The designers of wood type in the 1880s did not lack for inspiration or imagination. From extremely ornate designs to ultra compressed or condensed alphabets, there was no shortage of variety. Saddle Tramp JNL is one such compressed font. Its wide, bold design coupled with its squat appearance allows for multiple words in a headline without overuse of page space.

This font is based on a lot of the downtempo culture in Paris. Smoky bars, jazz clubs, that sort of thing. How a font can be influenced by intangibles is a question that I can't quite answer, but I can say that when I created it, it strongly reminded me of a couple of times spent in Paris back in the mid-90s.

Raqmi Monoshape is a simplified version of the Raqmi font family with unified (non-varying) shapes. This font family supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It includes two weights: regular and light, each of which has normal and left-slanted Italic versions. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil style utilizing varying x-heights. The Mutamathil type style utilizes only one glyph per Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards. Raqmi Monoshape includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. I fell in love at the age of twelve in Wales, recalls Bernard Philpot. "My father brought me to a small graveyard in the Welsh hills to show me two headstones carved by the great Eric Gill. I instantly fell in love with the beauty of the carving and the perfection of the letterforms. I still go back to marvel at these works of art." However, the ITC Bolthole™ design, Philpot's first commercial typographic endeavor, is quite unlike the works of Eric Gill that first captured his heart. Bolthole is a craggy sans serif with a definite grumpy attitude. It's not terribly legible, and, if more than a few words are set in the design, it's not very readable. To round out its cranky personality, Bolthole does not like to be set in small sizes. Like Cheez Whiz® and bullfights, you either love or hate this typeface. But whichever emotion dominates, there is no denying that Bolthole has a personality to be reckoned with - one with ample magnetism to ensure reader attraction. If used to set brief blocks of display copy, the typeface makes a powerful statement. Bolthole was originally designed to complement a whimsical ad for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As Philpot recalls, "although the ad didn't win any awards, the type attracted some very positive comments for its original look and feel." Philpot studied graphic design and typography at the London School of Printing, and soon after graduation found himself working in a large advertising agency in London. According to Philpot, "After designing type for everything from packaging to ads, I thought it time to convert one of my designs into a complete font - and Bolthole was born." Balboa is a display design combining elements of early sans serif and grotesque types with contemporary types. It evolved from ATF Headline Gothic, Banner (a headline typeface I drew for the San Francisco Chronicle), and Newsweek No.9, a Stephenson Blake-like grotesque I designed for Roger Black's 1980 redesign of Newsweek Magazine. There are nine styles, including the three new styles that have been added in 2014: Medium, Light and Ultra Light.

In spite of its angular appearance, Origami is composed almost exclusively of curves. Designer Carl Crossgrove derived the typeface from experiments in designing a low resolution type. The resulting face is reminiscent of Eastern European expressionist designers such as Oldrich Menhart and Vojtech Preissig. It is paired with an equally angular chancery italic. Origami works effectively for short blocks of text or at display sizes, while the capitals are especially suitable for titles.

Morro is based on simple geometric shapes – circles, triangles and rectangles. Imagine cutting circles, triangels and rectangles from paper and arranging them into letters where the outer edges form a filled figure. Arranging figures like this to form letters is nothing unique. You can find several beautiful examples of alphabets that inspired the creation of Morro. Everywhere from a 1936 booklet by Draughtsman called ”Modern lettering for all branches of commercial arts” to obvious examples is from the paragon of the design industry - Milton Glaser - with his typeface Baby Teeth. What sets Morro apart from other digitized versions of Glasers' ”Baby teeth”, or other similar designed fonts, is that Morro is expanded into lower case and also supports Basic latin, Western European, Central European, south Eastern European and Pinyin. There are also stylistic alternatives to some of the glyphs. Morro Regular works like a stencil and is accompanied by a block shadow style and an outline. The Morro family of fonts are layered and can be superimposed on each other to create several types of text effects.

The script version of the typeface Viabella introduces us to the calligraphic side of the Berlin type designer and typographer Karl-Heinz Lange. The sketches for this script typeface, which resulted from the close cooperation with Veronika Elsner and Günther Flake, found their roots in sketch drawings which Karl-Heinz Lange had already drawn in the 1980’s. For the Viabella design, Karl-Heinz Lange drew the basic letterforms of the Black and Regular cuts with a brush. He then re-worked the drawings and transferred them on to tracing paper. The design studio Elsner+Flake in Hamburg cut these typeface extensions and later digitized them manually with the help of the IKARUS Sustem. With the Regular cut as a basis, Elsner+Flake extended the family with the Light version and interpolated and re-worked the Medium weight. The completion of the family was taken over by the type designer Björn Gogalla who had done the same kind of work on Rotola, a design which Karl-Heinz Lange had also created for Elsner+Flake. While Viabella was originally conceived as a headline typeface, its lighter weights can certainly be used for shorter text applications. The Black version creates powerful headlines with highly effective accents. With the help of swashes, which are available for all weights, the user can lighten up longer texts and add special character to titles. In contrast to pure headline fonts, Viabella has been enriched by an extensive complement of special characters. In addition to the Europa-Plus character set which allows setting type in over 70 latin-based languages, the user will find multiple versions of numerals as well as oldstyle figures, tabular and proportional lining figures, diagonal fractions, and a complete set of superior and inferior figures and fractions (60%).
