Recently I have been watching some re-runs of Dexter. In season 1, Debra has a rough morning and complains she cannot make it through the day without eating a breakfast burrito. Stadia is designed around a series of modular units: quartercircles, teardrop shapes, squares, circles and variations thereon. The versatility of these basic shapes is such that a teardrop, for example, can represent a looped bowl, as in the lower part of the a, while also representing a curved arc at the top of the same character. The strict grid is broken for the T and the Y, and the placement of accents. The alternative – basing a T, for example, across three units – though rational, is far less aesthetically pleasing. As always with type design, one has to know when the internal structural rules should be bent for a more beautiful result. The horizontal lines appear to travel through the letters, bursting into stars in the counters of lower-case characters such as the o and p. The outline version is weighted to the same width as the gaps between the units.

Joy Redick designed Blackoak, a big and heavy Egyptienne-sytle titling slab serif face, in 1990. The extremely robust style of the characters in this typeface was consciously distorted; creating letterforms that appear flattened and stretched, like a rubber band. Blackoak is drawn in the style of old wood tpes, just like those that one envisions when one thinks of the large, decorative posters that once filled Wild West America. The wood type collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC acted as a primary source of inspiration for this design. True to its rooks, Blackoak is meant for use exclusively in headlines in very large point sizes, or for logos and other corporate advertising purposes.

Prior to 500 AD the 24-rune Elder Futhark was used in Sweden. From 500 AD until 800 AD there were many Futharks which were transitions from the 24-rune Futhark to one of the 16-rune Futharks. By the end of this period the 24-rune Futhark was completely out of use , and only 16-runes Futharks were in use. By 900 AD two different types of Shorttwigs-Futharks had been born. One was popularized in Norway and the other was used in the west (the British islands). By 1000 AD the adjustment of the runes to the Latin alphabet had begun, and several versions are found up until the Dalrunes, about 1700-1800 AD.

As if gliding in on the tide, ITC Kahana floats across the page with the pulse and sway of the sacred Hawaiian hula dance. The original drawings for this display typeface were created while designer Teri Kahan lived in the Aloha State, and its bold verticals symbolically convey the power and strength of the Polynesian people. Kahan has spent most of her life working with letters. She discovered Speedball lettering pens in her teens, opened a design studio that specialized in the lettering and calligraphic arts while in her early twenties, and grew her business in California and Hawaii. Today, she embraces new design challenges and digital technology, but letters are still at the core of her work. In ITC Kahana, Kahan created a design that is both distinctive and versatile. Menus, posters, display headlines, packaging and brochures fall easily within this typeface's range. And the word “kahana” is more than just a namesake: in Hawaiian, “kaha” means “to mark, draw, place, turn or surf,” and “na” means “belonging to.” ITC Kahana also includes an enchanting decorated alphabet in the lowercase position that expands this typeface's usefulness to the designer.

The resulting letters and the act of cutting them from paper inform the type design process, resulting in strong, simple shapes and open, inviting textures. The tone is crisp and straightforward. Dolce is the next step in Elena Albertoni’s ongoing exploration of handwritten letterforms that started with her typefaces Dyna and Scritta. It is an attempt to arrive at a more naturally flowing type of handwriting, striking a balance between the orderly and the informal, while taking a critical look at the possibilities and limits of OpenType. Dolce uses OpenType functionality to achieve a strong sense of spontaneity. . Because the uppercase letters of Dolce are lively calligraphic initials, they should be used only in combination with lowercase, and not in all-caps setting; to make it easier for the user, Dolce includes a special OpenType feature that automatically substitutes initials with small caps when words are completely set in capitals. The small caps set is calmer, fitting nicely with the rest of the typeface. Dolce offers full support for Central European languages. In 2005 Dolce received the “Certificate of Excellence in Type Design” award from the Type Directors Club (TDC) of New York.

Jesus Saves is a font based on the familiar old logo that has “JESUS” hidden within a maze-like set of multi-branched vertical bars. The characters appear to be an alien, cryptic language at first sight, perhaps even a Japanese, Chinese, or Korean language, thanks to the unusual figures created by the combinations of various letters. It is a teaser for the eyes, as well as a visual feast of De Stijl-type art. It is an attention-getting font that is cool to look at, an eye puzzle that is enticing to decipher. It’s a great font to use for striking logos (see Gallery Images) by the judicious use of ligatures, where in word settings ligatures may be used at the beginnings of words, the middle or the endings of words. Jesus Heals is the missing spaces from the Jesus Saves font, sort of like a doughnut hole font! If you use this font to fill in the spaces in the Jesus Saves font, it becomes whole, or healed, thus the name. Jesus Lives is a raised block/3D or three dimensional version of Jesus Heals. For color combinations in apps that support layering, Jesus Lives synchs and has perfect kerning register with Jesus Heals, as Jesus Heals has with Jesus Saves. The digitization was done by fontmeister John Bomparte.

