first alphabet was published, 100 of those alphabets were compiled and published in bookform under the title, “100 Alphabets”, by Alf R. Becker. And so, as published in August, 1937, The Fontry presents the truly "modern" version of Becker’s 187th alphabet, Moderne Caps, complete with OpenType features and Central European language support.

When creating the font, I was inspired by the various names of musical groups and sci-fi movies. I took the hourglass shape as a basis and added various serifs to it, hence the name of my font appeared - Klepsydra, as in the Greek hourglass. This style has an abbreviation - "Z". I will develop this font family and will add new styles, as well as characters.

Modesto Initials had existed as a single font for several years. I recently added a fill font to put color in the Inlines. The Inline font still works by itself. The Fill font works alone too, as an ultra Modesto on steroids. They work best together. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. Originally ZionTrain was built as a (probably first in Cyrillic!) navigation typeface for the Kharkiv identity project and Kharkiv subway and airport navigation systems. We wanted comprehensible, distinctive letterforms, that can help everybody on the way from Babylon to Zion. The project was used in Kharkiv promotion at homeland and abroad, but was rejected by the new government. As a corporate typeface it was used for a few cultural projects. Now it is equipped with Slavic Cyrillic and Monotonic Greek and has special Stencil faces especially for low-budget navigations (don't forget to get your own Stencil Medium for free!).
