The powerful Eknaton comes with slanted slabserifs, a new way to add some spring to the old Egyptian slabs. Eknaton echoes the tradition that started with Napoleon's Egyptian campaign 1798, and the simultaneous looting of Egyptian art. The imports led to new ladies fashion in Europe, new architecture and new typefaces like Antique (Figgins, 1815) and Egyptian (Caslon, 1816). The Egyptian faces were also the origin of the famous Clarendon (1845) and Ionic No.5 (1925) as well as the rest of "the legibility types". In the 20th century the slabserifs became popular again with Bauhaus incarnations like Memphis (Wolf, 1929) and Beton (Jost, 1931). The Bauhaus movement, otherwise anti-serif, liked the architectural influence in Egyptian slabserifs. The Bo Berndal design of Eknaton puts some speed into the old Sphinx - the cat is back, in better form than ever! Bo Berndal, born 1924, has been designing typefaces for 56 years, for Monotype, Linotype and other foundries. Devoid is a sans serif typeface with a no frills stripped down design. The design has all the features of the neo grotesk typeface, horizontally cut endings, modern capitals, oval counters, with a bare bones appearance. The typeface comes in three subtle widths, Devoid Slim, which is spaced most narrowly, Devoid and Devoid Set, which have a wider letterspacing. There are regular, medium and bold weights with accompanying italics. The vertical metrics align across weights and widths, this allows for optical size adjustment as well as adjusting for same size text fit. Dutch designer Pier Taylor designed the typeface in 2020 for use in catalogs, lists and registers.

Peter started as a sketch in the static sans-serif tradition of Helvetica®. Then slight references to the calligraphic origin of type were added, giving it a more distinct character. This neo-grotesque sans has rational and clear basic letterforms, while in its details it unfolds attributes of humanist type. As a neo-grotesque sans it claims a very modest design, yet being a bit wider than its relatives and offering the warmth of humanist drafts. The early sketch grew to a type family of 18 fonts and now supports 700+ glyphs with pro opentype features.

Churchward Isabella is a five weight typeface family originally designed during the 1980's by the late type designer Joseph Churchward, from New Zealand. A straightforward, geometric sans serif, it is a no-nonsense, highly legible workhorse design, readable on screen as well as in print, for text, headline and display. The family includes Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Extra Bold.

In the late 60’s, one of the best art publications in the country was Motive magazine, published (amazingly) by the United Methodist Church. Filled to the brim with poetry, essays, line drawing and woodcuts, it also featured some cutting-edge typography. Boxy/Code is based upon my memories of woodcut typography from that great magazine. Since Boxy/Code ’s lowercase consists of the uppercase’s negative spaces, it’s easy to combine the two with Layer Styles in Photoshop in order to achieve the effect I used in one poster above. It also works great if you use a well-known text as a background. This new version is totally redrawn and features all the Latin-accented letters. Uppercase consists of black capitals in boxes; lowercase features the negative spaces of those boxed capitals. Uppercase and lowercase line up exactly for 2-color effects.

»AlphaOne« is my newest addition to the experimental Alpha-font-collection. I just had to do this one! It is based on Paul Renners fonts, but has got nothing to do with them, I just took the widths and some basic forms. No – or hardly no – optical corrections were made to the glyphs. I wanted the pure geometric forms to come to life. This was a lot of fun to design, I especially like the »Q« with the negative tail. I did make four weights, but nothing is normal with this font, so weight doesn’t really mean anything. Have fun!

Continuo is a fascinating, all-uppercase display typeface wherein the contour of each letterform is described with a single, continuous line. The challenges presented by that simple idea are similar to constructing letterforms with neon tubing. For example, when the strokes of a letterform need to be heavier than the width of the neon tube, two tubes are employed to create the outer contours, effectively leaving an unfilled void inside the stroke. Also, since neon tubes cannot be broken apart as they trace the contours, they must follow a path that, for reasons of economy and to avoid optical massing (or bright spots in neon), the tubes are not crossed. So too, the construction of Continuo follows. The newly updated Continuo now has alternate forms of letters A-Z available in the lowercase a-z and by extension those alternates are also present in the lowercase diacritics. The new Latin Plus glyph repertoire of Continuo contains almost 900 glyphs, supporting 224 languages, including Vietnamese and multiple African languages. A handy set of arrows and additional international currency symbols were added as well. The name is derived from the musical term “Basso Continuo” meaning an almost constant bass line, an integral part of most musical melodies. As an in-line display type, Continuo is ideal for headlines and most oversized applications and its unique appearance commands attention from viewers.

