Pondicherry is a nice city in the South-East of India. It has changed colonial hands over time, but after the last colonial power (the French) left in 1954, it reunited with India. I have always liked the name Pondicherry. It evokes something happy and exotic and I guess I had the same feeling when I developed this font. Pondicherry font is an outlined affair with an uneven baseline and an overall 'happy' feel. It is an all caps font, but upper and lower case differ and you can use them together. Pondicherry comes with a treasure chest full of diacritics.

Arigola is a beautiful slab serif defined by its Art Nouveau spirit that gives it a particular charm; one that is eye pleasing and helps distinguish products against its competitors. Swan Song is a digitization of gorgeous free form calligraphy by British artist Rachel Yallop. It first appeared in The Calligraphy Source Book edited by Miriam Stribley (Running Press, 1986). Rooted in day to day handwriting, Swan Song is a quick and irregular artistic jolt at first impression, and surprisingly richly-textured art at second glance. Whatever these letters are used to communicate, the communicator is content, confident, humorous, strong and experienced, and the reader will be glad to receive the personal contact of such a communicator. Linotype Mhai Thaipe is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The work of German designer Markus Remscheid, the name is not hard to recognize as an English-Asian play on my type and describes its general character. The small circles which ornament the alphabet and the unusual flowing forms which look like a mixture of Arabic and Sanskrit combine to give the typeface an ornamental, exotic look. Linotype Mhai Thaipe is best used for headlines with point sizes of 12 or larger.

Sumply is a multi-layered type family based on geometric forms. A monospace display typeface which comes as a family of four. It is equipped with OpenType features and contextual alternatives to create a versatile and fresh output. Sumply initially was designed to be used in personalization processes in digital printing. By choosing the basic geometric cut (FOUR), patterns and various graphic elements can be created just by importing text variables into the indesign data merge. If combined with the other cuts the possibilities are sheer endless. Sumply was selected to be in the 2016 edition of Typodarium.

Charlemagne, one of the great rulers of the Middle Ages, was instrumental in the reestablishment of formal education in the West. This font was inspired by the notion that he felt the need to protect his communications from people with the ability to read; a rare skill then. Did he really command such a script to exist? He did instigate the development Carolingian minuscule script. Here are two different systems that are both attributed to him. Does it provide any real security? No, but it is fun to think about how such a system might have been used.

Tuscaloosa is a hybrid script that includes Tuscan (bifurcated) serif treatments. The design of Tuscaloosa began as a set of organically-formed initials, the Tuscan serifs being reminiscent of shoots and leaves bursting forth. Tuscaloosa also derives inspiration from the late Victorian era, when the development of newspaper and poster advertising led to extremes of weight in the main strokes. The font is intended to convey an aura of excitement and fun that characterized those times! The name 'Tuscaloosa' was chosen because of the appropriate combination of 'Tuscan' and 'looseness,' and because of its essentially American character.

I have upgraded my existing font software and also bought new font software to play around with. It takes some time getting used to working with it; the upgraded software feels similar to what I am used to, but handles things differently and the new software is intuitive, but comes with its own language and ways of doing things. I spend most days reading the handbooks and watching online tutorials, but I did manage to create a font. Steamed is a hand drawn all caps display font that comes with a whole bunch of accented glyphs (even Vietnamese) to play around with.

Tautier is a display font based on the specimen of Enge Mediaeval-Antigua, published in 1900 from the Bauer Type Foundry. It is intentionally redrawn to keep its overall narrow proportions. Based on the existing basic alphabets, Tautier is redrawn to appear more classical and friendly, as you can notice in the rounded corners around the beaks, as well as the lachrymal terminals in lowercases. Tautier is a display typeface suitable for large applications, for example, headlines for editorial design, branding, webpages, and environmental design. It currently comes as a single-styled typeface disposed to extend with an italic version.

The source of inspiration for Haute Monde Monogram is the 1934 "Book of American Types" by American Type Founders. Found in that specimen book was a wonderfully elegant traditional smallcap-Capital-smallcap monogram alphabet known as “Elite Monogram Initials”. This elegant typeface is now digitally remastered and updated for modern use with functionality beyond its original intentions. Since I have my new logotype people are asking me about the typeface it is based on. But it did not exist and I did not believe that it would actually work. I still love my logotype and so I went on to try to make it work as a font. After many different versions and some doubts I am glad to present Jocham. It is the first typeface with my name. For an obvious reason. There is only one weight with an italic. I tried different weight, but they were all not as strong as the final.

A 1964 piece of sheet music entitled “Old Soldiers Never Die (They Just Fade Away)” was based on the farewell speech General Douglas MacArthur gave to Congress on April 19, 1951. This particular edition of the song sheet had part of his speech (as well as its title) hand lettered in a free-form sans serif reminiscent of the lettering done by such noted lettering artists as Paul Coker and Saul Bass. The casual and playful style of this type design became the inspiration for Swing Vote JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Merel is a modern geometric typeface with humanist attributes. Geometry and logic are at the heart of this 6 weight font family. Humanist touches give it a number of distinctive characteristics, as well as aid legibility. Despite being rational and function driven in its nature, Merel has a soft and gentle touch. It was designed to tackle both print and onscreen challenges of the modern environment. Details include reduced x-height, mild stroke contrast and vertically sheared terminals with cushioned finish across the typeface. Merel features a number of alternative characters, manually edited kerning and Opentype features.

