Display Board JNL is based on Futura Display, which was designed in 1932 by Paul Renner as an extension of his original (1927) Futura family of typefaces. According to Wikipedia, the font was developed as a typeface by the Bauer Type Foundry, in competition with Ludwig & Mayer's seminal Erbar typeface of 1926 Display Board JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

One in the series of fonts celebrating the Halcyon Days of Handlettering. Magic Lantern is a caps and small caps font based on an untitled design by Samuel Welo, whose Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers appeared in six editions between 1927 and 1960. The Classic Charles Rennie Mackintosh Font has been a massive seller over the years. Very unusual for the horror genre, this slightly tweaked version of the classic original mirrors how the show's producers have used it.

Wyoming Pastad is the simplest of the Wyoming series. The round letter shapes of Wyoming Spaghetti have moved toward squareness. The overall effect is that Wyoming Pastad no longer looks much like an “Old West” face. There are two shadowed versions of WyomingPastad. Using the ShadowedInside style in layers with the shadowed styles is an easy way to get two-colored letters.

No secret here: this typeface was inspired by the opening credits for the television series "Justified." Alternate upper and lowercase letter to achieve the effect, or—in OpenType-savvy programs—activate the Contextual Alternates (calt) feature. Thin numbers can be found in these positions: ~^{}[]|\<>. The first in a series of typefaces based on the work of legendary lettering artist Alf Becker, whose works appeared in Signs of the Times magazine for almost thirty years. Originally titled "Extreme Thin Gothic", this was Becker’s 185th design for the magazine. Eckhardt Showcard JNL and Eckhardt Showcard Two JNL are drawn from more lettering found in an old sign painting book. Jeff Levine has continued naming a series of fonts for the late Albert Eckhardt, Jr. (1929-2005) who had owned Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing. Al was a talented lettering artist and a good friend to Jeff.

Churchward Maori is the second of a series of eight Maori style typefaces designed by New Zealand type designer Joseph Churchward, and released by BluHead Studio, LLC. Churchward Maori infuses standard Latin glyph forms with traditional Maori decorative elements to create a wildly organic design. BluHead Studio expanded the character set to support standard Latin character sets. BluHead previously released Churchward Ta Tiki.

It began as a series of photographs of the rusty metal brand names on old tractors in a museum. When I scanned the photos and began to trace the letters, I found the rust and deterioration created a level of detail which gave my letters a psychotic anger which, as an art director in an advertising agency, I closely identified with.

Wyoming Macroni is the split-serif (or Tuscan) version of the Wyoming series. The Pegged version adds a horizontal spike through the middle of the stems, which has been a popular variation of this style. Included in the family are two shadowed versions. The ShadowedInside styles can be used in layers with the Shadowed styles to easily create two-colored letters.

Inspired by Edward M. Catich’s seminal thesis on the origins of the Roman inscriptional style, such as that found on Trajan’s column, Richard Lipton’s Canto traces the path from an expressive, preparatory Brush (with Brush Open to preserve gestural details at smaller sizes), through informal Pen, to the formal Roman. Classical capitals are accompanied by Lipton’s own calligraphic lowercase, small caps, and swashes.

Relato Sans is the other face of Relato Serif (a typeface with much idiosyncrasy) nevertheless, the sans version of this typeface is more austere and aseptic. The Republic Gothic series was among the last original wood type designs manufactured by Hamilton Manufacturing Co. It was first shown in Hamilton's New Gothic Faces in Wood Type (c. 1920). The design features a sans-serif style reminiscent of brush-formed letters popular with sign painters of the era. Originally issued in 6 different widths and in both outline and solid versions, this digital release features the "Extended" width known as Hamilton Republic Gothic series 775 & 776. The pair of outline and solid is designed as 'chromatics' that can be printed one over the other to achieve multiple color effects or individually as stylistic alternatives. This release features the first ever digitization of Republic Gothic. The two fonts are carefully aligned and kerned to allow for multicolor overlayment in any digital design program. It features a full Western and Central European Character set.

I am a HUGE fan of Bernard Cornwell’s ‘The Saxon Stories’. Ever since a television series has been made, the series of books is also know as ‘The Last Kingdom’. I have read them all, at break-neck speed and I can’t wait for the next book!! Wintanceastre (Winchester) is based on a 10th century Latin manuscript. I have tried to stay close to the original letters, but since Latin does not have all modern glyphs, I found myself designing the missing ones. So, before you scold me for having made a font that is historically inaccurate: it was never meant to be an exact replica, nor would anyone want an exact replica, as it would be useless for modern texts and designs. Wintanceastre comes with a whole bunch of ligatures and alternate glyphs. Use it for any design that needs a little ‘Dark Ages’ look!

Nearly a hundred human heads, in three dingbat files. The whole series comes from the sketchbook: the original ink drawings were then digitized and refined to create vector outlines. Rather than perfectly smooth, geometrical shapes, the Entestats, like their close relatives in the Capsbats series, the Entestats retain a handmade look and feel. The Entestats are ready-made illustrations, though of course they will appreciate being enriched with colours, textures, an imaginative layout... and use them for a variety of projects. Use them small, as spot illustrations or as big as a whole page or page spread. The Entestats and their kin, the Capsbats, are a terrific resource for presentations, packaging, logos, brochures and advertisements, to name a few applications. Weekend Tabloid JNL is a classic sans serif wood type design that found its way into the setting of newspaper headlines during the pre-electronic age of publishing.

ITC Werkstatt is a result of the combined talents of Alphabet Soup's Paul Crome and Satwinder Sehmi, along with Ilene Strizver and Colin Brignall. It is inspired by the work of Rudolph Koch, the renowned German calligrapher, punchcutter, and type designer of the first third of this century, without being based directly on any of Koch's typefaces. Werkstatt has obvious affinities with the heavy, woodcut look of Koch's popular Neuland, but also with display faces like Wallau and even the light, delicate Koch Antiqua. Brignall began by drawing formal letters with a 55mm cap height, which Sehmi reinterpreted using a pen with a broad-edge nib. “Not an easy process,” says Brignall, “since one of the features of Koch's style is that while it was calligraphic in spirit, most of the time his counter shapes did not bear any resemblance to the external shapes, as they would in normal calligraphy. This meant that Sehmi could not complete a whole character in one go, but had to create the outside and inside shapes separately and then ink in the center of the letters.” The process was repeated, only without entirely filling in the outlines, for the Engraved version. Crome handled the scanning and digitization, maintaining the hand-made feel while creating usable digital outlines. “The collaboration of artisans with particular skills,” says Brignall, “in a modern-day, computer-aided studio environment, seems very much in step with the 'workshop' ethos that Rudolph Koch encouraged and promoted so much.”
