A period piece is something of or pertaining to a specific era or time. Anything evoking a knowledge or feeling of an era can be labeled as such. The aptly named type font Period Piece JNL reflects the hand lettering found on the cover of early 20th century vintage sheet music entitled "My Baby's Arms" (from the stage production of "Ziegfeld Follies of 1919"). Although strongly akin to the coming Art Deco movement in its lettering style, Period Piece JNL still contains a strong influence of the Art Nouveau era of the 1900s through the 1920s.

British type designers Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir created this display FontFont in 2012. The family has 52 weights, ranging from 018 Thin to 144 Black and is ideally suited for logo, branding and creative industries, music and nightlife as well as poster and billboards. A 1964 piece of sheet music entitled “Old Soldiers Never Die (They Just Fade Away)” was based on the farewell speech General Douglas MacArthur gave to Congress on April 19, 1951. This particular edition of the song sheet had part of his speech (as well as its title) hand lettered in a free-form sans serif reminiscent of the lettering done by such noted lettering artists as Paul Coker and Saul Bass. The casual and playful style of this type design became the inspiration for Swing Vote JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettered title found on the cover of the 1932 sheet music for “Dancing Marathon” inspired the digital revival of this unusual lettering as well as the font’s name. This eccentric Art Deco design (with a slight bit of Art Nouveau mixed in) is a thin, monoline typeface. Dancing Marathon JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. Dance marathons got their start during the Great Depression as people desperate to earn a few dollars would enter into contests that went on for hours until the last couple remained standing on the dance floor.

Bannock Brae Gothic is a sans serif typeface. It is an original creation of Steve Jackaman (ITF) and was created for the Red Rooster Collection in 1999. The typeface was loosely inspired by a typeface from an old obscure wood type specimen book from the turn of the 20th century. Due to its turn-of-the-century roots, Bannock Brae Gothic has an informal 1920’s art deco look. It finds an ideal home in lighthearted projects concerning crafts, food, festivals, and music, but its alternates still give it the flexibility to showcase a classic and timeless feel in any project.

The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast is a 70's concept album/rock opera by Deep Purple's Roger Glover. The music video to Love Is All, featuring a lute playing frog in a cape, must be one of the best videos ever made. At least, I believe so. When working on this font, the song popped up in my head (it is still there), so I decided to name this cute, cartoonish font after the album. Butterfly Ball is a fun and happy typeface with rounded glyphs and an uneven baseline. Of course it comes with a hallucinatory range of diacritics.

Ritz Slab Serif JNL is a bold display face which shares a lot of similar design traits to Stymie and other similar metal type of the 1930s and 1940s, but in actuality was modeled from only four letters. On the sheet music for the 1937 song "Sweet Varsity Sue" [from the 20th Century Fox Film "Life Begins in College"], there is a picture of the Ritz Brothers - a popular comedy team from 1925 through the late 1960s. The hand lettered name "Ritz" became the basis for Ritz Slab Serif JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

ITC Grimshaw Hand is based on the handwriting of its British designer, Phill Grimshaw. Warm and lively, this typeface has the look of spontaneous handwriting with a little extra panache. On occasion, one type design's influence can result in a completely different end result. Take the hand lettering found on a 1920s piece of sheet music for the song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart". Sheet music for the tune "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey" (from the 1937 film "Coney Island" starring Betty Grable, George Montgomery and Cesar Romero) has the song title hand lettered in a condensed Art Deco sans serif design. The idea that mathematical precision and the supposed "purity" of geometric forms are part of the discourse of us graphic designers is not new. Studying typography for some time now and learning about all the small alterations and adjustments that this geometry undergoes to better adapt to the imperfect human eye, I found myself with a new way of seeing things. Compasso is, in a way, a result of my growth as a designer. Established and recognized fonts like Futura, Avenir, and their predecessors (including Tempo - published by the Ludlow foundry in the early 20th century) informed the result of Compasso at some level. Others opened my mind to possibilities. Mallory, Azo Sans, the font designed for Audi by Bold Monday, and many other contemporary sans-serif fonts that left me speechless are also responsible for details present in this font. From the first sketch, the family grew on both sides, gaining condensed and extended counterparts. From there - and from a brilliant insight from designer Nicole Rauen - I learned that Compasso was not about geometry. Compasso is about rhythm. It's about the rhythmic movement that provides a foundation, supports, and also makes you dance and swing. My musical taste is too eclectic, I can go from classical to funk in less than two songs on Spotify. Compasso is also eclectic. VLNL Beatbox is a solid tech heavy straight stencil-face with a lot of character. It was originally designed as a logo for dj Markus Schultz back in 2004, who rejected it. His management couldn't read it, or thought people wouldn’t be able to read it. But Chef Donald DBXL found the concept interesting enough to finish it and has used it in many projects since. It was the identity font for the Battle of Amsterdam, a talent showcase in beat boxing and other skills. Beatboxing is a style of hiphop music (beats) made with the mouth and a microphone. A box is a handy container to store stuff. Like food, or fonts. We use a lot of boxes at the VetteLetters office. VLNL Beatbox is best deployed big, like in logos or headlines. Or flyers, album covers, posters and signage. As a display and headline typeface it’s got a lot of character. We could definitely see it painted on the side of a tank, or an airplane. Quintet is a narrow, stylized sans serif font made up of thin, looping lines. This font tries to walk the line between retro and modern and to incorporate some hand drawn imperfections without being too obvious about it. I kicked off designing without any particular inspiration in mind but, as time went on, started associating it in my head with an old-timey, swingy jazz aesthetic. So hopefully it captures the spirit of the Jeeves and Wooster throwback theme song and opening credits, the music of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt (who the name is a nod to), and countless album covers from that era.

Vintage sheet music was initially a partial inspiration for what started out as a simple retro typeface, but the basic hand-lettered design from the Art Deco era lent itself to some further experimentation. Geometric shapes were added to the original monoline letters and numerals and the end result was a marvelous display face called Cafe Society JNL. During the 1930s, "Cafe Society" was popular slang for the financially privileged during the Great Depression who dined at fine cafes while others who were able to eat out did so at diners and cafeterias. Available along with Cafe Society JNL is the original version, Cafe Society Monoline JNL.

Barbieri is a casual sans type family, based on a German lettering style from the 1960s. The original hand-drawn alphabet was used in a rather peculiar edition of Der Barbier von Bagdad, an opera composed by Peter Cornelius. Our efforts to identify the cover designer have been, so far, unsuccessful. As fans of informal typography and popular lettering styles, we thought these few thin letters deserved a re-incarnation as a complete type family. Andrés Torresi and Marta Sánchez Marco were in charge of the production work. Now Barbieri has 6 weights suitable for packaging, posters, and music covers. It resembles a certain 'Americana' spirit, though with a Germanic twist.
