Pilgrim is a re-cut of a Linotype face that Eric Gill originally designed for a book published by the Limited Edition Club of New York. Admired for its tranquil dignity, the Pilgrim type is both firm and elegant. Its general appearance resembles that of Gill’s Joanna font family. The contrast of the font is not very strong. The serifs are bracketed. Eric Gill, who designed the type on which Pilgrim is closely based, observed one sort of model for his lettering - the incised monumental letter of Roman origin. This is clearly seen in his capitals, but is also true of his lowercase letters, which have little of the calligraphic or engraved qualities of most other type designs. Gill’s types are Roman in the classic sense, yet also particular to Gill himself.

During the Covid pandemic, I noticed that a lot of public figures (politicians, actors, influencers and even kings and princesses) had to apologise for not following the social distance rules, the lockdown rules or the 'stay at home' rules. They threw parties, went on holidays abroad and - in general - made a nuisance of themselves. When I finished this font, I decided to call it Public Figure! Public Figure is quite a neat, handmade font. It doesn't stick to the rules (but does like to keep up appearances), likes to party (but manages to stay safe) and brightens up your work (without being too gaudy). Public Figure comes with two alternate sets for the lower case glyphs (that cycle as you type) and a massive amount of diacritics, including Vietnamese.

Botanique is a hand-drawn typeface based on Schmalfette Bernhard Antiqua by Lucien Bernhard. The original face was released in 1912 by Flinsch Type Foundry, which was later acquired by Bauer. Schmalfette means ‘bold condensed’ in German and Botanique adds a charming roughness to these attributes, evoking an organic and somewhat retro mood. Its uppercase glyphs shine with adorned stylistic alternates and cool blooming swash versions for both initial and final forms, all cleverly programmed into OpenType font features. My family and I are stuck in quarantine for a week; my eldest son tested positive for Covid19 (but everyone else tested negative), so we can’t go out. That means that the kids follow classes online. I noticed their notebooks and suddenly realised that a notebook used to be called a ‘cahier’, which is a French word meaning the exact same thing. I guess it sounded sophisticated at the time. Mon Petit Cahier (meaning: My Little Notebook) is a handmade script font. It is not meant to be awe-inspiring, nor do you want to use it for headlines or posters. It is a nice little font that feels at home wherever an unobtrusive script is needed. Comes with all the diacritics you want and a set of cool double letter ligatures.

I'm letting my inner nerd show through on this one: "Chaotic Neutral" is a Dungeons & Dragons thing. But the name applies to this font, too! Chaotic: This font has all sorts of built-in irregularities. Some variation in letter heights and letter widths, and the stroke widths are all over the place. It's all about the hand-written messiness. Neutral: And yet! I've smoothed the strokes a bit, and gone for as few nodes on each letter as I can (while still keeping a bit of roughness), so this font can be used for any kind of purpose -- not just print, but cutting out as well! Yink takes big, bulbous, ball terminals up a notch, by repeating the shapes not only in the black but in the white space too. This interplay between black and white shapes is reminiscent of the yinyang symbol in places, which is where the name Yink originates. It's a shamelessly over-the-top font, and should be set large. Hisham is a modern Arabic headline face, designed by the Lebanese calligrapher, Ahmed Maged, originally for Linotype-Hell Ltd. The Hisham design has a distinctive style with a strong baseline, relieved by strategic cut-away effects, which is counterbalanced by the bold vertical strokes and some strong diagonals. This somewhat compact font adds a new style to the range of Linotype’s Arabic headline fonts. This OpenType font includes Latin glyphs from Optima Extra Black, allowing users to set text in both most Western European and Arabic languages without switching between fonts. Hisham incorporates the Basic Latin character set and the Arabic character set, which supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. The font also includes tabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set of tabular European (Latin) numerals.

Linotype Facsimile is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Designed by J. Luigs and S. Wicker, the forms were constructed for electronic readers, just as the OCR fonts were. The increasing use of computers accompanied the growing number of fonts suitable for electronic reading. The standard has long been set, but designers are always creating new interpretations and new symbols. Typefaces like Facsimile are here to stay and personify the Zeitgeist of the late 20th century.

With its split serifs, Vglee looks like it could be a copy of an “Old West” font but it is not. It was constructed by taking a motif and applying it regardless of consequences. Vglee does not have lower-case letters but it does include a full set of Western and Central European accented characters. Its distinctive, odd appearance can be useful in small doses for decorative purposes. The VgleeStar style contains only the ornament. It is intended to be used in layers with Vglee.

One in the series of fonts called Whiz-Bang Wood Type, intended to be set large and tight. Pilot Point is based on an older font found in Dan X. Solo’s book on Circus Type; the designation fits perfectly. The font gets its name from a small town in Northeast Texas, where several scenes from Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde were filmed. Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Linotype Contacta is part of the Take Type Library, which features winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. Ralf Weissmantel designed this font to display no stroke contrast at all. Instead of using conventional letter forms, Contacta is a more designed-oriented font, with some characters recognizable only in context, not necessarily at first glance. The technical, unconventional forms look almost like a maze, especially when set together. This font is not suitable for text but makes a unique impression in logos and headlines.

SoftMaker’s Chandler Pro is a flamboyant brush script face. Originally designed with a certain far-Eastern touch in mind, it is great for casual typopgraphy. Chandler Pro contains OpenType layout tables for sophisticated typography. It also comes with a huge character set that covers not only Western European languages, but also includes Central European, Baltic, Croatian, Slovene, Romanian, and Turkish characters. Case-sensitive punctuation signs for all-caps titles are included as well as many fractions, and separate sets of tabular and proportional digits.

Cowboy Western is based on an old woodtype font from the late 1800’s Saddle up boys and girls the new Cowboy Western is here, the perfect font for when you need to put a little giddy up in your chickabiddy. This 2013 updated version adds alternate letters, additional language support for eastern, central and western European countries. The glyph set includes Latin extended A, B and Latin extended additional for Vietnamese plus Pinyin support for Chinese transliteration, finally we've finished the set with some discretionary ligatures.

I don’t think I’m a capricious person, but right now, due to the enormous amount of renovation work on our home, I do get bad moods quite often! Capricious is a hand painted all-caps font: I used my favourite Chinese ink, a brush and very rough paper to get the desired ‘eroded’ effect. It is quite a heavy display font, so I wouldn’t really set a text in it, but it works really well for headlines, catching titles and products that need some pepper!
