Here in the heart of Santa Monica, in the disused 1940s aircraft hangar we like to call the Comicraft Studios, we know that times are tough. As we were driving to “work” in the back of our chauffeur driven Humvee limo, sipping martinis out of the navels of Playboy bunnies and wondering what font we should release next, we decided it was time to reach out to the poor people. Yes, we felt it was time to create a font for the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, for the wretched refuse of our teeming shores. A font, if you will, for the tempest-tossed. It’s a little skinny and might be described as pinched and starved, but it’s guaranteed to see you through this current economic crisis as only the 26 letters of the alphabet can. It was a tall order, but Jazzy JG Roshell created this one while he was in line at the bank, waiting for his personal bailout. Built in 1928 in Wichita, Kansas, the Uptown Theater started out as a movie house, but today still exists as a dinner theater. Online images of this vintage venue’s perpendicular wall sign show the theater’s name in an Art Nouveau influenced angular style with rounded terminals – similar to that of pen drawn sign lettering of the era. Adapted as a digital type font, Silent Film JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I enjoy and am inspired by many blackletter designs, but find that their uppercase characters are generally too complex to be very usable. I also found that very few, if any were designed with perfect 45 degree angles. I set out to design a textura blackletter with unique features and a usable uppercase. What resulted is an interesting, yet usable, geometric design with unusual features that make it stand out from existing texturas.

Wedding Text was designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1901 for American Type Founders (ATF). The face was so popular that its forms soon began appearing with other font foundries under different names, Elite Kanzlei with D. Stempel AG, Comtesse with C.F. Rühl, Linotext with Linotype, etc. Its ornamental forms are not considered very legible by today's standards; therefore it should be used for headlines and short texts in point sizes 12 or larger.

Vestigio m. Ing. & Fr. vestige: a trace, mark or visible sign left by something as an ancient city in a condition or practice vanished or lost. Vestigia is born by lost pieces of other typography, being then, Garbancera's descendant. It evolved to be seen in big point sizes and compete with other fierce competitors, while retaining some features of it ancient predecessor, navigates a gothic fraktur experimental style, existing between legible and illegible reading.

Cosmata is geometric sans serif family of 10 fonts suitable for both display and reading use. Inspired by Futura, Cosmata developed its own complex, unique life. The Boston Type Foundry called the pattern for this elegant typeface "Moslem," suggesting the exotic appeal of faraway lands. Based on William H. Page’s Clarendon Extended wood type from the 1800s, Clarified JNL is digitally available in both regular and oblique versions. Comic books based on popular characters have been around pretty much since the advent of comic books themselves. An edition of the "Car 54 Where Are You?" series published by Dell (and based on the hit TV show created by Nat Hiken) displayed "Car 54" in a bold hand lettered stencil design on the cover. These few characters became the inspiration for Patrol Car Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This font was inspired by the Latin script used in European monasteries from circa the 5th to 8th centuries, before the Carolingian “Caroline” (look at our 825 Karolus). It was a regular script, rounded, written slowly, used mainly for specially meticulous books, with a few ligatures, legible, but only with lowercase. The capitals consisted of enlarged lower cases, but here, we have preferred to use two slightly different patterns. Our lower cases are a synthesis from a lot of variants (mainly from the “First Bible” of Charles The Bald), the upper cases were mainly inspired from a 700’s manuscript from the abbey of Fécamp (France). We have adapted the font for contemporary users, differentiating between U and V, I and J, which has no relevance for ancient Latin scribes, and naturally with Thorn, Oslash, Lslash, K, W... punctuation and the usual accented characters which did not exist at the time. It can be used with 799 Insular Title.
