I've been working on a usable sans serif for body copy since the mid-1990s (though I certainly did not know it at the time). This one works well. It started life back in the mists of time as a scan of an old German font by Carl Fahrenwaldt. It was developed fully as a synergized serif with strong traditional roots and released as Bergsland Pro. Now it finally makes it to where I was headed all along as a sans text font. The font is based on an alphabet from a mid1920s art deco book. The original seemed to have tapering strokes but it was too small to be sure; I made all strokes parallel & orthogonal and slightly modified the original in a number of other ways to bring it into the 21st Century. The designers of the original were Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring. Nocturne has all the elegance of the Deco fonts of the 1930s. It recalls the romantic, sophisticated Zeitgeist of the early 20th century, that nostalgic time "between the wars". The design of VLNL Mais started out as a thought experiment – "How would it look if you dressed up FuturaBlack in LatinWide serifs?” DBXL drew up the first sketches on graph paper in 2014. Although the concept looked promising enough, it ended up dormant in a desktop folder. To be resurfaced recently when covid-19 started spreading and we were asked to all stay home. The final design ended up with a distinct latino flavour due to the long spikey serifs. They look like tortilla chips. And as maize is the main ingredient in many South-American and specifically Mexican dishes – tortillas, burritos, nachos, tamales, tacos – a name was quickly found. VLNL Mais was designed by DBXL, and can be used for logos, headlines, flyers or posters (and not just for Mexican restaurants). It can be found in the VetteLetters vegetable section.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth studio album (released in 1973) by the English progressive rock group King Crimson. I have always liked this name, as it reminded me of old stories in which witches threw all kinds of weird ingredients (larks’ tongues, bat wings and petrified dragon dung) into a big cauldron. When I created this font, it looked like the writing in an old book of spells, so I just had to call it Larks’ Tongues. Larks’ Tongues is a very lively headline font which would look good on (children’s) book covers, posters and product packaging. So, if you are about to write a book about witches, want to throw a halloween party or want to market your Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, then by all means, use this font! Francker is a sans-serif typeface family based on clean and simple principles of design. The letterforms' curves are inspired by the "super ellipse," a mathematical shape that is about halfway between an ellipse and a rectangle. Francker's lowercase letters appear somewhat reduced, as the a, b, n and u have no spurs. The family is available in nine weights, from Extra Light to Extra Black. Excellent areas of use for Francker signage, posters, magazines, advertisements, or logos; wherever a timeless, modern look is needed. Designed in 1928 by Alessandro Butti under the direction of Raffaello Bertieri for the Nebiolo foundry, Paganini defies standard categorization. While it definitely is a classic foundry text face with obvious roots in the "oldstyle" of the Italian renaissance, its contrast reveals a clear underlying modern influence. In a typical Italian artistic fashion, Paganini manages to be a superb text face while having enough priceless ornamental moments to make it great in display uses as well: Check out the splayed M, the wide-tailed g, the flowing tail on the y, the high-armed k, etcetera. While the original metal version was limited to five basic fonts, this digital expansion includes small caps in the three main upright weights, plenty of alternate forms in all fonts, a super-seductive Open font, and an expanded language support covering the majority of Latin-based languages.

Architype Crouwel is a collection of typefaces created in collaboration with Wim Crouwel, following his agreement with The Foundry, to recreate his experimental alphabets as digital fonts. Crouwel's most recognized work was for the Van Abbe and Stedelijk museums (1954 –72) where he established his reputation for radical, grid-based design. Stedelijk first appeared in the seminal Vormgevers poster, commissioned by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1968. Crouwel created a rigid grid system across the poster of 57 vertical by 41 horizontal lines, also forming the basis for the construction of the letterforms. Although all hand drawn, the resulting typeface had a machine-made appearance. This striking black and white poster with its visible grid became one of Crouwel's most iconic designs. Architype Stedelijk now re-creates these letterforms as a single alphabet typeface in a digital font.