Symbolum Croatian heritage awakened. Symbolum is the first ever contemporary interpretation of Glagolitic script. This rediscovered Croatian gemstone gleams again with its unique and glorious letter shapes that give this typeface an exceptional value and meaning. The letters of this contemporary slab serif are inspired with Glagolitic script, but it is not the revival. Some letters originally don’t exist, but are invented, so the font can cover the central European character set. It is suitable for branding, game design, art and conceptual projects, but also for longer texts and more complex designs. The italics are designed at an 10° angle.

Jenson Oldstyle was designed by J. W. Phinney of the Dickinson Type Foundry in 1893. Jenson is based on the 'Golden Type' designed by William Morris in 1890 for his private press editions under the imprint of the Kelmscott Press. The original digital Lanston version of this face included a companion Oblique. This remastered set instead features a true italic based on the 1893 ATF italic version as well as a newly digitized Jenson Heavyface based on Phinney's design of 1899. Jenson Italic Pro features alternate lowercase forms based on ATFs then contemporary Cushing Oldstyle Italic.

Acrom is a geometric sans serif typeface with a minimal stroke contrast. It was designed with a modern, contemporary context in mind. Acrom’s main characteristics lie in the injection of stylistic forms that enhance its individuality without overpowering the font’s functional purpose and integrity. Prospera was designed without reference to existing roman faces. In its initial form, development was partially supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (Design Project Grant), as a design for use on 'low-res' digital output devices. Early releases had simplified detail in cross-bars and serifs, and hand-tuned bitmaps. As an original design, Prospera draws on principles of letterform developed during my studies of lettercarving (in Wales with Ieuan Rees) and Roman proportion. The design is idiosyncratic, perhaps more akin to Gill's Perpetua than to the monotonous corporate flavors so prevalent today.

Ammurapi was the last king of Ugarit, which was destroyed circa 1200 B.C. Back then all writing was done by hand and all that has been preserved is on clay tablets many of which were fired in the very destruction of the cities that enabled these documents to withstand the rvages of time. Ugarit unlike the other cuneiform scripts has a very limited number of glyphs. It is somehow exotically attractive. This font has been encoded in the appropriate unicode block to permit ease of use for scholarly purposes, but would also make a fine use as a decorative element.

Naga is Hans van Maanen's original creation of art deco shapes interected with intricate mazes of what could be Celtic or Mesoamerican knotwork art. The totality of the typeface borders on the mysterious, exotic and yet clearly discernible as far as readability is concerned. Naga comes with a companion outline style that emphasizes its intricacy. Both fonts hold up quite strongly when combined with photo/illustration masks. The Naga family comes in both OTF and TTF formats, and includes an extended range of characters covering most Latin-based languages. A few unicase forms are also included.

Designer Nick Curtis found the inspiration for this typeface on a 1920s poster for a German bookseller, by Berlin poster artist Paul Scheurich. ITC Jeepers retains the spontaneity and playfulness of Scheurich's original lettering and adds a few surprises of its own, one being the somewhat exclamatory ear on the lowercase "g". It was, in fact, the excited look of this particular character that gave rise to the font's name. Not to be outdone, the exclamation point takes on an even more startling demeanor. The monoweight, slab serif design has a friendly personality, perfect for headlines and other display uses.

Weiss Modern Gothic is the first digital re-creation with a lot of improvements of a late seventies well-known edited typeface by Bauer. At the time known as Weiss Initials Extra Bold or Weiß Modern Gothik, the design was inspired by the famous Weiß Initialen N°2 drawn by Emil Rudolf Weiß (1875-1942); also father of the non-less famous "Neuland" typeface. Strangely, this beauty seemed abandoned while sister-flared faces like Friz Quadrata, Flange, Serif Gothic or Romic are in a new wave of revival. Hoping this one will not again disappear... Happy new life.

I designed Mirage using ink and a calligraphy brush to evoke the writing styles of ancient and exotic civilizations. After completing the project, it was filed and forgotten. The engraver Jean Jannon ranks among the significant representatives of French typography of the first half of the 17th century. From 1610 he worked in the printing office of the Calvinist Academy in Sedan, where he was awarded the title "Imprimeur de son Excellence et de l'Academie Sédanoise". He began working on his own alphabet in 1615, so that he would not have to order type for his printing office from Paris, Holland and Germany, which at that time was rather difficult. The other reason was that not only the existing type faces, but also the respective punches were rapidly wearing out. Their restoration was extremely painstaking, not to mention the fact that the result would have been just a poor shadow of the original elegance. Thus a new type face came into existence, standing on a traditional basis, but with a life-giving sparkle from its creator. In 1621 Jannon published a Roman type face and italics, derived from the shapes of Garamond's type faces. As late as the start of the 20th century Jannon's type face was mistakenly called Garamond, because it looked like that type face at first sight. Jannon's Early Baroque Roman type face, however, differs from Garamond in contrast and in having grander forms. Jannon's italics rank among the most successful italics of all time – they are brilliantly cut and elegant.

Paneuropa 1931™ is a faithful recreation of XX-century Polish classic, made by Idzikowski foundry in Warsaw, 1931. Original Paneuropa was a renowned and highly popular typeface in XX-century Poland, and was widely used in all kinds of design, editorial use and printed materials for decades. Paneuropa is a geometric, clean and versatile font family inspired by Paul Renner's famous Futura - it is a bit narrower, with different proportions and details in drawing, completely different figures and punctuation shapes than Futura. It is an interesting and refreshing alternative to Futura with its own distinct personality and a subtle authentic vintage flavour. Paneuropa 1931 contains separate styles for display and large sizes as well as styles for small text sizes - differing in spacing and the softness of letterforms.
