Gordita is a minimal sans serif typeface with a geometric foundation that has been built upon with modern details that result in an optically balanced, friendly typeface. When designing Gordita referring to features in Futura were influential as were the structural and harmonious strokes of Gotham. Forms have been optically compensated to appear natural and purely geometric. Joints are slightly tapered and ink traps feature in heavier weights with the purpose of achieving maximum legibility. Gordita has been tested in print and on screen in a wide range of point/pixel sizes. The family is equipped with OpenType features including alternate glyphs, fractions, case sensitive forms, small figures, arrows and symbols as well as old style and tabular figures. Now delivered in 7 weights with matching italics that slant at 15°. The italics are slightly lighter and narrower than the upright versions. A narrow, modern Slab Serif. JOSEFOV is directly derived from the sans serif text font ”Hedwig“. Therefore, of course, it pairs best with “Hedwig”. The basic thought was to create a font with heavy rounded serifs in the style of ”Clarendon“ but which hardly reminds one of that particular font. The form principle of rounded serifs is applied whenever possible — for example at the points where the individual strokes of the characters join one another. JOSEFOV seems very technical, very constructed (and truly is). In order to soften up the rigid impression, the serifs are applied at some points contrary to the tradition handed down, as with the upper case A C G K M V W and the lower case a b d h i j k l s t. Historically there is no example of the laterally oriented serifs of capital and small s (S) and C G. On the other hand, the double-sided serifs on the stems of b d h k l appear at the beginning of modern times in the very first serif types from five hundred years ago. The double-sided serifs of A M V W were also customary in the first decades of printing. JOSEVOV is particularly suitable for topics such as nature, folklore, culture, music, nutrition.

‘Skiart Serif Mini’ is now available online. Originally inspired by the san serif font ‘Skia’ by Mathew Carter for Apple. ‘Skiart’ was designed to feel more like a serifed font, but without any serifs. It took a step between sans serif and serif fonts. Next on the path towards a serif font comes Skiart Serif Mini, with tiny serifs added. This is a true serif font, all be it on the small side. It remains fully readable and feels as clean and normal as any of the best body copy serifs, and yet still has the strong solid bones of all the other Skiart font familys. If compared to one of the more commonly used serifs like ‘Times New Roman’, the ‘Skiart Serif Mini’ lowercase is more open with a taller x-height, increasing its readability and friendliness. The serifs are smaller and less distracting. They are not pretending to be ligatures. Where ‘Times’ makes its p q b d forms out of a barely touching oval and stem, the ‘Serif Mini’ forms are much more firmly attached, appearing clearly as single letters. The standard setting for the g’s are round single storied, (the italic a’s are also), feeling warmer and more inviting in the ‘Serif Mini’ font. Much more friendly than the stuffy double storied versions in fonts such as ‘Times’ etc.

And the day in which I introduce my second typographic family has arrived. In order to do this, I borrowed several passages from this beautiful book by Maurice Maeterlinck, “Life and Flowers”. His poetic observation of Nature made me reflect about the small discoveries behind the flow of my pen on paper. About that quick, spontaneous, overwhelmed stroke, with some awkwardness as well as certainty in it. About the writing that looms line after line. About the mischievous stains of ink flooding my writing tool. Lady Dodó was born as a product of these drawings, pieces of writing and reflections. Following the steps of its ancestor and friend, Lady René, it takes advantage of the goodness of the Open Type technology to propose a systematized as well as a personalized writing font. Both friendly and challenging. Due to the large number of alternate characters (both for lower and upper case as well as for numbers) and to its precise programming, it proposes to design diverse and rich typographical sets with multiple strokes in a simple way. However, Lady Dodó is not just made of typographical signs; it also proposes a set of modules to make patterns and another one to design frames. Stamen is the answer to a big question: What would happen if one tried to create a typeface that was ‘out of time’? If a type designer was to turn off the internet and put away the type specimens and just try to explore limbic, phantom history, what might that look like? No slavish explorations of the past. No gropings toward the future. No exhaustive core sample of the contemporary. Instead, using what one remembers of history and our collective vision of the future (usually a future imagined from the past) and channeling that into something that is, hopefully, new… The Bentons meet Frutiger for a Manhattan on a space station while Matthew Carter sways to the sweet sounds of the chorale that occasionally played through the halls of Stephenson Blake. This smear of implicit history expressed without explicit reference—this is Stamen: a family of 12 typefaces with a ton of alternate characters. The bold weight was designed for the LP “I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler” ( http://ittfwbc.com/ ) by the band YACHT in response to their request for a typeface that was ‘lost in time’, and refers to neither strict historical models nor purely futuristic forms. I built a small family out from there. It works well in text, but just as well for display setting. I think you’ll enjoy using it.

Agatized Formal is a chunky stencil typeface with slightly condensed letterforms and tight spacing. Designed primarily for display use, it’s ideal for posters, logos, advertising, book cover designs or small chunks of text such as pull-out quotes. It exudes authority without taking itself seriously, like a plump jolly uncle in charge of a brass band. Agatized Formal is a big, bold typeface with a charismatic presence that commands attention – in a friendly way, of course. But what really makes this typeface come alive is its arsenal of alternative characters and ligatures. There is a saying: Use sparingly. Whoa! Not here, no, no, no. Agatized, according to Wiktionary, means: A living thing converted into the form of agate; fossilized. I felt the name suited the solid, almost rock-like letterforms, but most of all I just wanted a typeface name that began with the letter A. Although Agatized Formal is a single-weight typeface it has a sibling, Agatized Informal, an older, more casual brother, rougher round the edges with craggy good looks and an altogether more jaunty style.

