Based on the type style used for the Superior Sign and Chart Printer No. 929, this simple and clean sans serif font was perfectly suited for use by teachers in the classroom and for businesses and organizations that needed to make signs, price cards, charts and notices. Whenever I've stayed in Munich my friend Michael Bundscherer and I go on a typographical expedition. When we talk about that, we remember the bygone world of sign painter. On one of the facades of a furniture shop in Munich, you can discover the lettering of the name in golden letters. This one convinced us because of the simple elegance Art Deco. These letters on the facade are in any case the character set, which forms the basis of this document. The missing (especially the lowercase letters and the numbers) were modeled. The "OPEN" called version tries to replicate the 3-D effect. The font is particularly suitable for shorter texts and headlines.

Margon is a serif font family with a temperate design -- small serifs, moderate contrast, tiny roundings on the corners make it calm and serene. The Margon font family consists of 18 members divided into 4 groups of different proportions marked by indexes 360, 380, 400, 430. These values correspond to densities of sets -- 360 is the widest style, 430 is the most narrow one. The peculiarity of Margon family is a rather small difference in proportions of characters between neighbor groups, it’s less than 10%. Lettering found on the cover of the 1923 song "I Love Me (I'm Wild About Myself)" can take on various graphical possibilities. Although its design is Art Nouveau in concept, it is somewhat reminiscent of the "bubble letters" most school kids used to doodle on notebook and portfolio covers; yet the lettering style also evokes the 1960s-70s Hippie movement. As a sidebar, a couple of lines from the song's lyrics were used by Jeff Levine's late mother to chastise him as a youth when he got "a little too full of himself". The lyrics were: "I love me! Sardines is a project by Jacques Le Bailly aka Baron von Fonthausen. It first saw the light as a student project for a monospaced font and eventually grew into Vette Letters’ largest font family. We saw its potential and expect it to be a million seller, just like our other typefaces. VLNL Sardines comes in 42 different variations, like rough and clean cuts, regular and condensed widths (condensed is the exactly half of the regular width). Sardines is an eclectic mash of classic curves and mathematical measurements, leaving a very distinct typographic flavor. While most of our type is market-fresh, this one comes out of the can, but it’s delicious nonetheless. And it’s great for adventurous BBQ-ing!

Nutcase is a perfect example of a font that principally designed itself. I created a hexagonal template (the most economical form in nature by the way) and took out the center to increase the decorative element. I played around with it, creating some pleasing characters at first but it soon became clear it would translate into a complete alphabet, so I set to work applying the idea to both upper and lower cases. It wasn't all straight forward though, avoiding awkward characters and retaining legibility took a little perseverance but it eventually paid off. I thought of this primarily as a decorative display face but having tested it out, found it reads surprisingly well as body copy too.

Camden is based on the types used in Camden's 'Remaines concerning Britaine' published in London in 1638. The object was to avoid the contradiction inherent in most 'distressed' typefaces made to give the effect of the imperfections in old print. This means that apparently worn characters are perfectly repeated throughout a setting. The makeup of the Camden fonts means that, with a little extra keying time, alternate characters may be brought in which overcome this. Also many characters are provided which have 'period identities' such as the long s with ligatures, tied sorts ct, sp and st, swash characters in the italic and the double vv, all of which can add a specific age identity.

Arial was designed for Monotype in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders. I admit: I had a bit of a crazy week when I thought up an drew this font. I broke my arm during kickboxing training on monday, leaving me in a cast - unable to do most everyday things, like getting a good night's sleep (try sleeping with a humongous cast on your arm). Thank goodness, it is my left arm, so I can still draw letters and use my laptop. So… this font has been made entirely using one arm! It is a bit of a horror font - it sort of sums up my mood right now. Glyphs have very little spacing, adding to the evil look of Plague Master. Comes with a lethal amount of diacritics.

In Vasetters the letters are cut from the shape of a tessellating vase. To get the tessellating effect, the two sets of letters (and numbers and some symbols) must alternate, and this is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature of Contextual Alternatives (calt). Vasetters is monospaced and comes in two weights. The regular weight is tightly spaced, which should not be a problem at large point sizes. At small point sizes adjacent letters can be colored differently or the character spacing can be increased. The lighter weight can be used alone or layered above the regular weight to create the effect of hollow lettering. Vasetters is is fun, bizarre, weird, and obviously a decorative display font.

Tangential is a distinctive modern sans in 3 weights which was born out of a simple idea: Beginning the project with a perfect circle to form the letter ‘o’, then squaring off one corner, ending up with a letterform I hadn't seen before for that character; this for me was enough motivation to attempt a full alphabet incorporating the angled styling wherever possible. The Tangential style I envisaged for the family is complemented by the prominent use of negative space throughout, most apparent on the drop shaped ‘o’ which is a key feature of the typeface and a letterform I'm particularly pleased with. The core Tangential design is also accompanied by two further variations, Rounded & SemiSerif.
