Essay Text Regular looks back to the spirit of the french Renaissance, when the roman typographic letterforms came to full emancipation. Departing from that historical reference, Essay Text gets rid of all sentimental antiquity and becomes a contemporary interpretation of the “archetypes” of that period. Essay Text Italic refers to that more vaguely, resulting in a formalised look with fairly upright and open shapes and little cursiveness. As in the Renaissance, before the mating of roman and italic, Essay Text Italic works as a separate text face and a perfect secondary type. The name Essay derives from the literary meaning of the word, attempt or trial. The Ampersand Forest has its first book family! Budinger Oldstyle is elegant and approachable at the same time, with five different weights, making it a perfect choice for text or display in situations that require a hint of scholarship, fine arts, craft, erudition, and clarity. Budinger Oldstyle has the legibility of a Garalde (like those of Garamond, Manutius, et al.), with a whiff of Venetian revival (after the fashion of Schneidler & Goudy). The letters are arbitrary, with conventions like cupped serifs and leftward stress. It also has a higher x-height than might be expected, to give it an upright posture and openness in the counters. The italic is more compact, with more clearly calligraphic letterforms and conventions like Swash Caps. Designed by Sol Hess in 1940 as a variation of Stymie Extrabold but with squared corners where round shapes would normally be. This striking display face is found in only some Lanston Monotype catalogs and specimens are somewhat hard to find.

This face was designed in 1925 as the Monotype answer to the very popular Cooper Black. Goudy is also quite similar in appearance to Ludlow Black and Pabst Extra Bold, both of which were also done in response to Cooper Black.

Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF in 1927, Sol Hess added a lower case in 1929. Hess also drew Broadway Engraved in 1928 for Lanston Monotype. Broadway has become somewhat of a classic icon as an "Art Deco" typeface.

Spectrum font is based on a design by Jan van Krimpen, who worked on his font from 1941 to 1943 for use in a Bible of the Spectrum publishing house in Utrecht. The bible project was later cancelled but the font was so beautifully formed and universal that the Monotype Corporation in London completed it. The 7 is particularly unusual with its slanted horizontal stroke and marked bend to the left in the lower third of the form.