A very distinctive style of font, in a kind of art deco style form the '30s. This font is unique in that there are no open, negative spaces in glyphs such as upper and lower case o, or p, or others which would usually have them. Instead the glyphs are solid. The only letters or glyphs which have triangular sides are A and V, X, and Y. This is unusual.

Nature Stencils JNL brings together a number of vintage decorator stencils with bird and flower motifs (along with individualized elements from the original designs). These home decor stencils were manufactured by the Huntington Oil Cured Stencil Company somewhere around the early 1950s. Originally located in Huntington, New York, the company later relocated to the South Florida area, but there is no additional information found about the company's background.

The Times Europa Office family is designed after the model of the original serif family produced by Walter Tracy and the Linotype Design Studio in 1974. A redesign of the classic Times New Roman typeface, Times Europa was created as its replacement for The Times of London newspaper. In contrast to Times New Roman, Times Europa has sturdier characters and more open counter spaces, which help maintain readability in rougher printing conditions. Times Europa drastically improved on the legibility of the bold and italic styles of Times New Roman. Overall, text set in Times Europa is easier to read, and quicker to digest. Akira Kobayashi, Linotype’s Type Director, brought Times Europa up to speed for the new millennium in 2006. Now optimized for office communication instead of newspaper design, Times Europa Office offers a familiar yet refreshingly new appearance for serif text. Because of The Times of London’s specific printing conditions in the early 1970s, Times Europa originally had some intentional errors built into its letterform design. These inconsistencies created an even image in newspaper text in the long run. However, these design elements bear no role on modern office communication and its needs. Kobayashi redrew these problem forms, eliminating them completely. Now Times Europa’s font weights appear clearer and easier to read than ever before.

Lens Grotesk is a Neo-grotesque type family of 16 fonts born as a result of a very conscious research in the field of the neutral Swiss aesthetic. There's a reason for all the prominent examples of this design like Helvetica and Univers to be used on a daily basis for more than 70 years and it's a simple one - they just work. The closed terminals, the low contrast, uniform widths and proportions makes the Neo-grotesques feel just right. Although very often branded as stiff, the neutral Neo grotesques are here to stay and Lens Grotesk is our own reading of the popular style. Lens Grotesk takes the Neo-grotesk model one step further adding a pinch of Geometric sans-serif to the mix thus creating a way more modern and contemporary looking design. Wolverhampton is a new Neo-Victorian face from Greater Albion Typefounders. It's something of an example of starting with a small idea and running with it. This family of three typefaces (Regular, Small Capitals and Capitals) was inspired by a line of lettering seen on a late 19th Century enamel advertisement made by Chromo of Wolverhampton (hence the family name). The family grew, topsy-like, from a recreation of these initial fifteen capital letterforms to the three complete typefaces offered here. The three typefaces are ideal for advertising and poster work with a Victorian, Edwardian, or 'Steam-punk' theme. They would also be eminently suitable for signage inspired by the same eras or (as we've seen a number of our other typeface families prove very popular) for book covers of period related novels and historical works. Finally, these slender elegant display faces are just plain fun!

Heimat Didone is the high contrast serif typeface family within the Heimat Collection, also containing Heimat Display, Heimat Sans, Heimat Mono and Heimat Stencil. Heimat Didone is a neo-classical typeface family designed for contemporary typography, especially for use in headlines and on posters, but also for reading purposes. It combines an idiosyncratic appearance with the feeling of a grid-based letter construction of the late 20s. Since the design might be too extreme for some applications, Heimat Didone’s character set provides two alphabets, the regular one plus an alternate design that comes across as less suspenseful. Balboa is a display design combining elements of early sans serif and grotesque types with contemporary types. It evolved from ATF Headline Gothic, Banner (a headline typeface I drew for the San Francisco Chronicle), and Newsweek No.9, a Stephenson Blake-like grotesque I designed for Roger Black's 1980 redesign of Newsweek Magazine. There are nine styles, including the three new styles that have been added in 2014: Medium, Light and Ultra Light.

No mystery here: this monocase neon face is based on the old logotype lettering for The Electric Company TV show. This version adds a little jolt with happy outlet characters in the dagger and double dagger positions, a plug at the section mark, and a rather novel treatment of the mu character. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.