Patzcuaro is a summer resort by a lake of the same name. It is situated 370 km west of Ciudad de Mexico and a visitor from Europe, on seeing it, will be reminded of the Austrian Rust or the South Bohemian Trebon. The town's colonial architecture is protected as a historical monument, the reddish-brown tint of the footings of the buildings, their white facades and even the type of lettering with red initials is prescribed - and these regulations are also complied with as far as cars are concerned. This colour scheme is splendid in combination with the rich gamut of greys of the stone window jambs, vaults, lintels and pillars. Joking apart, even the local petrol station is 16th-century in appearance. Patzcuaro Regular is a cosy, welcoming type face which is good for use on labels.

I used to be a frequent flyer; as a tour guide I often had 6 to 10 international flights per year. At the time I didn’t even think about the consequences of flying, as I loved my job and the job was all about travel. Now, with the planet in deplorable state, I try to keep flying to an utter minimum. I guess you call it ’shame of flying’… Frequent Flyer font is a nice, eroded, all caps font. It comes with multilingual support, so you may come across it during your travels.

Sleepy time… Ah, if only your kids would go to bed, close their eyes and drift off to sleep. This font was created when my son had some problems falling asleep: he'd cry, he wanted to sleep in a different bed, he wanted a different animal friend (he has Tij - a tiger, Meh - a sheep, Rafi - a giraffe, Moo - a cow, Woofy - a dog, Kikker - a frog). Sleepy Time font is an all caps typeface with uneven letters and a very different upper and lower case. It comes with all languages, including Cyrillic!

Back in 2011, Gelato Script was the best-selling brush script font on MyFonts, and has remained popular, appearing on everything from designer handbags to primetime TV shows; from food blogs to wedding invitations; from glossy magazines to (not so imaginatively!) ice cream shops. All these years on, and it struck me that there is much that could be improved on; there are certain glyphs that never quite felt right. So I decided to update Gelato Script, and this is the result, Gelato Luxe. What started as a simple update quickly spiralled into a total overhaul. There is not a single glyph in the new version that’s the same. The entire font has been tweaked and tinkered with and redrawn and respaced and rekerned to get it to this point. While I wanted to maintain the feel of Gelato Script, Gelato Luxe represents a massive leap in sophistication, with new alternates for smoother connections, and a totally new OpenType engine, with no fewer than seventeen stylistic sets. Eponymous is an Egyptian-style typeface with chunky, scalloped serifs. It is available in five weights in both roman and italic. I have always loved slab serif type and have created Eponymous to fulfil a yearning for a versatile, stylish and contemporary slab face. A key design characteristic is the implementation of scalloped serifs which, to me, imbues the typeface with a distinctive personality. Make use of the Open Type features that are part of Eponymous. For a start, you can implement some stylistic alternates, so, if the main characters don’t quite suit your concept, try activating Stylistic Set 1. There’s also a full set of small caps included. You can mix and match these characters with regular lowercase to create some interesting unicase typography. Of course, all characters have complementing diacritics, enabling multi-language support. Rameau for classic elegance The type family Rameau™ was designed by Sarah Lazarevic She started with the italics; these she derived from the manuscript of the opera Les fêtes de l´hymen et de l´amour", the music for which was composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1747. In the 18th century, musical compositions were published in the form of impressions from copper plates that had been hand-engraved in contrast with books and other texts, which were printed from moveable lead type. The italic letters of Rameau include many ligatures and are thus typical of the engraving style of the period. Rameau exhibits much of the harmonious rhythm associated with genuine manuscript. The marked Antiqua contrasts make the pages on which the font is used quite literally sparkle. This effect is enhanced by the excessively sharp terminals and the prominent serifs of the upper case letters. This highly legible and stylish type family can be used for printing high quality books, invitations, menus and all kinds of texts - anywhere the grace and elegance of France in the 18th century is to be invoked."

