  10. Advertisers Gothic by HiH, $12.00
Advertisers Gothic is bold and brash, like the city it comes from, Chicago. It was designed by the accomplished German-American matrix engraver, Robert Wiebking, for the Western Type Foundry in 1917. As its name suggests, it was designed for commercial headliner work, much as Publicity Gothic by Sidney Gaunt for BB&S the year before. See our Publicity Headline. Alternate letters ‘A’ & ‘S’ are provided. The most popular ad words “Free!”, “New!” and “Sale” (with both esses) are provided at an angle for dramatic tension. Advertisers Gothic became quite popular because it was effective. It can work equally well for a flyer advertising a non-profit event as for a magazine product ad. This font refuses to be a wimp. Use it boldly. Advertisers Gothic ML represents a major extension of the original release, with the following changes: 1. A total of 335 glyphs (compare) with added glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. 2. Added OpenType GSUB layout features: pnum, ornm, liga, hist & salt ˜ with total 13 lookups. 3. Added 209 kerning pairs. 4. Revised vertical metrics for improved cross-platform line spacing. 5. ITC Stylus is the work of American designer Dennis Pasternak, who based its forms on those of freehand architectural lettering from historical and contemporary sources. Pasternak points out that while the typeface emulates hand lettering, no pencil drawings or scanned art were used in its creation. The letters bounce slightly across the baseline, giving the typeface the look of true handwriting. ITC Stylus emanates warmth when used for extended text and a fresh quality in display sizes.

Sarabande is a painstaking reproduction of Jean Jannon's famous "Garamond" of 1621 -- also known as "Caracteres de l'universite." 20. Tightwad JNL by Jeff Levine, $29.00
“I Don't like No Cheap Man” is a piece of early 1900s sheet music featuring its title hand lettered in a condensed slab serif design. The influences of the Art Nouveau era are clearly found in the many eccentric character shapes within the various letters of the original artwork. Recreated in digital type, Tightwad JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions – and its font name is a variant of the “Cheap Man” portion of the song’s title.
  21. Schnitz by Linotype, $29.99
Linotype Schnitz is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by the Finnish artist Osmo Niemi, the characters seem to contain no round forms at all. Linotype Schnitz looks as though it were chiseled and has an angular, almost brittle feel. 23. Juggling Squad by Bogstav, $19.00
The name of the font is from the hilarious movie "21 Jump Street" - and that is where the similarity ends. While the movie is quite funny, it is also super goofy! I can't say the same about the font, because terms like organic and organic comes to my mind. Strange, yes! And I have really no good reason for this naming, other that its an odd way to tribute this one of my all time favourite comic movies! :)
  24. Calaveras by Design is Culture, $29.00
In August of 2009, I was commissioned by Zoo York, a New York City based skateboard company, to visit Buenos Aires to study and document street typography. As soon as my taxi driver took the bustling street Entre Ríos, it was clear that the city and I were going to be good friends. Many of the independently owned businesses on Entre Ríos are adorned with handmade signage. These signs are painted in a style called Fileteado which is a century-old Argentinian type of lettering and floral ornamentation. Nowadays, Fileteado is still a prominent part of the city’s landscape, coloring the façades of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Calaveras and Diablitos are two new typefaces that were inspired by Fileteado. Stylistically, the fonts are a return to a rhythmic and playful sensibility reminiscent of Vitrina and Cuba, two fonts that I designed in 1996. Along with dynamism and dance, these new fonts incorporate a rigor and functionality essential to labelling any font a ‘workhorse.’ The names Calaveras and Diablitos, came from the name of a song by the infamous Buenos Aires rock band, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. —Pablo A. Medina
