I always admired the beauty of Gothic letters, but lamented their low readability. The revivals of Gothic faces are beautiful, but they revive everything, including the traits that prevent readability. Blackletters are fine in ads and titles, but can’t be used in long texts (like books on Middle Ages, Medieval romances etc) where they would be the perfect historical choice. And I wanted to change this scenario. With Giureska, instead of taking one particular face to revive, I chose the best traits from many Gothic faces, i.e. the forms that were pleasant to look and easy to read. For the ‘small caps’, I studied uncial scripts and made a similar selection, adapting everything to make a unified font. With three weights, true italics and the uncials, Giureska can endure a variety of projects, bringing the appeal of Middle Ages much beyond the cover.

Cal Roman Black is one more font from the PKG “Cal” (Calligraphic) group. This time for calligraphic sketches we used a wide brush instead of the iron pen. Instead of minuscule letters, there are Small Caps (which are almost the same weight as capitals). There was an intention to keep the spacing as small as possible, because of that, there is no obvious difference in the stroke thickness of the capitals and the lowercase capital letters. The difference in height is only one-third of the brush-width. Cal Roman Black font is rhythmic, informal, dark and hefty... romantic and strong at the same time (just like Ferdinand). As such, this font is widely used in the typographic creation of shorter and closely packed text forms such as magazine headlines, brochures and book covers, t-shirt designs, logos, posters, movie spots, banners...

Mezalia is a one of a kind typeface. Its shapes were strongly influenced by bastarda scripts of high medieval times. Unlike most fonts sharing similar origin, Mezalia is not just another blackletter but a fully functional text typeface, blending medieval poise and character with modern sensibilities. Stroke widths, imitating a broad nibbed pen of a scribe, fluctuate constantly giving paragraphs a characteristic vibrating texture. ITC Élan combines a gothic simplicity with elegance in a distinctive yet subtle typeface design. These four sets are based on the elegant and beautiful work of the German graphic designer Emil Rudolf Weiss. The initials were made to complement Weiss’ text fonts and were cast in the 1920s by the Bauer Type Foundry of Frankfurt. This classified version of Monkton, with its expanded proportions and extended serifs can be used at small sizes for classified advertising, newspaper text or larger displays. Its semi-medium weight (heavier than Book weight) makes it robust to be legible when smaller and cope with various printing methods. The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters.
