Athelas Arabic, created by talented Iranian designer Sahar Afshar, is an elegant typeface for fine digital and printed books — perfect for Arabic literature’s captivating forms. This is Alter Littera’s second original design. It started as an attempt at translating into roman forms the lowercase metrics of classic blackletters, in particular those of The Oldtype “Alter Gotisch” Font. In designing a font that had a Mayan or Aztec quality to it without the usual "Mariachi" look, I decided to make it single weight with some open ends and offbeat rounded serifs to give it a more serious feel which will lend itself to other non ethnic uses. When I am working on a new font, I usually play some music, or have a song in my head. When I was working on this font, an Audioslave song called Getaway Car was playing in my head. Again: naming a font is not that difficult! Getaway Car was made with a cheap brush and expensive Chinese ink. No, no fantastic story about how I came up with the name for this font. It was a Sunday when I thought up Sunday Thinker. It seemed like the right name and it wasn’t taken yet, so there you have it!
