Galano Grotesque is a geometric sans in the tradition of Futura, Avant Garde, Avenir and the like. It has a modern streak which is the result of a harmonization of width and height especially in the lowercase letters to support legibility. Galano Grotesque aims to be a universal weapon not only because it works great in headlines, short and long copies but also because of its subtle neutrality. It comes in 10 different weights with matching italics and is equipped with a set of powerful opentype features including alternative glyphs, fraction, arrows, ligatures and many more. An extended character set, supporting Central, Western and Eastern European languages, rounds up the family. During the design process of the alternative glyph shapes of Galano Grotesque, the interest of creating a standalone version emerged rapidly. This was the birth of Galano Grotesque Alt. Not only because of the legible and unique character created by the alternatives, but also because this could be the small copy embracing stylistic companion to Galano Grotesque. In addition to the alternative glyphs, the height of descender and ascender was increased, supporting structure and rhythm. When finishing Galano Grotesque Alt, it turned out to not only work great in small and long copies but also to be a great performer in headlines and short copies. FF Casus was drawn for print – but is also as natural for textual content in interactive design. It brings warmth and a subtle, handcrafted quality to pages in books and periodicals as well as banners and informational copy on large and small screens. It pairs flawlessly with a wide range of sans serif typefaces to create inviting and easy to read text copy. Drawn by Eugene Yukechev, FF Casus is a fresh take on the robust serif typefaces produced early in the 18th century. Born in Novosibirsk, Russia, in 1980, Yukechev earned degrees in philology in addition to editorial and graphic design. He also graduated from the British Higher School of Design in Moscow, studying type and typographic design. Yukechev now runs the Moscow-based studio “Schrift Publishers” and the online “Type Journal” with his colleagues. The six weights of FF Casus – each with an italic complement – are available as OpenType® Pro fonts with an extended character set supporting most Central European and many Eastern European languages. Designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli with Maria Chiara Fantini, Lovelace is Zetafonts homage to the tradition of nineteenth century “Old Style” typography - a revival of Renaissance hand-lettered shapes driven by the desire to create a less formal and more friendly alternative to Bodonian serifs. While taking inspiration from the letter shapes created by Pheimester or Alexander Kay - with their calligraphic curves and heavy angled serifs that influenced Benguiat and Goudy’s typefaces in the 70s - we also tried to add elegance and contrast by following another 19th century revival style: the Elzevir. This digital homage to victorian typography, aptly named after the algorist daughter of lord Byron, is developed in two optical sizes, both in a six weights range from extralight to extrabold. The text variant offers maximum readability thanks to the generous x-height and screen-friendly design, while the display variant excels in the sharp contrast and thin details needed for editorial and large-size titling use. The italics, strongly influenced by calligraphy, have been complemented with a display script family, including luscious swashes and connected lowercase letters, lovingly designed by Zetafont in-house calligrapher. All the thirty weights of Lovelace cover over 200 languages that use latin, cyrillic and greek alphabets, and include advanced Open Type features as Stylistic Alternates, Standard and Discretionary Ligatures, Positional Numerals, Small Caps and Case Sensitive Forms.

a, g, k and y It was a forensic examination by Jason Smith of his existing designs that laid the groundwork for FS Jack. Jason made a list of unique characteristics that would give the sans serif font its typographic thumbprint, which included an unusually large x-height and slightly off-the-wall letters like the lower-case “a”, “g”, “k” and “y”. “I wanted to make something that was slightly uncomfortable,” says Jason, “and in doing so simplify the quirkiness down to a few letters.” Fernando Mello did “the rest of the cooking”, filling the design out and making the additional weights. Tipos Latinos Upon its release in 2010, FS Jack was submitted by Fernando, who is Brazilian, for the esteemed type design biennial, Tipos Latinos, where it was selected as a winner in the Families category. It went on to be selected for type exhibitions throughout Latin America and around the world. “FS Jack is a workhorse,” says Fernando, “but also very ownable and distinctive, and available in a good range of weights, crafted by Jason and I.” Corporate “FS Jack took a couple of years to get noticed and is still fairly underused,” says Jason, “which is good in a way, for our Brandfont clients that have adopted it.” FS Jack was chosen as the signature font for The Shard in London, from its signage down to business cards. Fontsmith also worked with Lloyds Bank to customise FS Jack into a bespoke font for the bank’s updated brand identity – part of Fontsmith’s Brandfont service, which you can read about here. Fat Jack Included in the FS Jack family – just – is FS Jack Poster, the super-heavy weight of the range. “That was a last minute addition,” says Fernando, “after Jason and I started talking about how much we liked Gill KO, a typeface that is almost comically fat.”

Created as a logo typeface in 2004 by Francesco Canovaro, Duepuntozero is one of Zetafonts classic typefaces. A monolinear sans serif typeface with rounded corners and condensed proportions, strictly based on modular geometric design, it was at first designed in five weights to be used as a condensed companion typeface to the rounded display family Arista. In 2019 the family was completely redesigned by the Zetafonts Team, expanding the original character set to include cyrillic and greek glyphs and adding four extra weights and italics to the original weight range. This restored and revamped version, named Duepuntozero Pro, also includes full Open Type features for positional figures, fractions and Small Caps. With his rounded, minimal aesthetic, Duepuntozero embodies the desire for simplicity and playfulness of contemporary mobile applications, making it a perfect choice for gaming and app interface design. Its compact design allow for maximum space saving on mobile screens when used as a text typeface, while the strictly geometric design and the extreme range of weights (including thin and black) make it excel in display, logo and editorial use. A complementary set of free icons in the same range of weights of the font is provided to help designers build consistent branding through pictograms in infographics, interfaces and editorial products.

The sheet music for "Good Night Angel" from the 1937 motion picture "Radio City Revels", had the movie's title hand lettered in a free form Art Deco sans serif design. This has been recreated digitally as Reveler JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Generic Typeface Collection is a series of sans-serif typefaces inspired by the craftsmanship of graphic design, typesetting, and printing in the analogue era – before Adobe, Macintosh computers and desktop publishing – when dinosaurs ruled the earth. With the use of various typesetting apparatuses or dry transfer type, photo copiers, and shooting layouts and paste-ups to film, the printed results was not as exact, precise and predictable as it is today. When examining old prints, it is difficult not to like the way that characters in over- or underexposed film have a special type of vibe to them that is often sadly lost in today’s pursuit of total perfection. Encouraged by this, I saw a need for a collection of typefaces that are non-clinical and non-conformist, and some that are coarse, rough and distorted – errors that might come from poor exposure when put on film, enlargements from small point texts, or maybe quality loss from successive generations of photocopies. Or all of the above. This is an attempt to incorporate spirit and personality into a set of typefaces without losing distinction. You might call it a homage to non-perfection. I call it human. The Generic Typeface Collection consists of 11 fonts divided into four series. The three standard series – the Formal Release series, the Coarse Copy series, and the Rough Display series – all contain three fonts each. The Extra Splendor series contains a couple of shadow fonts for that little extra sparkle.