STF Eclectic Two contains more of the useful and the sublime. Alarm clock time icons and many characters which connect add extra usefulness to this dingbat font. Stuff you'll need someday for a graphic element, bullet or dingbat application. Perfect for website icons! The Eclectic family is legendary, with a cult-like following among the inititated. With over 100 characters in the complete set, you'll find yourself using Eclectic Two almost daily to add spice to your otherwise san-serif typographic existence. This font is essentially a soap opera of typographic image elements, created for projects when I couldn't find the "thingbat" I needed. Almost more of a collection of illustrations, there are many characters which connect to form patterns, and of course it's like a "small neutral European country" army knife for the creative community. EcTwo features an complete architecturally-inspired alphabet, more of those smiley face variations, the eight ball, alarm clocks for the hours, the bouncing ball (with connecting dotted lines!), the paper airplane (flying and crashed!), the work dog, the chainsaw, Dorothy's slippers, the sideways arrows again, a handicapped symbol, chicken feet tracks, male/female symbols, gears, polynesian-inspired ornaments for patterns, a lighthouse, a torch, and more. Handwriting of a strong Carelian personality revived: It’s autumn time once again, harvesting season, mushroom & berry time – the favourite season of my Karelian aunt Katri. A postcard she sent me more than twenty years ago had inspired me to SyysScript, “Script of Autumn” in Finnish. Katri had a very kind but also energetic personality, and I always thought her handwriting was a mirror of it. By making SyysScript I felt I could revive some of her unforgettable character. My Finnish autumn font has by now become a favourite for many and is branding fine food in both the Eastern and the Western hemisphere – even far beyond the arctic circle. “SyysScript“ is actually a growing family. For enhanced functionality in small sizes I added “SyysScript Eco” a year ago, a style with shortened extensions and simplified letterforms especially suited for packaging. And this autumn, a special one for Finland which is celebrating its 99th birthday, SyysScript grew again: Two long awaited newcomers, “SyysScript FeltTip” and “SyysScript FeltTip Eco” joined the family. They are bolder and softer than the previous styles but keep their positive, lighthearted feel. Astrum Heart is a very decorative script font using elegant caligraphic handwritten letters, that are all mutually interconnected, creating a unique look & feel of a personalized human handwritting. Whitespace between capital letters, lower-case letters, numbers and other characters are done in a way to minimize the need for kerning. Words consisting of lower-case letters have the possibility of being decorated by adding a small heart at the beginning, anywhere between the letters, or at the end of the word. Based on mid-century sans serif typefaces, Swiss 721 is a versatile family of weights and proportions ideally suited to a wide variety of print and interactive design projects and is equally at home as headlines on billboards as it is navigation content on small screens. Swiss 721 takes the essence of mid 20th century sans serif typefaces and melds it with modern design consistency and a systematic weight range.

Tomi Haaparanta got the idea for the Tyke typeface family after using Cooper Black for a design project. He liked Cooper's chubby design, but longed for a wider range of weights. “I wanted a typeface that was cuddly and friendly,” recalls Haaparanta, “but also one that was readable at text sizes.” He started tinkering with the idea, and Tyke began to emerge. Even though Haaparanta knew his boldest weight would equal the heft of Cooper Black, he began drawing the Tyke family with the medium. His goal was to refine the characteristics of the design at this moderate weight, and then build on it to create the light and bold extremes. Haaparanta got the spark to design type in 1990, when he attended a workshop held by Phil Baines at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. “I've been working and playing with type ever since,” Haaparanta recalls. He released his first commercial font in 1996, while working as an Art Director in Helsinki. After about two dozen more releases, he founded his own type studio, Suomi Type Foundry, early in 2004. At five weights plus corresponding italics, Tyke easily fulfills Haaparanta's goal of creating a wide range of distinctive, completely usable designs. The light through bold weights perform well at both large and small sizes, while the Black is an outstanding alternative to Cooper for display copy.

NOMAD —Regular is a stand alone font. Nomad -Regular is a clean, interesting revival font. It is a Display font. Nomad, now exclusively in OpenType .oft by Joseph V Coniglio of Coniglio Type. It is a narrow boldfaced font. Its analog source was comprised of an extremely limited die cut, truly generic, craft, peel-and-stick vinyl set of capital letters of ascenders and numbers. It was purchased at a five & dime stores, hardware department from the 1970's. My father owned an original set of characters: Nomad-Regular is nicely expanded to meet the needs of OpenType. The original adhesive labels adhered to the bows of that small boats so fisherman wouldn't get turned away at the Canadian border for not having their vessels tagged and listed with the appropriate license name and numbers, recorded by customs. It was a required serialization of letters and numbers marked on the side of their vessels. On the other hand, most beer and whisky drinking fishers, card players and bait casters would rather not deal with it, but the boat could not cross over the border without them. (Once part of Market LTD from the 1990's, a collection of limited faces, mostly alpha-numeric and some just plain numeric, used primarily in retail and display situations and titling.)