Boring Sans, designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, is a typeface family designed along two variable axis: weight and weirdness. These two parameters allow designers to explore a full range of variations on sans serif design, starting from a neutral set of proportions and evolving to a strongly contrasted and dynamic treatment, ready to raise eyebrows on social media. The basic "A" subfamily, developed in in five weights plus italics, behaves like a traditional, solid workhorse sans serif, with finely tuned proportions for optimal readability and minimal emotional impact. The "B" subfamily, developed in the same ten weights, shows a more contemporary "brutal" approach, with slanted lines, deep inktraps and stronger contrast. All these features are brought to the extreme in the ten weights of the "C" subfamily, with each letter a bombastic show of exhuberant weirdness. Each of the style variant is developed in five weight with matching italics, with a glyph set covering extended latin languages and including many alternate forms and stylistc sets. This is what you get when you mix monoline rounded letters with some bracketed serifs and finish it off with a sprinkle of ornamental appendages. The result is very readable, rather original and quite charming. I have fixed some inconsistencies in serif designs across the weights, cleaned up the serif connections - and added a fourth weight. But I have kept all the wonky curves and slightly differing stroke thicknesses, as they are so integral to the charm. Kevin King says: "I guess all type designers at some point think 'Well, I'll just have a go at a standard text face...' There is a long story here somewhere, suffice it to say that I started with the thinnest version - typical. I wanted to make a standard serif text face - until I saw it in print and thought "Yuk! it looks like everything else!" - still does really but with twiddles and pooneys..." If you find the "twiddles & pooneys" too much you can tone them down with the OpenType Stylistic Alternate feature (which will make sure they don't appear on three consecutive letters) or remove them completely with the OpenType Swash feature. JY Décennie Express was developed as a sans serif workhorse complement to JY Décennie. The basic roman design shares characteristics, and in some cases, characters (e, o, and others) with the serif version, making JY Décennie Express work particularly well with its progenitor. The design is friendly and approachable, as opposed to stark (the effect one usually has with Helvetica and other over-used typefaces). On closer inspection, straight lines blend into curves on the outlines: the characters are in fact complex but appear simple.

Encorpada Essential is part of Encorpada Project. It started in 2011 with Encorpada Black. Encorparda Pro was released in 2012 with 14 weight - being seven uprights and seven italics. The Pro version brought a lot of opentype features and a extended character set. The Encorpada Essential has the basic character set with 455 glyphs, that supports more than 50 languages and opentype’s basic features such as: allcaps, standard and discretionary ligatures, numerator, denominator, superior, inferior and fractions. It starts with the idea that different things can be mixed infinitely. Robolt comprises four designs with multiple options to add variety and playfulness. Battery and Machine have a retro touch which reminds one of toy labels from the '80s, while Vintage is rendered a Didot style with different textures to choose. Streamlined Handdrawn style is nicely put in contrast with the solid types. Elements are also available to complement the letters. Generisch Mono is a monospaced version of Generisch Sans. Generisch - a german equivalent of generic - sans serif typeface has gain its own place among designers and earn such popularity due to its "simple" design. Generisch is influenced by early grotesk typefaces from early 1900's when sans was starting to get popular and used as a body type. Some old ligatures such as ch ck and ng are present in generisch (not the ct and st tho), old style numeral for better typesetting experience and more.

Busted is the very strange and out-of-character outburst of Bill Troop, a guy who was classically trained in everything, from classical piano and literature to classical photography and type design. As far as we could tell, Bill Troop is the kind of guy whose appearance and voice instantly trigger thoughts of black and white photos, fedoras, and pre-industrial age Europe. A few years ago, he even moved from the United States to England, where it took him less than a week to feel at home and start sounding like a Norwich native. Then something happened and the poor dude just snapped. Busted is the controversial result of the blood rushing to his head. If you know what exactly happened to him, please let us know. Concern, consideration and human interest story aside, Busted is a fascinating thing. It is a set of four interchangeable thick outline fonts where the same letter forms turn from wild to wilder to broken to somewhat clean. Mix them up in a setting and you have words that snarl with a sneer. Life's too short. Take it all with a grain of salt. Scream whenever you feel like it. Busted Pro is a single font combining all four character sets, and rigged with an OpenType pseudo-randomizer in the contextual alternates feature, which you can disable or enable anywhere in your setting for maximum visual shock just the way you like it. Boardwalk Avenue Rough is a textured version of Boardwalk Avenue. It’s a robust type collection of three styles and two weights of each. It’s divided into Boardwalk Pen, Boardwalk Antiqua and Boardwalk Serif.