BLOCK CAPITALS is a square, geometric, small caps display face that avoids fashionable foibles and exudes the neutral, unpretentious functionality of time-honoured block lettering. The family has three widths (Narrow, Normal and Wide), and the Bold weights are loosely based on well-used squared nets – 3x5, 4x5 and 5x5. However, the typeface escapes its grid origins whenever necessary with slightly modulated stroke weights, sensitive spacing and careful kerning. The aim is to retain the strength and simplicity of strictly geometric characters while introducing barely perceptible refinements that add elegance and usability. That said, letters and numbers line up horizontally without overlapping the capline or baseline, even the tail of the Q does not descend below the Baseline. Diacritics are modesty proportioned, accented characters extending no farther than necessary, allowing the leading on multiple lines of text to be kept to a minimum.

Zest is an informal brush script drawn with quick, thick brush strokes. While it is based on everyday handwriting, the expansive and easy flow of the script hides the care that has been given to the crafting of each character. In style it harks back to the hey-day of American lettering and calligraphy, yet it has a looseness that is thoroughly modern. Zest comes in three styles: -- Zest-Medium, which is medium-weighted and appropriate to a wide range of applications; -- Zest-Drama, in which the contrast between the the thicker and thinner parts of a brushstroke has been dramatically enhanced; and -- Zest Bezel, in which the brush strokes have been given a contemporary, square-cut appearance. Police JNL was modeled from one of the many fonts created by the late Alf Becker exclusively for Signs of the Times magazine during the 1930s through the 1950s. This was a bit of a difficult design to translate into a digital font file, because the individual characters did not follow a formal structure as to the width and length of the cast shadows or the letter shapes—such is the way of the hand-lettered alphabet. I set out to design a contemporary font that is condensed with thick and thin strokes. The highly structured forms of this condensed font was made more interesting and softer by giving it a slightly calligraphic tone and by adding round corners. Atto's express purpose is to be both utilitarian, compact and technical but with a friendly face. The name "atto" was adopted since it refers to the measurement of "smallness" or detail. You will no doubt discover all the many pleasant nuances within Atto. Adopted in 1964, "atto" comes from the Danish "atten", meaning eighteen. Atto - (symbol a) a SI prefix to an unit and means that it is 10 to the power- 18 times this unit. Examples are one attosecond or one attometer/attometre. Atto is available in for Mac and Windows in Postscript, Truetype and Opentype.

Alfina Notte is a chancery typeface that shows a modern temperament, but is inspired by the eponymous town of Torre Alfina, one of the most beautiful medieval villages of Italy, situated on the edge of the plateau Alfina, a few miles from of Orvieto. The place where is the castle is steeped in history. Its roots date back to the Lombard kingdom (seventh century); later it was under the rule of Monaldeschi (1200-1700) and more recently (1880) the property of the rich French banker Count Edoardo Cahen of Antwerp, who was responsible for the present aspect of the Castle. Alfina Notte is the bold version of Alfina, a type with soft lines, very slender upper cases and thin overlapping strokes; The stylistic alternates are particularly important, and the type is enriched by many, different OpenType features.

Dimitrina was created with a simple premise: Can there exist a typeface which features a minimum of sharp angles? And a readable typeface, as well? With these strict rules in mind, the development started. At first the typeface looked more like a script, and some characters ( M G or R, to name a few) still hold traces of a handwritten style which spices the overall taste of Dimitrina. Since the first draft every character was redrawn, and edited several times, for the purpose of making the typeface readable, and distinct at the same time. At first glance, the lettering style of Technopen JNL seems to emulate the computer-age fonts of the 1980s. In actuality, this font is derived from an alphabet sample found in an instructional booklet for the Esterbrook Drawlet Pens. The Drawlet line was Esterbrook's answer to the iconic Speedball pen points sold through their chief competitor, the Hunt Pen Manufacturing Company. So, what seems to be late 20th Century typography is actually from vintage source material. In fact, the entire contents of the instructional booklet were copyright 1929! A few minor changes were made to the original A-Z alphabet and additional characters were added. The name Technopen is a shortening of the term 'technical pen', which is both a nod to the techno age of the 80s and the technical instruments of the past utilized for drawing and lettering.
